I would first like to say thank you to everyone who has given me advice on here before, I have made some considerable gains in strength within the last four weeks.
One of my friends is currently starting a workout program. He has the very lanky/skinny look now but has a bit of a gut and drinks a TON of beer more then just the weekend. He went on Men’s Health and started the TNT diet.
This diet swears that you can lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. I learned through T-Nation that this is impossible due to the calorie requirements. I have made my case and it has fallen on deaf ears.
Is there any other advice I can give him because I want him to succeed because ever since try to get healthier he has cut back on drinking a lot and I feel like failure might cause him to go back to his old ways.
My friend is 6’1" 160 lbs.
Calorie Intake: 1800-2000 (depending on training day or not)
Workout: 3 days lifting 2 days cardio with up to 3-5 mile distances.
I can’t give any more specifics right now because I am not sure exactly what he does. Should I just let him continue? Thanks for the help.
He’s 6’1" 160, flabby. He flat out CAN!!! gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. That’s one of the great things about being a newbie. When your totally new to training, many of those rules don’t apply. He can make awesome strenght and muscle gains just by making no other change then stepping in the gym.
Id have him start simple dont get over whelmed with the perfect plan or diet, just make some small steps that he will, make habit and go from there. anything he does is MUCH better then nothing.
One thing he has to remember as well is he is going to need to make up all those calories he is no longer getting from beer somewhere. Eating that little for someone his height aint much add on starting to train and its not near enough
Anyone who says no one can gain muscle and lose fat at the same time is stupid.
Last year I dropped my bodyfat from 23% to 13% while my bodyweight stayed virtually the same (5 pound loss over 8 months).
I improved my lifting capacity by over 50%.
I definitely gained muscle and lost fat at the same time.
With all that being said, at 6’1 and 160 lbs the lad surely can not have much fat to lose. He just needs to eat right, stop drinking and exercise a bit and that gut will go away.
