Ufc 118

Yeah, yeah. Edgar-Penn 2 will be pretty fucking cool, but let’s jump to the real issue here: Couture vs James Toney.

God-fucking-damnit, is there anyway we can boycott this fight and stop it from happening?

man, that looks like a kickass card…Diaz-Davis, Maynard-Florian…

i think Penn will take the rematch, but i also never thought that he would’ve lost the belt, either.

as far as Toney-Couture…it doesn’t really matter. Couture’s old enough to be most UFC fighter’s dad, and Toney is prolly not at the top of his game anymore. i’ll admit i’m kinda curious, but at the same time, i’d prefer to not have more freakshow events.

Alright, I’ll bite. (And keep in mind, I am a horrible, horrible betting man.)

Couture takes it via either 1st round submission or 2nd round TKO.

There.

(Now bet against what I predicted, and chances are you’ll make some coin.)

Honestly I think Toney has a decent shot at KO’ing Couture. Randy has never really been a great “shooter”, and instead generally relies on trying to use striking and evasive head movement to close the distance and control the fight from his Greco clinch (which he is very good at).

Unfortunately for Randy, I don’t think that strategy is going to work out too well for him against a boxer of Toney’s caliber. Heck, all Toney has to do is watch Randy’s last two fights against Chuck, and he should have a pretty good blue print with which to KO Randy. Lots of lateral movement, keep your back off the cage, and catch him coming in.

Seriously Sento Randy can shoot watch some older fights of his. This is what will happen, “Lights Out” comes out in a boxing stance leg kick from randy who immediately throws a right hand follows it with a shot, Randy then moves to the full mount and ends it with a first round tko.

I don’t want it to happen because it’s bad for the sport either way. Toney wins, people justify it by saying Randy is just an old man, and boxers who hate MMA will start talking more shit.

Couture wins, Tapout wearing assholes get their vindication and start talking more shit.

And the sad truth is, I don’t think Toney has a hope in hell. Looking at that video, he’s out of shape, and his striking looks flat and not explosive.

Did Toney really need money that bad or will nobody fight him in boxing I’ve heard both.

I’ll be rooting for Toney (please don’t hate me) but Randy is going to fuck him. Have some faith in a master gameplanner.

What is with all the naysayers. I love a freakshow. It is what made the early days of UFC so exciting and interesting. The only way this could remotely be bad for UFC is if Randy is beaten like a red headed step child by a Toney who is too sadistic to just put him out of his misery and even that could have an appeal to some.

So is Couture vs. Toney going to be at a catchweight or will Toney be able to come in as heavy as he wants (a true heavy weight fight)?

It’s at HW

In the limited tape that I’ve seen of Toney it looks like he’s been sucking down Krispy Kremes like they’re going out of fashion.

Based on the fact that Couture is one of the smartest fighters around I really don’t see Toney having any realistic chance of winning. If Toney doesn’t land a knockout shot in the opening 60 seconds then his goose will be cooked. Toney now isn’t a fraction of the fighter that got beat by RJJ. I hope he gets a nice payday and never fights again - his speech is slow and slurred and he clearly has chronic traumatic brain injury - I’m not a doctor but sometimes you have to wonder about the sanctioning of bouts like this…I’m not saying that Toney will be seriously damaged as a result of this fight but his brain certainly doesn’t need any more shots.

I’m making the trip over the pond for this UFC (not for the above match though)…see you in Boston!

words in bold for emphasis

You are right, in his earlier days he did shoot more. But as he has gotten older, he has shot less and less and instead has begun to rely on closing the gap with strikes and head movement. Maybe he can still shoot, I guess we’ll have to wait and see. But if what he’s done since he lost the LHW title to Chuck is any indication of what he plans to do (or is capable of) in the Toney fight, I think he could be in some trouble.

I do agree that Randy would be smart to land some leg kicks on Toney though and get him thinking about that and slow down his footwork. Then once he has him thinking low (and maybe even gets him to raise the leg to check the kick) shoot (or even just cross arm jam) in to close the distance, clinch with him and then work his gameplan from there. He just has to be careful not to get caught with a punch as he throws those leg kicks (he’d be smart to watch the first Machida vs Shogun fight and watch how Shogun keeps his guard up when he leg kicks) or closes the distance, because Toney will put him to sleep if he connects.

hell im intrigued by couture-toney…but i think the ufc did this one wrong. they shouldve put jon jones in there. can you imagine the beating jones wouldve put on toney? in all likelihood randy should win the fight, but jones wouldve absolutely mauled toney and removed from all minds the concept of the boxer beign able to cross over to mma with little to no grappling training. and more importantly, wouldve skyrocketed jones’s already booming popularity. the matyushenko fight on ppv was solid, but absolutely killing toney in the ring wouldve done wonders for building jones’s image

Bones is fighting Forrest you know.

I just read Toney is walking around at 290 - not sure if that’s really true but his face and arms are looking really fat and I haven’t seen any pics or videos of him without a shirt on - I wonder if he’ll even be able to make 265.

and you missed my point

James may be fat but he’s not that fat. I expect Toney to weigh somewhere in the high 220s to low 230s.

No I didn’t, I’m just letting everyone know Jones is fighting Forrest; you missed my point.

To be honest I think he’s going to beat Forrest fairly easily. I know that MMA math never adds up; but he completely dismantled Bonner, who we know had a couple of all out wars with Forrest, neither being able to really dominate the other.

I realize that Forrest has improved since that time, but I really think that Jones is going to whoop him. Hopefully that will be the last green light the UFC needs to put him in a #1 contender or championship match.
