Vastus Lateralis Tendinopathy

Hello. I have been told by a physical therapist that I have vastus lateralis tendinopathy. My symptoms are having a sharp pain during the squat in the upper side of my thighs (both). I feel the pain during the lowering, but it hurts more as soon as I go up. I train like a bodybuilder and powerlifter. The pain has slowly come about in about 10 months.

My leg routine is centered around squats. I use a medium stance. In the past 15 years of my lifting “career” I have squatted anywhere from the “bar” and up to 500 pounds on two occasions. I have also repped in the 400’s for some time. My goals include, but are not limited to lifting the above poundages again, but, obviously, this problem is preventing me from doing so. All other movements cause no discomfort. I am currently raw deadlifting 525 at a bodyweight of around 200. Has anybody had this issue? Whom have you seeked assistance from? Do you concur with the diagnosis? How have you resolved it. Respectfully.

One thing to question is if this is indeed vastus lateralalis tendonopathy versus trochanteric bursitis or a TFL strain, or IT band related pathology. Of course, without actually physically examining you I can only guess. Google ‘trochanteric bursitis’ and see if the pictures and description are close to what you are describing.

Do you have any other issues? i.e. numbness, sensation of pins/needles, problems with incontinence, muscle weakness not secondary to pain.
