Underrated Guitarists...

My favorite Roy Buchanan tune

Testy…that’s what I mean when I agreed with Steely about what defines underrated.

I listed those 2, even though they are highly regarded, based on probaly most people not even knowing who they are.

But, I do believe their skills are unmatched by most while others are much more regarded and talked about that probably couldn’t shine their shoes.

Yes, its a shame Jimi, SRV, Duane, Danny and Roy are dead.

My friend and I used to play a game and try to field a baseball team with great guitarists.

Our outfield was Hendrix, Duane and SRV. Roy was behind the plate. Santana pitched since their is a pitcher named Santana in MLB.

First base was Page, Second was Beck. ShortStop was Clapton, Third base was Townsend…and obviously we had a lot of designated hitters !

We used to do it with just blues guitarists, rock guitarists, etc.

Never could come up with a team of classical guitarist.

Testy…one other thing. I love Zappa and think he was a trail blazer in many ways.

Anyone who likes him LISTENS to music and I mean that in a good way.

I never got into him as much as I would have liked due to being a total Zep head and hard rock junkie from the 70’s, but his music is very unique.

thank you, It’s funny what you said about being a Zep head. I have a home made Led Zeppelin tattoo from when I was 16 and it’s SPELLED WRONG.

What about Ted Nugent??

His early work with the Amboy Dukes had some real musical soul, unlike his later commercial crap, once he went popular.

I love ya Momma, but how’s Ted Underrated? He even calls himself the best guitarist in the world!
HA! The Nuge calls himself a lot of things. He’s a legend in his own mind. Ted used to set up a lot of live guitar duels back in the day. I’ve heard that Marino play-off before, I know there’s got to be several others out there, with Wayne Kramer, Bob Seger and others.

Ted vs Mike Pinera, circa 1970.
Groovy, man.

Frank Marino ate him for lunch in an on stage guitar duel. Ted just rolled his amps on stage during Frank’s set and just started playing. Here the story

Tales of the Unexpected was always one of my favorites, though I always thought Marino was highly regarded, not underrated. Kind of like Trower during that era.
Ha, cool story especially since, I think nugents a loudmouth.

Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top

Ted Nugents idol.

Doug Gillard

Here he is with Guided By Voices (one of the best “unknown” bands ever).

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida baby. good stuff.

I wore out my vinyl version of Amboy Dukes Survival of the fittest.

I’d like to add Matt Murphy to the list.

Wow! Page 3 and no Don Ross

The second makes me want to quit guitar

Tony Macalpine

Ah…good call on the Don Ross.

Zakk Wylde.

His solo’s are awesome.

And he’s also not really underrated as he’s frequented the cover of many guitar magazines and is constantly referred to as a guitar god.

I think of ‘underrated’ guitar players as those who are responsible for so many songs and so ubiquitous that you’re constantly hearing them and really never know who they are.

Who are these guys?

Neil Geraldo
Elliot Easton
Nile Rodgers

Be honest-- did you know them as great guitar players at the mere mention of their names? They’re not hardly ‘great but unknown’ like some guitar prodigy in B.F., Oklahoma.

Each are responsible for 10’s of millions of records sold, dozens of songs (100’s in Roger’s case), have influenced hoards of guitar players, and at least in the 80’s (and even today in ‘replay’) are hard not to hear at any given time on the radio.

Not to mention each are brilliant guitarists.

Who are they?

Neil Geraldo (Pat Benetar’s Band leader/guitarist/songwriter/producer/husband)

Elliot Easton (Cars guitarist/songwriter/producer)

Nile Rodgers (One of the pioneers of disco/funk/groove, Chic guitar player, session guitarist/producer/songwriter)

Each hardly mentioned at the top list of guitarists and seriously (IMHO) underrated.

Counting Don Ross is like mentioning Leo Kottke, relatively obscure, but certainly highly rated by those who know of him.
