Vert/Speed Training Thread

Still goin at it huh, Drew? AND still jumping on that damn crete, WOW. I’d be in a wheel chair by now. Good for you, you make me want to get back into it once again. Nice homemade Vertec. And just last night I was doing web searches for some Vertec’s. The damn things are so expensive but I actually found 2 of them for less than $200. But ended up making my own with some string in my new gym…it’s 18 feet high due to the air conditioning. So I’m pumped & ready to start training. And thanks to you.

Do you still have your site? Throw up the link for a reminder to everyone.

Also, where in the hell did you set up your camera to get this great angle? Pretty sweet I must say.

ya man still going at it, detrained for 6 months after i peaked my vert in 2009 summer hehe but now im back.

i don’t have access to gym courts so, plus growing up i played on the street a ton so i feel pretty comfortable on hard surfaces.

i really want to get consistent 35" verts off 1-step lead, really need to build alot more power in my legs though… i’m pretty much consistent 32, but i need consistent 35, then RVJ would be 40+… vertec really comes in handy for that stuff, it’s alot more fun to do SVJ & 1-2 step jumps on a vertec than on a rim.

thanks man, it’s ULTRA portable… and assembles so fast… im loving it  gonna take it to some really obscure spots and jump eventually.

cool man… drop some vids eventually!

ya, pure-dedication aka adarq … it’s going good at the moment, tons of journals and stuff… got some cool projects in the works, can’t wait to drop them…

peace man!

forgot to reply to this… ya man there’s a big hill (~8-9’ tall) along the side of the court, so i put my tripod up there with cam, thats another 6’ or so… pretty cool having angles that high up, i agree… it’s nice for a change.

Hey that is very cool. Can you run it, up & down? And why are you up so early on a Sun?

Also, what do you suggest for a camera? I can afford to spend $200 or less. Tks.

ya you can run up/down it… could possibly be good for some hill stuff, but it’s too short imo… there’s actually a big hill near me at some park, never been to it, but it goes up like 60 feet or so, which is very high for a hill in florida… that’s like a mountain in florida.

i goto sleep at 5-6am

about the cameras, no idea  i use a canon hv30 which is somewhat expensive, but i really have no clue about other cameras, i just did all my research on that one and went with it… what i suggest is, looking up cams, then searching on youtube, for example “canon hv30 test footage”, that’ll give you an idea of what the actual footage looks like from a wide variety of people… that’s how i settled on mine, it was one of the best 2 years ago for the price range and it’s still pretty relevant, but it’s in the 400-600$ range right now, i got it for $600 on amazon.

Sorry I didn’t see this thread before. It started off OK, but looks like it kind of got off track with people trying to compare their “vertical jumps.” First of all, a vertical jump needs to be from a standing position, no steps. The reach needs to be measured with one hand. At least Adarqui understood that and titled his youtube video appropriately. If you run up, it’s not a VJ. Just saying.

Rip can jump, now, but that’s not over 40". Sorry dude. You’re up there, but if you’re 5’6, you’re reach is probably about 7’. With a 40" jump, you’d be 6" over the rim and throwing it down. It’s pretty sweet, though, even though it’s not a VJ, it’s a running jump. I’m not hating, though, you’re getting up there and I can’t do better. I think SquatDr must also think it’s OK to run up, because there’s no way he’s going to do a true 46" VJ. I’ll assume he just doesn’t know the difference.

Koing seems to have the right idea on here. Strength & power are pretty general qualities. Jumping requires practice. If you want to jump high, you have to be jumping at least 2x/week and squatting 3x/week like wookie put up there is way too much no matter what you’re trying to do. I think he was also deadlifting 3x/week in additional to squatting. Too much, man, especially if you’re trying to do anything else. It’s just not necessary. Jumping & running certainly require strength, but not max strength like the westside guys talk about. You’ll never see a great powerlifter with a great VJ unless he’s stacking steroids, which is pretty much the norm anyway.

The research is pretty clear on this one - squatting helps, plyos help, squatting + plyos helps even more. When you cycle your strength work so you’re not focusing as much on max strength and focusing more on technique and stiffness, you’re going to have the best results. Somebody here posted something about Pavel talking about stiffness. The problem with those guys is that they talk about it, but never talk about HOW to increase stiffness. It’s difficult, takes a long time, and can be dangerous long-term if not done properly. The bottom line, though, is that jumping is way more about the nervous system than musculature. I’ve seen guys with terrible squats that can jump out of the gym. Look at just about every basketball player in the NBA. Do you think they squat heavy? Hell no. Way too dangerous when you’re making all that money.

his reach is 7’3 and easily gets 10’7 on his missed dunks…

squatdr claimed a 50" standing, 55" running, none of which will ever be seen.

DUNK TRAIN IRC > GYM TAN LAUNDRY

word a two hander off lob in here and some nice jumps.

Drew, looking great there with your jumps/dunking. Best yet for sure.
Also, it’s outstanding that you’ve stuck with it all these years. Gotta love that.
Your my hero, bud. Maybe soon I’ll come over & hang with you for the day. It’s only 1 hr. for me accross
Gator Alley.

It’s nothing. Let me get in some training. Haven’t been jumping AT ALL. This week I begin.
Doin the Strength Show program. LOL, j/k. Fooled you didn’t I? :stuck_out_tongue:

thanks man appreciate it…

lol… ya well, once i quit jumping and detrained, i realized i really missed the feeling of throwing down some hard dunks… i also missed training for that supreme goal of ~45" RVJ… i really want to hit that number one day, i’d be able to make some psychotic videos hah.

there really is no feeling like it. the only analogy i have of dunking/jumping high, is like when you connect clean with a perfect punch in boxing, everything just feels perfect, everything comes together beautifully in that one instant… then being able to witness your damage is fun, ie opponent getting rocked, or rim being smashed :stuck_out_tongue:

yes hehe!

thanks for the kind words mang! hope it doesn’t rain tonight, i’m the lightest i’ve been in 3 years and i feel great, except for a small left achilles ‘sensation’… i pin squatted (a little above half depth) for heavy singles 2 days in a row (wed/thurs), thurs hitting 315 @ 152, so my legs feel pretty ridiculous today… i need to get well above 400 on that pin squat though, oh and i pause for 5sec on those now, really trying to improve my explosive strength without significant pre-stretch… only thing in my way is this damn florida weather, really hoping it gives me one hour to decimate a rim.

peace!

I’m an idiot, I meant to type, Strength SHOES program…those platform shoes. Duh.

5 secs with pauses = pain. That’s some hell right there. haha

This Fl. weather is crazy as of late. Loads of rain here on the west coast. One of my jobs I cut grass early in the morns on a golf course. I’m getting stuck all the time, shit is SO funny.

nah, 5 sec pause on the pins lol  just killing the stretch reflex a bit.

haha ya man, it’s annoying as hell… been pouring every day nearly all day… tonight luckily it didn’t :d

peace

hope yall like this one, it goes hard… beastie boys dunk mix.

oh ya, special guest, and his max running vert is over 40" (his reach is 94", he’s 6’ in shoes)

Ahhhh, on the pins. I got ya.
Cool video. Who is that guy? He’s been in your vids before, right? And where has he been?
HA, you

that’s my friend eddie, ya he’s been in a bunch of videos… he was busy with school + work so he really didn’t do anything for a long time (6 months or so apparently), now he wants to get back & train hard… he has crazy ability, if he stays with it & trains hard, he could be dropping 50+" RVJ’s one day.

peace man
