Under 200 lbs Progress/Update Thread

Conventional. I’ve found Wendler’s formula for calculating a 1RM to be pretty accurate for me.

EDIT: Also, my entry form and fee for the comp in July will be in the mail tomorrow. I looked at the American records for the division and weight class I’m entering in, and I have a shot at the record for each lift. I was only 5 pounds off the squat record back in May.

295x8 squats +10lb pr

Made my own box for box squats yesterday. Next project is a homemade sled/prowler. Still need to come up with a final design, though. I really wish I had a welder…

Check Craigslist under services. A lot of the guys who do it just want an excuse to weld something, so you can get a deal.

Made my sled today. Getting rope tomorrow.

Bench PR yesterday, 185lbs @ 133 bodyweight. PUMPED! gonna get 200 at nationals

this isn’t lifting but hopefully entertaining. my 54" box jump yesterday after squat deload.

Nice 2scoops. I take it those are your blocks for block pulls? How did you make those?

It can be done very well with wood also. Think build the shape with 2x6s (three layers), attach 4x4s where you want your skids (cutting each with an angle on the end), then buy some strips of heavy hardened steel and bend them up on each end and screw them on as skids. To add uprights for pushing 2 inch fence poles and an additional block on top for extra support (four layers of 2x6 where the pole is inserted in a drilled 2 inch hole). My training group has one like this that works very well, and can be broken down to fit in a trunk easily by using a tractor pin to hold it together.

I’ll speak for him. We don’t block pull on those as I don’t think they could handle it. They’re for squatting and whatever else. We do have some pulling blocks that I made though that are essentially built like a floor is with 2x6s (one every 4-5 inches) on edge and 3/4 plywood on top. I made them with an angle on the top so the bar doesn’t roll, but in retrospect I wouldn’t do this, but instead just add a rim so it can’t roll off. I’d also recommend 2 layes of plywood, because them seem to be taking a beating with 500-700 pounds hitting them repeatedly and sometimes off center (the end of the plates does the damage). Perhaps a covering of carpet or heavy rubber would be good as well. The second iteration will be better. When I do it I’ll take a picture for you.

Is that you in the avatar? I’ve been experimenting with narrowing my stance into a narrow semi-sumo like that one in the avatar. Do you have any tips for that style?

I tried pointing my feet directly forward, but then I couldn’t get my shins to touch the bar in the bottom position so I pointed them out a smidge and I could do it. With a wide sumo, I can’t break the floor worth crap, but with conventional I can’t lock out worth a damn so I’m hoping this will be my happy medium. Also, the wide sumo was beating up my posterior hip capsule and hip flexors.

Why’d you decide on that style?

It is me in the avatar. I liked the narrow sumo stance a lot (been pulling some conventional lately though) and like you can’t break the floor with a wide stance. I usually have my feet pretty straight, but I don’t worry about my shins touching the bar. In essence when I pull that way I just do a conventional deadlift with my feet outside my arms. A few people tried to get me to have the bar closer to my shins like a wide sumo puller would do, but if you go narrower I feel this is a mistake (especially with my leverages). Having the bar slightly forward (over mid-foot) I find to be ideal.

I decided on this style, because initially I couldn’t get into position for a good conventional pull and going wide hurt my hips, so this stance just made sense. Now that my upperback and hams are stronger though and perhaps my leverages have changed (gained 25 pounds) my conventional pull is roughly even with the semi-sumo.

PR’s set this week:

Press: 175x3
Deadlift: 475x1 (got the second rep just above my knees and couldn’t lock it out)
Bench: 275x1
Squat: 405x2 (could’ve had 3 or maybe 4 but I left a bit in the tank)

Played around with my squat box during warmups, it is perfectly at parallel. I think I should have made it maybe an inch lower, but oh well. I usually go way below parallel, but I might be able to get a bit more poundage if I can go to just parallel and still get those white lights.

Nice job black_angus. Strong pressing and squatting.

I hit some PRs myself this week.

335 touch and go bench
430 squat
532 deadlift

The 1st 6 weeks of the squat cycle I posted maybe a couple pages back yielded a good 25lb PR. I started light to try and cement some form changes which I’m liking and they fixed a nagging hip flexor. I didn’t mean to take a single this week either, but sometimes lifting heavy weights happens.

squat PR yesterday, 290!

Just did my first powerlifting meet last Saturday. They’re not true PRs, but definitely the most I’ve done at 144 lbs. =)

308 squat

215 bench press

419 deadlift for a provincial record!

Just started focusing on pure strength work recently. Numbers aren’t nearly as good as the ones I see up here but hopefully they’ll change quick.

6’0’’
190 lbs

Squat (Oly style ATG): 300x1
Bench: 250x1
Deadlift: 405x1

I’m in the first week of a new round of 5/3/1 right now - hoping to make some good progress.

Got a meet fast approaching on July 16th. My bodyweight is down to around 182-183 in the morning shooting for 181 day of the meet. Pulled 515 today with more in the tank and front squatted 315 for reps. One more week of heavy training before my deload on meet week.

Singlet came today. Ready for the meet on Saturday, and to set some PR’s and hopefully break a record or two or three.

yall are seriously strong midgets.
