What rotation are you on now?
Also sorry if you mentioned but what you choosing for specialty?

I’m on Family. Split half inpt half outpt. I ended up choosing to do FM and I’m planning on doing a sports med fellowship after. I still find myself second guessing myself, as in if I should have done med/peds or FM/IM. The way I ended up deciding was I knew I liked outpt medicine. I love preventative care, primary care, nutritional medicine, integrative medicine, and sports. Those all tended to be more closely tied with FM than IM. In Columbus (where I plan on ending up) our generation is using IM to work as a hospitalist or specialize. The only consideration I had with going IM was to go into endo. My biggest concerns with the field are the implications of the ACA and if ultimately I’ll just be managing a bunch of NPs and PAs. The other thing that concerned me about family is some of the attendings I worked with did not seem to academically push themselves. However, two of the best and brightest physicians I worked with were in FM. I used that to tell myself it’s on me to educate myself and hold myself to a higher standard. Hopefully, I’m not a bitch and I end up doing that.
How are rotations going? Where you able to get any elective time scheduled with optho? Are you surviving the Madison winter?

Rotations are going. I am actualy away from ophtho now and heading into psych. Loved that rotation and the more i thought of it the more i saw it in other rotations the more i liked it. The job market is nice with a wide breadth of opportunities and plenty of growth. Hopefully some help with loans as well.

That’s quite the change, but I respect you for it. That’s an emotionally challenging field and there’s a huge demand. I wish you luck in that journey. Loans are a big pain in the ass, we’ll find a way out. Keep me updated as you start to go through the interview process.

Comment: moved this session back a day. I’ll probably go Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday this week. The bench is feeling better. My arms were still sore from the little arm session pre squat on Thursday. Just felt good to move after sitting all day yesterday. I still haven’t had over 50 grams of carbs in about 17 days. I’m eating a large Youngstown Pizza this week and I can’t wait.
Elite Sports Performance Summit: In order of how I thought their talk went
-
Buddy Morris- By far the best presenter. He is light years ahead of others in the business. Been around forever. Highlights from his speech is let people figure out how to do things - the brain was made for movement and problem solving. Read 1 hr a day. Learn how to coach. Hire people smarter than yourself. “if it don’t look right, it don’t fly right.” You need a cooldown. The Quicker it’s gained the quicker it’s lost.
-
Joe Kenn- talked about the tier approach to training. He brought a good point up about training order and talked about vertical training and being to apply explosiveness for a longer period of time.
-
Chip Morton - Talked about caring for your athletes. He’s been in the NFL for 20+ years and he speaks from a lot of experience with high level guys. His perception is that the training system doesn’t matter all that much. You need to invest in your players.
5 (tie) Mike Robertson- I was looking forward to this presentation more than any other. It was highly disappointing. If I took one thing away from his talk it was be efficient and don’t neglect components of training.
- (tie) Joe DeFranco - Talked about the prowler for 2 hours. His perception is stride length really matters.
Highlights: Got to hang out with my mentor and get lunch with the Maple Leafs former strength coach. Got to listen to Dave Tate talk about how they first implemented bands into their training at Westside. Got to see my old training partner and talk shop. Saw some former interns from Denison and got to catch up.
Thankful: for having the opportunity to see some top level coaches.
Thought: The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.

God bless, vigilance
