There is definitively SOME of that, yes. But the freak fights doesn’t affect the serious fights. To me it seems like you really hate that MMA is becoming more popular than boxing, and you use every opportunity to bash on MMA.[/quote]
Then you don’t have any kind of reading comprehension. I don’t give a fuck about MMA one way or another- whether it becomes popular or not doesn’t matter to me- it doesn’t affect boxing.
And on top of that, I’ve said many times that while whites have turned their attention to MMA, most minorities are still all about boxing.
And finally, I’ve trained MMA, BJJ, and all sorts of other shit. I love doing all of them, and I truly respect the athletes in every sport. Watching it is just not for me- especially when Dana fuckin White is running the show there.
Why? Because you know the first thing he’ll say when Toney gets tapped out- “This proves MMA is better than boxing.”
What’s it better for? Who knows. It’s like saying that football is “better” than sprinting because there’s more skills involved.

I’m starting to see why you’re angrier than before, Irish.

It’s not like DFW sought Toney out, boxers are doing this to themselves. Toney stalked Dana at UFC’s, made videos posted shit on youtube. On a related story Mayorga is fighting Din fucking Thomas, that’s the worst first fight a boxer could ask for.

I’m sure that’s exactly what he’s planning on doing. I mean that with no sarcasm. I actually think he will try to get Toney a couple of winnable fights so that he can set up a mega-PPV with James Toney vs. Randy Couture, which we all know will likely result in Randy taking him down or mauling him against the cage to grind out a dominant decision or GNP TKO.
Dana will say how this proves that UFC fighters are the most well-rounded and superior to boxing, blah blah blah and he’ll make a big payday.
Yes, it’s kind of a douche move, but you also have to admit there is some business savvy there. Say what you want about Dana, but he’s no dummy. He saw how much attention Herschel got and he’s got to know that a Herschel vs. Toney matchup could do a huge PPV card or help get Strikeforce established on CBS. So, he can either build Toney up to make some money off him, or throw Toney against somebody who will obviously beat him down and “prove the superiority of MMA.”
Douchey? Yes. Smart? Time will tell, but I think so.
He’s just being brought in as a ratings whore for strikeforce counter programing. They also wouldn’t sign him until they heard SF was talking with him. I don’t see anything wrong with this.
I started watching UFC to see one style pitted against another. Guys still come from a particular discipline all the time. Toney is a bit old but he still has the ability to end a fight in an instant. I find this much more interesting than Walker, Canseco, or Kimbo.
I don’t think the UFC is using this to prove MMA is better than boxing. Dana is boxing fan and the UFC has not been chasing boxers to sign them up and put them in the ring.
As far as what’s good for MMA or what’s bad for MMA.
What’s good for MMA is fights that people pay to see. I like all different kinds of fights. I like watching a couple of good grapplers go at it. I like a good brawl. I don’t mind a freak show if it’s competitive and there is a chance for an exciting finish. Assuming he can get in shape, I’ll pay for a card that has Toney on it. You throw him in against some one with weak TDs and I’ll watch it. Why not?
Kinda news is they are moving Mitrione Kimbo to UFN 22, and then Toney will get their spot. Sucks for SF there card is better than UFN 22 but people like watching Kimbo and more people have Spike.

Fair enough, I just figured it as a likely reason for all your negativity towards MMA.

This might be true. But the popularity of MMA has sky-rocketed during the last few years, and it’s likely to surpass boxing.

Dana White is a clown. I don’t like the guy either. But having a clown as the president for the UFC doesn’t make the actual fights less entertaining.

It would not surprise me if he says something like that. Not at all. If he thinks he will benefit from saying this, he will do it. The only reason I think that he MIGHT not use this argument is that maybe he will realize how transparent the argument will seem to everyone. Not that he has a great record for realizing that sort of stuff in other situations though…

Uh, yea… among white people. Just because white males like it more doesn’t mean… well, anything, really.
And who gives a shit if it surpasses boxing? No one worries that it’s going to surpass football… why the fuck do we care if it’s more popular than boxing? Plenty of sports are more popular than boxing, and really it hasn’t done dick to change the sport.
No. I’m just saying that a sport that I don’t like watching in the first place is becoming even more cringe-worthy because of the talking cock that runs it. The Irish mob should have knocked his ass off when they had the shot.

I’m not really expecting any huge fights from this guy, I do however would like to see some good entertaining matches.
He is over the hill but I think he could get an upset due to his boxing skills.

There’s an Irish Mob?

Dana White left Boston because Whitey Bulger’s mob (the real life “Frank Costello” from the Departed) wanted money from him.
What is the significance of mma becoming more popular among whites? And given the growing number of minority participants in it I think it’s obvious that it is growing in popularity across all races and ethnic groups.

The significance is that I think alot of white guys hear all their buddies talking about MMA and assume that nobody watches boxing anymore, and the sport’s damn near dead.
But if you’re talking to a Cuban, a Mexican, a Filipino, or a black dude, or actually even an Englishmen, the odds are that they’re going to know boxing inside and out, and follow a couple fighters.
Hey, remember when this thread was about James Toney and his lovely B-cups and not the same exact “Boxing is dead, long-live MMA” thread that pops up every month or so?
If Toney wants to fight it’s his business. If he loses and mma fans say that proves mma is superior to boxing so what? I’m sure if Toney wins the boxing side will say it proves boxing is better.
I could care less about the whole “boxing vs. mma” argument. I want to see how his boxing style translates to the Octagon. But I will say that I don’t expect him to be in UFC for long…for various reasons. Most of which, have already been mentioned on this thread.
James Toney is not really a big puncher at heavyweight, because he is naturally a middleweight. Joe Rogan has talked about James Toney’s style, rolling with punches and boxing and countering on the inside not being the best style for MMA, and I’m going to have to agree, he would be really easy to take down.
I doubt Dana White is signing him to a five fight deal for him to be taken down 5 times and smashed. They are going to put him in there with someone who will stand up and trade blows with him.
On a different note, this is pretty funny MMA vs. Boxing video. I love both boxing and MMA. Actually, Joe Rogan mentions James Toney in this interview.
Was flipping channels a few hours ago and came across HDfightnet or something like that. It’s hosted by Bas Rutten and some random. The three guests were Ray Mercer, another boxer/MMA fighter who’s name I don’t remember and James Toney. Toney kept saying that he’s not a freakshow, that he’s here to stay and that he’s training hard, but he also said that as soon as someone shoots he’s gonna catch 'em with an uppercut or left hook. They interviewed Freddy Roach in a taped segment and he said he thought Mercer would have a better MMA career and has better one punch power and he felt the UFC signed Toney so he can lose and MMA fans can say that they’re superior to boxing. He also said Toney legitimately thinks he can beat everyone in the world, and that he might die in the ring 'cause he’s too proud to tap, but he WILL get taken down.
After the segment when Bas and the other guy asked what he thought, Toney said he’ll fight anyone, anytime. He named Ortiz, Lesnar and someone else. Mercer told him several times that if he connects with those little gloves it’s over, but he needs to watch out for leg kicks and takedowns. They also showed the Mercer/Sylvia highlights and he and Toney were laughing their asses off. Keep in mind during this replay that James Toney has taken a lot of punches to the head and is kinda hard to understand.
Yeah i caught that episode of MMA Live as well, KJ Noons was the 3rd fighter on the panel. Toney was definitely talking some major trash, think Anderson Silva was one he was calling out towards the end of the show if i understood him correctly he said thatâ??s one fight Anderson better not take. Think it was said on there that Ray was fighting again soon this time in King of the Cage and it would be on Hdnet as well, Noons will be returning to mma at the next Dream on the 22nd.
