Underrated Guitarists...

I’d say Tony Iommi is overrated. His tone isn’t very good and his playing is quite sloppy.

Sure he gets points for writing some decent riffs in Black Sabbath, but I’d hardly say he’s underrated.[/quote]

We’ll have to agree to disagree, he is the foundation of metal IMO.

SRV, greatest guitarist of all time.

Chris Whitley

As a guitarist Prince is totally underrated, not that I am a huge fan or anything…just sayin’.

Damon Fowler out of the Tampa area. If you guys like blues, rock, or roots this is the guy to check out. Plays a lot of clubs up and down the west coast of florida, sometimes come to georgia. This guy can plain out play!

Agreed. That little guy can shred. Saw him in concert about two years ago. Just awesome.

The gutarist for Tool…I can’t recall his name at the moment.

Adam Jones. Love Tool…

Adam Jones. I also agree that he’s underrated.

John Sykes - Thin Lizzy/Whitesnake/Blue Murder

You have excellent taste, even though you suck for posting the answer before me.

Yeah, and hence, he’s not underrated.

And seriously, to the guy who put John Petrucci, wtf? Anybody who’s picked up a guitar magazine could tell you who he is and that he’s far from underrated.

This thread should just be renamed “Favourite Guitarists/Esoteric Guitarists that Make Me Sound Like a Guitar Elitist”

Good call. Puts Thin Lizzy’s Thunder and Lighting in \m/

What about Ted Nugent??

His early work with the Amboy Dukes had some real musical soul, unlike his later commercial crap, once he went popular.

Toki. Swizgar gets all the attention.

Save “Great White Buffalo”

I love ya Momma, but how’s Ted Underrated? He even calls himself the best guitarist in the world!

Frank Marino ate him for lunch in an on stage guitar duel. Ted just rolled his amps on stage during Frank’s set and just started playing. Here the story

Tales of the Unexpected was always one of my favorites, though I always thought Marino was highly regarded, not underrated. Kind of like Trower during that era.

You CANNOT put SRV in the undertated category. Same with Duane Allman and Jeff Beck.

Those 3 are in my top 5 of the all time greatest guitarists. Just because they are not talked about in the same sentences as Hendirx, Page ( my other 2), etc. does not make them underrated.

I agree with Steely…define underrated.

Here are 2 I feel are:

Roy Buchanan
Danny Gatton

I can also probably list a few blues and jazz quitarists that are never talked about that blow away about 70% of the rock guitarists out there today.

What about Bob Mould? Was he good enough to even be considered underrated?

I agree entirely, although Buchanan and Gatton are highly regarded, just not widely known. Funny you mention two guys who both offed themselves.
