I am training for Strongman with 5/3/1 and am not sure what variation of squat would be best to use. High bar, front squat, or low bar?
What events are in your next competition?
Dude you’re one of the GOATs! What could any of us possibly teach you?
Assuming you arent eddie hall for real, i know that the SSB gives a lot of Versatility. It kind of punishes bad form and you can turn it around for front squats.
Plus you can make a hatfield setup like this for added fun.
Yoke, deadlift, frame carry, sandbags, log.
There is no squat event though.
I would just do back squat then. Low bar or high bar, whatever your preference. You can load it more than front squat, so you get more strength out of it
I’d probably just low bar or SSB and let yourself really sit back - may as well get good at the “fail” positions of those events.
I think an argument could also be made for the front squat because I at least get a ton of core out of it. I agree you can’t load it as heavy. That’s a pro or a con depending how much the rest of your training beats you up. In fact, I think I just talked myself into putting front squat number one just to give your lower back a bit of a break.
Bingo. Looking at those events, that is VERY posterior chain/lower back taxing. Yoke, frame, sandbags and deads are going to already toast it, and even log can get pretty heavy on that. With no squat event or really anything terribly beneficial for squatting, I don’t see a reason to do heavy squatting leading up to this comp. I’ve prioritized front squat in my current training block for the same reason: it spares my lower back for more event work.
It also depends on what 5/3/1 program is being run as well though. One could do something like make the main lift a front squat and the supplemental lift a back squat, although I don’t see much need for that with these events.
