Unable to Gain Weight

I intentionally went easy on upping my calories in order to stay lean.

But I increased my sleep significantly.

Despite all that I again have problems with tiredness and sleepiness during the day. I’m trying to combat that by taking multi vitamin and multi mineral suplements. But I just recently started so I’ll see with time if that makes a difference.

I’m so sorry you are tired! That can be so unmotivating. Try to do what you can because your health is number one. Sleep is very important and if you need it then do it :hugs:

Yep, I’m not holding back on my sleep… I sleep as much as I can.

But I’m still tired, mentally I feel great. Much better than before, I’m motivated for both, my goals in the gym and also goals about career. My apetite is OK, my libido never had problems… just I’m kinda feeling drained.

I felt like that before, then when I suddenly upped my calories 2-3 weeks ago, I had more energy for about a week, then I slowly went back to how I felt before. So I hope those vitamin and mineral pills will make some improvements xD

I do too much and am constantly drained. It’s tough. Just love yourself and it’ll make things easier for you. I have always had to fight for what I needed or wanted but was never good enough. Now I’m realizing that the abyss of frustration anger is killing me. Just spent two hours at dog park. Had a great time. Feel at peace. I focused on one thing…relaxing with da boyz, and I don’t feel so drained. I feel content and am so thankful for what I dohave.

I enjoy putting in work and getting results at the gym, but to me it’s pointless if I’m exhausted and drained everyday or in constant pain because I’m pushing too hard. I think part of training is finding that sweet spot where you’re still pushing yourself and making progress, but still able to function in day to day life, or making lifestyle changes that help you. I think it’s also a better training mentality to have to start early in thinking longterm and prefer slow progress over getting hurt and making no progress (or setting yourself back).

For example, on training days I’ll go to work early so I can come home early so that I can eat and take a nap before I train. I also haven’t attempted a 1RM on any main lift since December.

But problem is that I’m probably not pushing too hard in the gym.

I’ll just in case try to go bit easier to see if that makes an improvement. Or I can try going more often, but train with less intensity.

That’s the trick finding out what works best for you. Have you checked out @ChrisThibaudeau. His neurotypying is intriguing. I need to read his new article again…skimmed it.

I’ll definitley give it a look, besides tommorrow I’ll finally step on scale after 3 weeks and see if my new diet plan has made improvements.

As far as gym goes - my numbers went up, which is a good thing. Not by a lot, but it did move on all lifts and I’m happy with that.
And I kinda have feeling that those vitamin supplements are working, and that I was tired because of that cause, I’m taking them for few days now and today I’m much less sleepy than yesterday in this time. I mean, I can’t fall asleep now, but I feel kinda sleepy, I just woke up after 9 hours of sleep.

It is possible that this was happening because I’m not eating enough fruits. Which isn’t my ideal food to up my calories now.

Fruits are wonderful. Their nutrition is bountiful. You sound scared to up calories…

I’m scared of getting fat. I openly admit that.

So I’ll rather go slow and steady than to gain the same amount of muscle and fat, or even worse - gain more fat than muscle.

Reason more for doing it slow - it’s summer now xD

Being unable to gain weight and afraid of getting fat is like being a straight D student who doesn’t want to enroll in an undergrad program because they are afraid they might accidentally get a PhD.

I’m sure you notice I’ve tuned it down a few notches

OK this had me bust laughing… but I’ll still go easy. Because if I stretch my stomach too much, I might get fat when I get old.

You’ll get fat when you get old if you eat too much food as you get older. That’s how getting fat occurs. You will not get fat when you get older because of a stretched stomach in your youth.

If you simply don’t want to eat a lot of food, that’s the only reason you need to have to not eat a lot of food. The rest of these things you’re coming up with are silly.

What? I’m a little confused. Your worried you’ll be fat later in life so want to gain muscle but not eat more. I need it in gun speech…cuz it doesn’t make sense

No, I say I want to up my calories to gain muscle.

Not to overeat, there is a difference. If you overeat so much that it hurts - you might stretch your stomach, which isn’t a good thing.

If I get myself fat and need to cut, then there’s high chance I’ll get fat again later in life.

I assure you that whoever told you this does not understand biology.

If you’re worried about getting fat, look into mini-cuts every few months. The only problem is that it would stop your momentum.

I don’t like tracking macros too closely, but I track once and based on that idea of what I’m eating, I build a habit of eating what I need to eat to grow, or currently, maintain my size. A mini-cut would throw that off because I’m so used to intuitively eating what I eat.

Another suggestion would be doing cardio once or twice a week. It would give you peace of mind, but it would slow your weight gain progress. Honestly, I stopped doing all cardio and accessory when I was younger so I can put on size faster (not doing accessory was probably dumb tho).

Not to hijack your thread, but I did a bodyscan the other day:
31 years old 5’8, 189lbs, 21% bodyfat. I plan on competing at 181 for powerlifting so I’ll probably put on some damn size between now and then since I’ll be water cutting anyway (I have teammates at 198 who are way stronger than me for my lifts to count in team scoring)

Thing about me is that I’m not in a hurry. Even if I gain just 1kg a month I’ll be happy with it if it’s lean muscle.

I also feel like I have more control if I go at slow pace.

Bulking and then cutting or just gaining mass slower - it will take equal ammount of time for same result I assume?

I’ve only cut for a powerlifting meet and was at that weight for like an hour, so I’m not the best person to ask that. Nor am I that lean.

If you’re eating slightly above maintenance and gaining 1kg a month, I think that’s super sustainable.
