Underrated Guitarists...

Sen’s a RUSH fan from way back, so I was just messin with him.

Very happy moment last night when I was walking around Chez Sen playing limelight on the ol’ acoustic. Sen Jr. asked me to teach him the bass line. He plays in his school’s jazz band. Spent the next hour jamming to a bunch of RUSH songs with the youngster.[/quote]

Damn, how cool is that? Proud papa.

That must have brought a tear to your eye, huh?

Blech. I’m not saying anything regarding Tool’s guitar player, but Rolling Stone is definitely not to be trusted regarding any top 100 lists. When some White Stripes’ song places in the top 100 best guitar solos, something’s amiss.

Metal guitarist, if you like technical, thrash, or just shredding. I may be a little bias, but here it is:

Ha, was thinking that as well.

Travis Meeks.

I was about to throw up as I hadn’t seen his name.

Petrucci is just silly.

But not underrated

I used to study with Petrucci back in the late 80s. He used to teach out of his parent’ house in Kings Park.

I also studied with Al Pitrelli (Megadeth, TSO, Alice Cooper) for a long time when I was in my early 20s…

Both amazing players.

Marty Friedman from Megadeth grew up down the street from me. He was really, really weird. The only guy I know that ever tried to ‘study’ with him invited him over one day to jam and Marty came over, hooked up his guitar, played some amazing stuff for about 3 minutes then raced out of the house screaming, ‘It’s hot in there’.

This is of course all second hand from the guy I knew, but he was a pretty reliable guy.

Freidman’s awesome - love Jason Becker too. Real tragedy about him…

My favorite player, and probably biggest influence is Paul Gilbert - just love his playing - melodic, lyrical and incredible speed and technique. His picking is absolutely spot on perfect - incredible synchronization.

I’d list my biggest influences as - Eddie VH, Rhoads, George Lynch, Gilbert and Joe Satch. Though I went thru a huge Yngwie/MacAlpine/Vinnie Moore phase in my late teens - the whole neo-classical bag. Now I lean way more towards guys like Satch and Vai - I like the less regimented melodic sense those guys have, while still maintaining that high-octane, impeccable technique…

Which brings up another (IMO) underrated (or, overlooked) guitarist-- Dave Mustaine

Marty and the previous guitar players (all monsters) get all the credit, but Dave is quite an accomplished and talented guitar player himself-- usually more known as singer/songwriter/producer for the band.

Steve Lukather

INSANELY GOOD ! Love the guy

I’ll add another name, one of my all time favs and a big influence, not because I think he’s underrated-- quite the opposite— he’s a “guitar player’s guitar player”. I just think the general public aside from hardcore fans and groupies would ever recognize the name:

Ty Tabor from King’s X

I once read that there would be no “Dimebag Darryl” if there was no Ty Tabor. That, from Dimebag himself (translation: Ty was a big influence on him).

Great calls on Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, Willie Nelson.

I see your Don Ross and raise you Pierre Bensusan.

If you’re going to mention Warren Haynes and Sonny Landreth (not underrated in the guitar world, but not too well known beyond it) we need to mention Derek Trucks as well.

Some others that come to mind that I haven’t seen yet:
Nils Kline - Huge chops, currently playing with Wilco.
Vince Gill - Very tasteful, mainly thought of as a singer.
Dave Alvin
M Ward
David Jacobs-Strain
Jimmy Herring - Played w/ The Dead for awhile recently
Chris Duarte

Good call on Alvin…

I can visualize a T-Shirt with “Who Is Dave Alvin” on the front.

The Blasters stuff is just classic.

Agreed. His newer stuff without The Blasters is pretty good too, though it can get pretty mellow. His live album ‘Out in California’ is great – just a kick-ass rock show by a kick-ass bar band.

Sin…I was going too…just forgot ! Hey, why not mention his wife too…Susan Tedeschi. That lady can not only jam but can sing.

I saw them both last year at a small venue here in NJ. Great show.

I agree the ones I mentioned aren’t really underrated…just possibly under appreciated.

You can say that guys like Eddie V are more well known then them, but I don’t think Eddie is better. Yes, the guy shreds, but Danny Gatton would give him a run for his money and 80% of the people out there who heard of Eddie, probably never heard of Danny.

Shoot…just listening to this guy and forgot how good he is…Johnny A

Get Inside is such a cool song. Fucking guy has a great tone.

Anyone mention Guthrie Govan yet?
