Diet Coke and Pepsi Okay

I know that regular sodas like dr. pepper and pepsi are bad for you and not in our diet plans. But for soda lovers, can we at least afford Diet sodas? They don’t have any calories or carbs. I’m sure there’s a reason why we still can’t, but can someone enlighten me please.

Check out some of the information on Aspartame and decide for yourself. There’s still much debate. I generally don’t touch it, but then again I drink and shower in filtered water, so I’m probably a bit fucked up according to most people in regard to watching my toxin intake.

Aspartame may or may not be bad for you. Sucralose is generally believed to be safe. You’d be better off drinking water, but what the fuck, you only live once so you might as well get some enjoyment from it. It’s not going to hurt you if you’re a bodybuilder or athlete as long as you’re consuming it in normal amounts.

I believe that soda’s, including the diet versions, are carbonated and therefore contain CO2, a waste product, which negatively affects your health.

I try to stay away from anything with Aspartame in it. It is showing up in a lot of food products as well as colas.
I base this only on what I’ve read over the years and nothing else. Diet Rite Cola has a fair taste and has no caffine or aspertame etc…
I’ve also switched to flavored water (some have aspertame) and have found Aquafina tastes o.k. and uses splenda instead.

Drink water. If you need the caffine drink tea or coffee.

I think the aspertame fears are overblown but at the same time it isn’t exactly health food.

How?

Aspartame is composed of two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine, as the methyl ester. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Aspartic acid and phenylalanine are also found naturally in protein containing foods, including meats, grains and dairy products.

Methyl esters are also found naturally in many foods, such as fruits and vegetables and their juices.

Aspartame is approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar, tastes like sugar, can enhance fruit flavors, saves calories and does not contribute to tooth decay. Products sweetened with aspartame can be useful as part of a healthful diet.

Seems alright to me? lol

um… is that why aspartame was analyzed by the Pentagon less than a few decades ago to be utilized as a biochemical weapon?

I’ve heard that diet coke can lead to cravings (your body thinks that it’s ingesting something sweet). I don’t think the aspartame is gonna kill you or leech your bones. All else being equal and the rest of your program doesn’t change, go for it.

Would the acidity have a deleterious effect on muscle growth? I know JB is big on vegetables to counter the acidity of our diet… or am beyond the pale on this subject?

Off topic from the OP, but my mother has MS.

She was recently diagnosed (less than a year ago) and well, prior to this she had 6 Diet Cokes a day. Im not putting on the tin hat here, but there are studies, and there are controversies. If i touch a diet soda, its made with splenda. It hit close to home, so im going to stay away from it.

Secondly, if the diet soda is 0 cals, 0 sugar, and 0 carbs, isn’t that just plain water almost?

Don’t ever drink diet soda instead of water. But I think that you can have some to lessen the blandness of a clean diet. When I’m eating clean day after day, like I am now, I’ll drink a glass of water or two while I’m cooking and then drink a glass of Diet Coke while I eat dinner.

That way I know the DC didn’t interfere with my gettng the water I need after training.

I love how everyone is so careful to tip-toe around and not make a defnintive statement. DON’T DRINK THE SHIT! Water is all you need, it will save money and there are no studies that are unclear whether or not it is a good thing to drink. Aspartame or no Aspartame pop is not a good thing to drink if you are interested in health.

Have a read here. The Ecologist did a very comprehensive article about Aspartame last year & after reading it I won’t ever touch the stuff.
A client of mine was recently diagnosed with MS & I banned her from drinking her normal 2 litres of diet coke a day. Her symptoms cleared up within a week. One of the many illnesses mimicked by Aspartame toxicity is MS!

cola only has a 0.4 mEq acid excess for a 100 grams.

I hear Saddam had tons of it.

A while ago, I read an article about a study of use of aspartame through 14 years. And they found a quite clear connection of increased probobillity of cancer with longterm use (Sorry, I don’t remember where I read so, I you’ll have to take my word for it).

Buuut all diet coke is with splenda these days anyway. Atleast here in norway. Although you could always say “but where are the longterm studies of splenda???”, it seemes generally believed to be safe.

I drink some diet soda/flavored water, but only if I’m already very well hydrated. And I drink far more green tea than diet soda. Plus I brush my teeth right afterwards to be safe.

I’ve drank very little the previous years, quite content with enjoying fruit. But I’m halfway into The Get Shredded Diet, and other than the few odd grapes or strawberries I’ll eat with a meal, which is technically cheating, I’m not allowed anything sweet. I gotta have some diet soda.

Greens+ doesn’t count as sweet either.

You guys are overthinking this quite a bit. If you are really against aspartane, there are quite a few options that do not contain it.

Also- taking showings in filtered water only is a bit OCD for me. I try not to obsess about every little thing. You’ll just end up causing ungodly amounts of stress which is considerably harder on your body than the worse diet imaginable.
