Tyson vs. Paul: Call It! 🄊

Totally suspect… Tyson wouldn’t let his hands go. But still my hero. Snake Paul will lose credibility for this and the Netflix meltdown though

I’ve never seen him fight before this, but based on what I saw, its hard to call him a legitimate boxer. Very hard.

I guess we’re living in different realities. While Jake Paul is no world class boxer, the current version of Mike Tyson is no match at all for him. Paul boxed Tyson like I would box my Dad - let him hang in there and didn’t try to hurt him. This was for show and no one wanted to see a senior citizen get hurt or even knocked down. Also, I do know boxing and spent years in boxing clubs and sparring matches; and while Tyson may had him figured out, his current condition gave him no chance of capitalizing on it. More like a basketball coach can figure out the offensive moves of a opponent’s top scorer, but he can’t actually get on the court and stop him.

Thats a fair statement.

Agree to disagree on the rest.

Tyson can still stop people with his hooks and overhand. He was suspiciously tentative

I love Tyson, and I’m no fan at all of Jake Paul. But both my own eyes and common sense tell me that a fit and trained 28 year old - even if only a good amateur and fringe pro - can beat a 58 year old no matter how badass that 58 year old was in 1988. Especially a 58 year old that has had decades of drug and alcohol abuse and has spent time being morbidly obese sense their heyday. This all takes a toll.

He looked focused too… I miss watching him destroy opponents. Glad I was there to witness it

I agree completely with @antiquity. I saw him sucking on his glove like a dazed 5-year-old, with his intention being not to abandon ship entirely. I’m no particular fan of Tyson, but I nearly cried, it was so hard to watch. Afterward I pulled up young Tyson/Holyfield. No relationship between young and old Tyson. I believe Paul could have destroyed him if he’d wanted.

I also think we have 58-year-old men posting here who could have done better.

Out of curiosity, have you competed (recreationally) in a combat sport? Or sparred with older competitors?

I’ve seen former D1 wrestlers in their mid-50s tear through roided up youngsters like a knife through butter. Granted, their flexibility and endurance are mostly gone, but I think you underestimate how little effort it takes to defeat a younger, stronger opponent if the skill difference is high enough.

Paul left glaring openings, and Tyson still looked faster than him in rd 1 despite the age difference. I could be embarrassingly wrong, but my sense was that he could have easily baited, ducked, and knocked Paul’s head off. Paul is a big, strong guy, but strong =/ punching power or chin.

You’re comparing two different sports. You are also comparing training in wrestling to an actual competitive match in boxing.

I have.

I completely disagree. If this were the case, Tyson would have done it. He would have nothing to lose by showing he still has it. He doesn’t.

I think this is closer to the truth. Tyson was out of shape and in no condition to take on a - even if we say good amateur/fringe pro - boxer in his 20’s.

Exactly. And that’s what everyone came hoping to see. Not to wonder ā€œwtf is he doing with his glove?ā€

Tyson is not a good 58.

Thankfully for the world of boxing, we were treated to Ramirez Vs Billam-Smith last night (Saturday night in the UK). Unfortunately, it was overlooked in favour of the farce that preceded it this weekend, but outside the heavyweight division there is some excellent boxing going on. The last 30 seconds of the twelfth round delivered more excitement than 16 minutes of Tyson Vs Paul.

Whole heartedly agree with the sentiment Tyson was there for the taking, no reflexes and awkward on his (braced up) legs. Looked gassed the longer the ā€œfightā€ went on. Paul may have left himself open and Tyson’s head will no doubt have recognised that, but his body couldn’t meet the demands…

Oh my goodness I am absolutely delighted at the micro-rebellion of enthusiastically agreeing with the notion that people don’t have to agree.
