I don’t quite get all the Wanderlei Silva “he’ll kill Chuck” hype…didn’t both Ortiz and Belfort knock Silva out? Pride obviously has more depth in their organization…but the top guys are all pretty similar talent-wise with the obvious exception at heavyweight. Clearly, Wanderlei is a tough fight for anyone…but Fedor he ain’t! Anyways, best of the season to everybody!

Whatever happened with the Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva fight???
Silva issued the challenge but the fight never happened because he got his ass kicked by Cro Cop. You can’t have a loser fighting a winner.
He got his ass kicked by a fighter from a heavier weight division. At least Silva had the balls to fight a world class striker. So, I don’t buy the UFC’s excuse that Silva getting knocked out was the reason the fight didn’t happen.
Basically, the UFC doesn’t want someone coming in for a title fight, possibly winning, then leaving. They wanted a 3 fight deal and Pride wanted a one off. Pride also wanted UFC to pay Silva for the fight which Dana didn’t dig. So it was money and politics.
iatguy wrote:
It was a money issue with Wanderlei. Pride pay more than UFC. I’m suprise they can afford Cro Cop, Rampage and Heath Herring.
UFC has more money than Pride now I would think. Pride isn’t even on TV in Japan anymore and the UFC is bringing down 600,000+ PPV buys. The tides are turning.
I am surprised it wasn’t stopped in the first round. Chuck was murdering him.
BTW, thanks for the link.
Don’t have time to read the whole thread. Just stopped in to say the fight was a joke. There wasn’t a single point throughout the fight where I began to think Tito might even have a fleeting chance.
He’s not even in the same class as Liddell. I was very disappointed as I wanted to see a good fight. I’m not a big MMA person, but this fight got me very interested for some reason, and it turned out to be a waste of my time.
Ref had to stop it b/c Liddell wasn’t going to stop throwing punches and sooner or later, Ortiz was going to get hurt and while he was blocking, he was in a near fetal position, and that never looks good in the eyes of the refs.
I give Ortiz credit, though. I thought he was done in the first round but he hung in there and actually fought back and won the second round. He’s definitely maturing and it’s good to see.
Jardine’s win was an upset but I can’t say I was overly surprised. He’s a good fighter and with him and Griffin and their styles, you knew someone was getting KO’d. Griffin will be back, though.
MacDonald is making a good name for himself in the MW division and Alves in the 170 class.
I thought in terms of action and match quality, this was top to bottom the best PPV of the year.
UFC 67 I don’t think will be that good. It’ll be nice seeing Rampage and Cro Cop, but they’re not fighting anyone dangerous to them and GSP-Serra is going to be over quick. I think Lutter has a chance against Silva if he can get it to the ground.
Hey if anyone out there is in contact with DeSouza, would you send me a PM?
Thanks…

It’s basically going to play out like Ultimate Knockouts 4. I agree with all your points too, good analysis.

Like I posted before the fight, “don’t believe all the hype put out by the UFC.” There was never a question in anyones mind who knows this game - Oritz never had a chance.
Again like I posted, “How do you beat someone when you can’t take them down and can’t out strike them?”
Okay…Tito fans…we know he’s a tough guy and made it out of the first round. And I think he deserves to be rated in the top 5 or so. But…he’s never beating Liddell…EVER.

I agree. I actually like Tito and was kinda hoping he’d pull off the upset. It’s gonna be a depressing New Year’s eve for him for sure… but then again, he does have Jenna to give him some sexual healing.
Zeppelin795 wrote:
Anyone on here think the ref stopped the Ortiz Liddell fight a little early? When Chuck was hitting him on the ground it looked as though only two punches got through. The rest just hit tito in the arm.
I thought it might of been a bit early, but it was justified. Ortiz wasn’t doing anything.
And besides, you can make a case that the ref was too slow when Ortiz was knocked down in the first and recovered.
DooMMOoD wrote:
Alright Chuck! I thought he would take that one and he did. You know there’s gonna be a Liddell/Ortiz 3 it’s only a matter of time. Goddamn I should have bought this one. Thanks for the thread man.
Liddell/Ortiz 3? It will sell, but it’s going to be like Ortiz/Shamrock 3.

Do not friggin read this unless you want to know what happened.
cruz has no beef the ref said fight snd cruz was just concentrating on andres leg and paid for it.
Here are the results so far:
Michael Bisping win by k.o. over Eric Schafer
Schafer dominated early on with a couple of good takedowns but Bisping was obviously a superior striker. Schafer basically wrestled himself out and once fatigued was easy target for Bisping’s kicks and punches. Like a shark smelling blood in the water, Bisping pretty much tore Schafer apart with a nasty shin kick to Schafer’s face and then finished him off with punches.
Andre Arlovski win by k.o. over Marcio Cruz
Some controversy here, the fight quickly went to the ground which looked to be to Cruz’s advantage. After an illegel kick to the face was delivered by Arlovski while both fighters were on their backs trying for simultaneus knee locks, the ref warned Arlovski and the second the ref stopped his warning, arlovski (while sitting on his butt) throws a nasty punch basically knocking out Cruz . Arlovski finished off Cruz with strikes from the top position.
Controversial because Cruz was obviously not ready after the seeminly prolonged warning by the ref. I couldn’t even tell that the ref was ready for them to fight again and I was watching it on t.v. I think Cruz has a legit beef with this one.
Jason Macdonald wins by choke out over Chris Leben
Leben seemed to be in control very early with some sharp strikes. But…Leben made a mistake once the fight went to the ground and Macdonald put on a nasty, nasty, nasty choke from the ground. It was a combo guard position/guillotine choke in which Leban basically taps out while in La La land. Very nasty and impressive choke out by Macdonald.
More updates comming.

Agreed. It likely had nothing to do with Silva’s loss to Crocop and everything to do with money and politics.
Crocop is from a higher weight class, but Silva actually weighed in heavier for their fight, so really no excuse there. He was beaten by a superior fighter.
The Arlovski fight was bullshit, and I am an Arlovski fan. I said to one of my buddies, "If he doesn’t stand them up now, Arlovski is going to knock the shit out of him when he starts them.
Hell, he was sitting there up on his elbows just waiting for it.
Stunned by Jardine’s performance.
Bummed Tito didn’t pull it off or at least do a little damage to Lidell.
Overall an underwhelming night of fights.
I’m not sure what you mean… I watched the same fight everyone else watched, and I didn’t pay a dime. It was at a bar. In any event, it was a boring fight. Lidell let him regain after dropping him in the first, floated through the second, and threw a half-assed flurry to win it in the 3rd. Not an entertaining fight. I think the Rampage rematch will be killer, with my edge going to Rampage.
It’s all about matchups. Ortiz beat Silva, Silva beat Rampage, Rampage beat Lidell, and Lidell beat Ortiz. Well, my girl’s on her way over so I gotta bounce.
Happy new years to everyone and ya’ll be safe.

Nope. It’s a cross-marketing problem. Notice last night that there was no mention of what organization Cro Cop fought in? It’s like the came from nowhere.
If Silva had beaten Liddel, more people would have learned about Pride. People would have Googled him, etc., and found out there’s an organization that’s as good (and in some divisions, better) than the UFC. This would be bad for the UFC.
If you were Dana White, woudl you let yoru flagship fighter bring attention to your chief competitior? Of course not.
Most UFC fans don’t even know what Pride is. Dana White wants to keep it that way.

Good post CLaw, I’m glad some people get it. Sakakibara is on ecord saying the fight wouldn’t happen because negotiations fell apart before the CroCop-Silva fight even happened.
Another factor to consider is that UFC and K-1 are on good terms. Mirko wanted to enter the K-1 WGP in 2005 and still desires to compete there, so UFC could make it happen. Also, Mirko knocking off Sylvia means the JLB-Sylvia fight could happen.
