Too good to be true?

okay, now I know there must be a downfall to diet soda, but what is it? For the last week I have been hooked on diet vanilla pepsi. like on or two every other day. I know there is caffeine in them, which isnt all that good for the system, and the artificial sweetener cant be that great, but what exactly can make them bad? Also since we may be on the subject of sugar, does any one use stevia extract? and how does it compare to splenda as far as raising insulin and calories? thanks as always all replys are appreciated.

I noticed the same when I had diet vanilla pepsi. I thought “not bad for a drink that’s diet.” As far as the ingredients used, It’s hard to tell.

Going to the stevia thing. I don’t really like it as an artificial sweetener. I’ve had protein powders that used stevia as their main sweetener and I wasn’t too impressed with the taste. Low Carb grow definately beats the other low carb protein powders when it comes to taste. I’m convinced that sucralose is the best sweetener. For the past three days, I used splenda in my coffee and it tasted great. But when I switched to putting sugar in my coffee, I thought it was the nastiest thing I ever had. I’m never going to use sugar, ever.

I tend to bloat a tad bit with diet soda. Never used stevia, and I don’t think splenda has an impact on insulin or blood sugar levels.

I would stick with what works, splenda does. Get some DIET RITE, you’ll avoid the bad sweetener (aspertame), and caffeine.

I get some Diet Rite, add a tiny drop of mint or peppermint extract, and you have a whole new experience with Diet pop. I tend to throw some peppermint schnapps, or creme de cocoa too, haha.

I use Stevia Liquid…no carbs. You have to get a good brand though because taste can vary quite a bit.
I use Wisdom of the Ancients or NOW brand. The packets will have malto as a filler as other AS do.

It really depends on what you are using the AS for as to which is better.

Diet soda in moderation isn’t really bad but if someone uses it in place of pure water then it is a problem.

I am not a big fan of Aspartame, but that Diet Pepsi Vanilla is really really good!

Stevia is a ketogenic choice when it comes to “non sugar” sweeteners. Can’t really call it artificial since it comes from a plant.

As such, it doesnt negatively impact your insulin response. It’s very strong in flavor also, which does tend to mess it up for use in certain items. Tends to be concentrated a lot also, making it difficult to use in baking.

With that said, I like it in certain things. Works great in homemade chocolate truffles for example. Decent in ice creams also. Sucks the weenie though in cakes or cookies. Works in cheesecake…

Until sucralose came out, stevia was really one of the few choices a person had if they wanted to stay “natural”.

Sucralose of course works rather well cause it’s sugar, just modified in some fashion to stay bound together better or something non impactive.
I recall buying it “bootleg” from canada and so on before it was usa legal.
It wasnt cheap but neither was stevia and for ketogenic type diets it was a godsend.

Caffeine dilutes the effectiveness of creatine.

Beyond that, I wouldn’t worry.

cola contains phosphoric acid which damages your bones, lowers your minerla deposits and is detrimental to overhealth (is used in toilet cleaners)

dont know about vanila though.

hey friends, thanks for the replys, well I guess with the pepsi issue we can come to the agreement that it like many things is okay in moderation. As far as the stevia goes, I love it over my oats, and in my coffee other than that I dont use it on anything else. thanks again for the replys.J

Dude, I’m a diet Dr. Pepper whore.

I do find, though, that if I’m stalled out on weight loss for some reason, if I cut the Diet Sodas, things often pick back up.

Water is good for you, I guess, and getting rid of artificial sweeteners, salt, carbonation, etc. can’t be bad.

On the other hand, if I’m not having problems… GAME ON.

Glute-

I believe the bone-weakening thing has been pretty soundly refuted once they did studies accounting for people’s tendency to replace milk with soda. The weakened bones were coming more from calcium deficiency than anything else.

I’m pretty much a Diet Coke whore myself. Nothing else tastes as good as that. Diet Vanilla Coke blows though. I want to try Diet Vanilla Pepsi because I keep hearing how great it is.

Hooked is not one or two every other day. Hooked is 10 to 20 everyday, from sun up to sun down.

  1. Stevia: sweetleaf brand is pure powdered stevia. Works great in oatmeal (only thing I’ve tried) and doesn’t have the funny taste of the liquid.

  2. RE: phosphoric acid: Berardi had an article recently which talked about the acid base balance of the body and how many of us are too acid. Phosphoric acid obviously contributes to mkaing your body more acid.

Just tried the Diet Vanilla Pepsi today. Yummy. However, it doesn’t beat the undisputed king of diet sodas (in my mind anyway) Diet Mountain Dew Code Red. Yes, it has a ridiculous name, but holy crap, its yummy. Give it a shot fellow aspartame junkies!

I consume Diet drinks on a semi-regular basis under the assumption that it’s basically harmless. I wouldn’t use it too often though, just in case.

I use stevia as my only sweetener (with minor exceptions) because it’s the most probably the safest sweetener out there. It’s the only sweetener that can be considered ‘healthy’. I believe it contains trace minerals and helps with cavities or something of that nature.

The original creatine studies used hot tea as a liquid for creatine because it was easy to dissolve. They had no problems. I drink tons of diet drinks and the last time i took creatine after a big layoff of creatine, i gained 5 lbs. I dont think caffeine does anything to hurt creatine’s effectiveness.

I heard somewhere that aspartame causes cancer…?

Everything causes cancer if you stuff enough of it into a rat.

wow lots of feedback. Yes for any one who hasnt tried stevia I suggest it, it is thicker than most sweeteners and great over oats, now here is a Q I pose for you sugar junkies, how many of you have put artificial sweetener over say your broccoli? I had been doing this for a while to give my p-f meals a little more zest, but I cut it out, as I would rather be safe than sorry. J

Speaking of sugar junkies has anyone managed to cut out all sweetening altogether? I usually don’t get too many cravings from using fake sugars but I do get some. Is it possible to overcome all sugar cravings with time as some people claim? Seems like a pipe dream, but if it’s possible, it’d be worth the initial discomfort…
