dean wean never seems to get the props he deserves…neither does dean deleo for that matter…
and willie nelson is definitely underated. not that people don’t recognize his playing just that the rest of him is so huge that his awesome playing goes overlooked in the same way that prince’s does…same thing with jj cale, that guy could play with anyone…oh and then there’s curt kirkwood, one of my all time favorites.
This thread…while well intentioned…make no fucking sense !
Steely D and the guy that said this should be re-titled Elite Guitar Players I Know That No One Else Knows Soes I’m Cool are spot on.
I do have to pile on though:
Billy Gibbons? Really? The guy is constanly cited as Hendrixes favorite guitar player. Can you imagine a world without his riffs from Tube Steak Boogie? Sharp Dressed Man? La Grange?
Alex Lifeson? He’s on the cover of Guitar Player at least once every 2 years. What guitar player doesn’t learn how to play Spirit of Radio or Limelight?
Anyway…sorry.
To be included as under-rated I’d think you’d have to eliminate anyone that’s been on the cover of a major magazine like guitar player.
Maybe I’m confusing ‘Underrated’ with ‘Unknown’…
Anyway…again…I played in a couple of bands with this guy growing up. He was just featured in Guitar Player Germany’s edition. Didn’t make the cover, but was a major feature.

He’s opened for Allan Holdsworth.

There’s a pretty decent guitarist named Richie Blackmore.
Sen’s a RUSH fan from way back, so I was just messin with him.[/quote]
Very happy moment last night when I was walking around Chez Sen playing limelight on the ol’ acoustic. Sen Jr. asked me to teach him the bass line. He plays in his school’s jazz band. Spent the next hour jamming to a bunch of RUSH songs with the youngster.
The guitarist for Tool (Adam Jones) isn’t too underrated. He’s rated as the 75th Greatest Guitarist of All Time by Rolling Stones, as well as critical acclaim from Guitar World (he was placed 9th out of 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists). And anyone who listens to Tool should be able to hear the talent all the band musicians carry.
In my eyes, Mark Tremonti is one of the most underrated guitarists. I also consider him one of the greatest guitarists of our (this) generation as well. He’s amazing on melodies, and can shred like crazy.
Theres alot of guys on youtube that are literally unknown aprt from their hme videos, yet tehir original songs are miles above what alot of todays guitar talents are producing. I know the chapman stick isn’t exactly a guitar, but youtube “one cloud” and get an idea of the music thats hiding out there.
