The two hand tapping at the beginning of this and around 2:10 is crazy.

This guy did some video lessons for Guitar Techniques magazine.

One more from Kiko:

Joe Bonamassa.

Robert Cray

Both can play AND sing.

Joey Santiago - The Pixies
Al Di Meola - Unknown to non-guitarists
Chris Pollock - Ex-Megadeth (pre Marty)

And another vote for Kim Thayil, I absolutely love his work on 4th of July.

I don’t know about including Al. He’s about as well-known as a non pop/rock/blues/country guitarist is going to get. He’s certainly very well known in the jazz and fusion worlds, so if he’s ‘unknown’ then so are the Metheny/Scofield/Lagrene/Hall/Mclaughlin/Martino types, not to mention classical players.

Speaking of classical players, Andrew York is great.

Anyone heard of Shawn Lane? That guy smokes, he was a local legend in Memphis for good reason. One of the first shredders I heard that actually had emotion in his playing.

Another local guitarist I dig a lot is Eric Gales.

Link Wray

So here’s a guy that I’d bet nobody here has heard of – he’s both underrated and damn near completely unrecognized. But I’ll say this: I’ve been playing for, oh, 13 years and listening for longer, and this kid is on my short list for most flat-out, annoyingly too-young-to-be-this-good, make-me wanna-smash-my-guitar talents I’ve ever heard. He’s SO unrecognized, all I can share are these shitty ‘home video’ type recordings with TERRIBLE sound quality. But look him up, and if he comes to a town near you, check him out. His name is David Jacobs-Strain. Though most of his stuff is heavily delta blues-influenced, he’s very versatile – a killer fingerstyle player, and a killer slide payer…

The ultimate underrated, underappreciated guitarist of all-time: Lenny Breau

Damn, that’s one of those guys that makes you not want to pickup a guitar again. He makes it look effortless.

This whole thread’s making me feel like that.

I am a hacker from way back, and some times these guys inspire, other times they make me throw my hands in the air and say ‘It’s no use…I suck’

Yeah…it’s kinda like lifting…I’m feeling pretty big and strong compared to the other 35+ year old guys at my neighborhood pool and then I see 100 lb girls and 78 year old men that can snatch more than me.

Rock on !

That sounds about right. I made 120/160 in a meet as a 94kg a few years back. Won it. Friend of mine (non-lifter) said, “You should try for the Olympics.” I said, “Yeah. I could win the gold. If I was a 69kg woman.”

I play guitar, too. And it’s about the same deal.

I say Robby Kreiger.

Mark Rizzo: Cavalera Conspiracy, Soulfly and Ill Nino. He is fucking good

I’ve had the ultimate honor of jamming with his brother, Denny (an amazing guitarist in his own right: http://www.dennybreau.com/bio.htm ), at a Maine Academy of Country Music benefit.

Although Lenny is usually referred to as a Canadian guitarist, the ‘Breaus’ are from this area in Maine.

Underrated… Mark Tremonti from Creed.
I don’t know if I’d call Mark underrated…In todays modern rock world I have the feeling he is well recognized…Granted, if you’re talking about his work with Creed, then yes, he didn’t really put his talent out for all to see until Alter Bridge was formed…Regardless Mark Tremonti = Badass mother fucker. Alter Bridge’s “Blackbird” is a rock masterpiece!

Thanks for posting. Great player, makes me want to start practicing 4 hours a day.

Spending the last few years in the Mississippi delta I’m surprised Robert Johnson never gets a mention in “great guitarist” conversations.
I wouldn’t call him underrated. Most great guitar guys give him loads of credit.
