Rick Neilson – excellent.

Lindsey Buckingham? Fucking LEGENDARY!

and that guy who plays with tom petty

Mike Campbell – good call.

Jerry Reed is a legendary guitarist (‘Swamp Guitar’)

Lindsey Buckingham has a very different style of playing than most rock guitarists. It’s really cool to watch.

Jeff Healy - more unknown to non-guitar people, but he is amazing, especailly considering how he plays.

John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers is underrated though.

Jeff Healy was great. He died from cancer last year.

Don ross does some crazy shit

Jonathan Kreisberg, is currently unknown by most but is crazy as shit and probably in a few years will have a good name for himself

Govan Guthrie.

Bow down.

dean wean never seems to get the props he deserves…neither does dean deleo for that matter…

and willie nelson is definitely underated. not that people don’t recognize his playing just that the rest of him is so huge that his awesome playing goes overlooked in the same way that prince’s does…same thing with jj cale, that guy could play with anyone…oh and then there’s curt kirkwood, one of my all time favorites.

This thread…while well intentioned…make no fucking sense !

Steely D and the guy that said this should be re-titled Elite Guitar Players I Know That No One Else Knows Soes I’m Cool are spot on.

I do have to pile on though:

Billy Gibbons? Really? The guy is constanly cited as Hendrixes favorite guitar player. Can you imagine a world without his riffs from Tube Steak Boogie? Sharp Dressed Man? La Grange?

Alex Lifeson? He’s on the cover of Guitar Player at least once every 2 years. What guitar player doesn’t learn how to play Spirit of Radio or Limelight?

Anyway…sorry.

To be included as under-rated I’d think you’d have to eliminate anyone that’s been on the cover of a major magazine like guitar player.

Maybe I’m confusing ‘Underrated’ with ‘Unknown’…

Anyway…again…I played in a couple of bands with this guy growing up. He was just featured in Guitar Player Germany’s edition. Didn’t make the cover, but was a major feature.

He’s opened for Allan Holdsworth.

There’s a pretty decent guitarist named Richie Blackmore.

Have you heard of him? REALLY underrated.

Who’s Alex Lifeson?

Blackmore is not ‘pretty decent’…more like exceptional.

Lifeson is the guitarist from Rush…another exeptional one.

I guess this whole ‘underrated’ thing is tough to put a finger on.

Is it easier to determine who is ‘overrated’?

I think a 'Hey, Did You Guys Ever Hear of These Guitar Players?" thread would be better.

I know, I was being sarcastic.

Blackmore is one of my all time favorite guitarists.

Sen’s a RUSH fan from way back, so I was just messin with him.

Damn…I thought so !! Ya got me !

Neil Zaza.

Al Pitrelli.

Michael Lee Firkins.

Ronnie Le Tekro.

Very happy moment last night when I was walking around Chez Sen playing limelight on the ol’ acoustic. Sen Jr. asked me to teach him the bass line. He plays in his school’s jazz band. Spent the next hour jamming to a bunch of RUSH songs with the youngster.

The guitarist for Tool (Adam Jones) isn’t too underrated. He’s rated as the 75th Greatest Guitarist of All Time by Rolling Stones, as well as critical acclaim from Guitar World (he was placed 9th out of 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists). And anyone who listens to Tool should be able to hear the talent all the band musicians carry.

In my eyes, Mark Tremonti is one of the most underrated guitarists. I also consider him one of the greatest guitarists of our (this) generation as well. He’s amazing on melodies, and can shred like crazy.

Pat McManus - Indian, Pat McManus Band, Mama’s Boys

Incredible.

Theres alot of guys on youtube that are literally unknown aprt from their hme videos, yet tehir original songs are miles above what alot of todays guitar talents are producing. I know the chapman stick isn’t exactly a guitar, but youtube “one cloud” and get an idea of the music thats hiding out there.

mark knopfler?
sly stone?
greg allman?
billy gibbons?

Sonny Landreth
Gary Moore
Warren Haynes

More that are probably not ‘underrated’ but not mentioned most of the time.

rocky george-suicidal tendencies!
