Toe Trauma - Losing a Nail Question

I dropped a 40 lb weight on my toe this afternoon (from the bottom portion of the rack).

It fell right on the joint of the big toe just below the nail. I can move my toe, just not all the way. It has already started to turn black though.

Anyway, my question is will I potentially lose the nail, or since the weight didn’t fall on the actual nail, will it stay put? Is there anything I can do to help avoid the loss of the nail?

I tried to do a web search and didn’t find out much.

thanks

Depends. Watch it for the next couple days.

In every case where I’ve lost a finger/toe nail the entire area below the nail turned black, and it took a week or two before the nail fell off. If the nail is destined to fall off then that is what will happen, nothing you can do about it. Good news is they grow back, and in a month or two you wont even know you had lost the nail.

Depending on the swelling it could get a bit uncomfortable, as in seriously throbbing pain. My remedy was taking a needle used for leather crafting, heat it up until it was red hot, then puncture the nail, and let the blood flow out. That relieved the pressure and the constant throbbing.
