To correctly execute the Barbell Upright Row, is it advised to slightly retract the scapula/shoulder blades before doing the exercise? I really don’t want to injure myself again, thanks!
impingment?
how heavy do you do them?
I wouldn’t bother with upright rows if you’ve already injured yourself with them.
Width makes a big difference. A true upright row feels bad for me. Shoulder width is fine.
I have an impingement and can do them best with dumbells. Holding my scapula tight makes little difference. How far forward i flare my elbows and how high i lift the weight matters the most. I shoot for the pain to be zero to maybe a max of 2 on a scale of 1 to 10.

IMO, they are good for muscle building but they suck for shoulder health. Particularly if you already have shoulder issues. Take them out and substitute other exercises.
Edit: comment was meant for OP
i dont know if these are really much better, but i use a rope on the pulley machine and pull them about until i hit my armpits. these seem to be less painful on my shoulders. perhaps its because you can alter your grip width as you lift?
