Dr. Darden,

What was the purpose of Dorian Yates performing the nautilus pullover with an underhand grip in lieu of the conventional overhand grip?

Underhand really gets the lower lats.
On a Pullover machine you don’t use your hands. Does DY use his? Are you talking about pulldowns?
It is possible to use your hands. I have pulled with my hands before, though it might be considered incorrect use.
But IMO, you must use your hands to assure your elbows are secure and don’t slip, even if you are not pulling with your hands.
I’m aware. I used to own a Nautilus Pullover.
Okay. Then why did you say:
Sure you can use it however you want.
Would you feel better if I would have said it was not designed to use your arms? To take the arms out of the movement? That’s the whole idea.
Or do you want to pick apart this reply too?
I didnt ask if DY is using his hands, his grip is underhand vs overhand and am curious as to why
And possibly to limit the involvement of the long head of the triceps.
I prefer using an underhand grip on Pullover machine also like Dorian
My unqualified opinion: I think it does target the lower lats better and also minimizes the trapezius muscles involvement better than the overhand grip
Yes. You should have stated that in your initial comment. Had you done that I would not have commented. Details are important when referencing an exercise.
This can be interpreted as “hands off.” When my gym got a Nautilus Pullover Machine it was one of the very first made. Cable driven and plate loaded. It came with no instructions. I pulled as hard with my hands as I did with my elbows. I curled at the waist engaging my abs in the contracted position. Later I liked keeping my back arched the entire ROM. Like I said. We had no instruction manual.
