Looking to get my squat higher, struggling to maintain depth at any weight higher than that, any suggestions as to how to improve my squats. I’ve been steadily going up in all my lifts except for squats and recently my deadlift has shot out the roof, but squats still remain at the same.

The best thing I’ve done for my squat is speed box squats with accomadating resistance. If you squat narrow, you might want to leave the box out of it or be very careful to simulate your free squat form when using the box. At least that’s what I’ve heard around here, but I squat wide and low-bar so I’m not speaking from experience. Maybe some of the stronger and more experienced here can chime in.

Damn has anyone tried running smolov jr before? I just did my 7th workout with 220 8x4… I can’t say that I wasn’t gonna finish but it’s just starting to feel like sooooo much benching… Do you think that for a non-enhanced lifter running only the first 8 workouts of the meso a good plan to avoid total overtraining? I’ve only been doing 3xweek but as I am on crutches my tris and chest and shoulders are getting demolished. Thoughts?
I injured my ankle at football practice about a week and a half ago so I decided to give smolov jr for bench a try aswell. Im doing the whole thing narrow grip (about an inch inside shoulders) since its a little easier on the body and I started failing my bench at lockout anyways. Hopefully I can kill two birds with one stone haha. Im attempting to do the four workouts a week and just finished the second week of 6x6, my triceps were definately destroyed afterwards luckily I havent been sore afterwards yet hope that continues. Good luck with your progress let me know how it goes.
This has been a great week of lifting (my lifting week starts saturday) so far. I have blown up my rep PR’s in everything. I think I should have changed my playlist to death metal a long time ago.
Well first meet is tomorrow. Made weight this morning (had to drop 9 lbs) and now getting back on up.
Listed openers are 425/250/475. Hoping to go 500+/300/550+. I’d love to see an elite total here for my first meet but I’d say that’s pushing it and my bench is holding me back a bit. Contemplating using wraps since they’re allowed for this federation but I don’t have any/haven’t trained with them ever before so we’ll see.

SPF (Southern Powerlifting Federation) - 181 class raw. Also anyone know how much knee wraps help for squat approximately? I’m tempted to give them a go, especially since where I fail is definitely related to my legs. I can good morning a triple with the same weight as my max training squat.

I’ve heard about 20lbs. I hate the dam things tho the first time someone put them on me I felt like I couldnt squat anything, they bound all up behind my knee and it just didnt feel comfortable. Not feeling your toes is a whole other thing haha. I’d say just do what you do and try them out for the next meet if you’ve never worn them before. Oh and kick ass.

I have no clue and dont care how much they add, and I recommend you stop caring as well. Heres the deal, they do help, they provide support and rebound, nothing close to gear though. If you have never used em before, I caution you from trying them out for the first time tomorrow, cause they are extremely uncomfortable when tied on correctly
I’ll be at the same meet as LM tomorrow. Weighed in at 179 and I picked 315/225/335 for my openers. I havent really had time to get nervous, but I’m sure it’ll hit me tomorrow. Should be fun.
So far I’ve got:
wraps (knee/wrist)
belt
Chalk
Ammonia
Finibars
Shoes/socks/deadlift socks
Unisuit (am I allowed to freeball under this?)
Hookers and blow
Food:
protein shakes/bars maybe a sub sandwich and lots of gatorade/water

Maybe some trailmix or something you can grab by the handful and shovel into your mouth.
Foam roller/pvc, if you got it
Camera and someone to operate it if possible
MP3 player, headphones, fresh batteries possibly
That’s all I can think to add. Sink your first squat, and your nerves will calm down, open light on your bench, and pull like a mother fucker on deads. Also, wait for commands. When in doubt, wait it out. Don’t come up from the squat and dive it into the rack, and same with bench after lockout. Hold it. At my first meet last weekend, I was 1 of 2 first timers who didn’t make any newb mistakes. Had guys jumping signals, opening too heavy, and not paying attention.

Is it important to have anyone go with ya for lift offs and what not? Chaz you’re giving me a lift off if no one else will. Team T-Nation woop woop
You got it dude. Is there only two people on team T-Nation? lol.
You don’t need to bring someone to give a lift-off, as there should be plenty of people there (spotters/loaders) that would be able to do that for you. If you go that route, I’d let them know how you like it and make sure it’s on your count. Oh, and they should know to GTFO of the way once you’ve got it, for the head judge to see.
