Just started lifting at Wichita Falls Athletic Center (Rippetoe’s Gym) this week so I’m hoping to hit a solid 500+ squat/dead and 300+ bench soon with the added coaching and great environment. Been training basically on my own for the past two years following 5/3/1 with varied assistance templates.
OOOH! Me too! Disclaimer: I am one banged up dude. Symptompatic disc pathology at 5 levels and nerve damage in all 4 limbs. This is why I lift though, so I an still pretend to be normal.
Historically, I’ve benched 365, squatted 315x10 (never went heavy back in the day), and meh on deadlift. This was before the spine and nerve damage got bad.

In my current state of decrapitude:
Squat (ATG) - 275
Squat (PL style) - 315
Bench - 275
Deadlift - 475
My lifting is geared around neural rehabilitation, so while I consider myself a strength athlete (and do/plan to compete), my workouts are designed to get my healthier first, stronger second, while minimizing weight gain.
Goals for the end of 2011 are to get the bench to 315, squat 365, and DL 550. Preferably in competition. Oh, and, stay out of a wheelchair lol.
Currently training using a modified Starting Strength protocol.

Squatted today, decided to stick with regular squats as my main and did box squats as an assistance. And wow. Do they burn or do they burn.
I also saw this dad teaching his kids to ‘squat’ in the smith machine. Sad day.
Sad to say I see this sort of thing on bi or tri weekly basis. I was working at Gold’s as a trainer and front desk “shake maker” for a little bit for some extra cash and I would see a dad taking his kid from machine to machine, reading the explanation cards on each and then instructing his kid to do a half-assed version of said machine. Needless to say, any advice I tried to provide wasn’t received very well.

I lift at my universities rec center so I rarely see anyone squatting, but seeing a dad teaching his kids how to ‘squat’ had me shaking my head.
I don’t think I’ll ever bench without a spotter ever again. I did 155 for 3, and it felt pretty heavy (I’m terrible at bench), but I decided to try 165 for a single. Got some one to spot me and it felt lighter than the 155 so ended up tripling that just out of pure shock. And no he didnt touch the bar at all after the lift off.
I might not be able to post in this thread much longer…weighed in at my friend’s house (he has a good working scale, unlike me), weighed 200.3. Time to start eating a bit cleaner. I’d eventually like to compete at 181.
Angus, you just graduated HS. You need to focus on strength and let your adult body level out where it’s supposed to weigh. You’re robbing yourself of amazing gains trying to stay the same weight at 18.
Had my first meet on Saturday. The ADAU (Raw, no straps, drug tested) State championships.
Weighed in at 160.00
Squat - 418lbs. Felt pretty good, I was conservative because I heard their judging was very strict (it was)
Bench- 270lbs- felt good, got redlighted though because I didnt wait for them to say rack. silly gym habits.
Deadlift- 512lbs. I was definitely psyched about that one.
I got 2nd in my division (thanks to that bench that didnt count!)

By “cut” I don’t mean anything drastic. I just mean some sprints and cardio here and there and keeping the diet clean. My body adjusts to whatever weight I’m at fairly easily, which is something I’m fairly thankful for.
I’d rather lose a bit of weight now than have a very hard time doing it when I’m 40.

Hmm, thats odd. Does T-Nation not accept MOV files? I was trying to upload that from my iphone…
Upload it to your computer, go to advanced message, and attach the video from your files. If that’s what you tried then idk.
Probably better off just uploading to youtube and posting the link. So many other sites do video hosting much better than T-Nation, IDK why they offer it.
I messed up my shoulder two Fridays ago, but it’s getting a lot better. I was able to get 5,5,8 on 275 on bench yesterday for a PR after not benching for 2 weeks. I was surprised and really happy with that.
470 which is 5 lbs higher than my last meet while weighing 9 lbs less. Gym max is 475 at the higher bodyweight so some improvement though may need another inch or so on depth. I’ve been working on my technique some, brought my stance in a bit and working on my tightness and uprightness out of the hole. Also anyone know how to rotate a video in youtube? My flip camera died so I’m resorting to using my phone so no pre-loading onto my computer for editing.
