@unicornsandrainbows Hey Unicorn, I was wondering if you dabbled in estimating a bit.

These past couple of weeks I have been working with the Lead Estimator, he’s a cool dude and used to be a chef. He’ll jokingly make comments on what I eat sometimes.

So far in these past couple of weeks, we have submitted three proposals. I calculate the material, finishes, and hardware, and he steps away from his bigger jobs to help me with labor, delivery pricing, contract stuff, and pretty much finagling our spreadsheet so we can make a profit.

I don’t mind coming back here after this summer, cause I do have the option, but I’m really determined to find a good MEP sub.
Why learn from the GC when I can learn from the expert, I’ll get a more thorough and detailed understanding of that particular scope.

Either one of those will do, but personally Electrical sticks out to me just cause the experience is huge when it comes to data centers. I can say the same about HVAC too.

What sucks is that I don’t see a whole lot of MEP subs hiring. I will keep looking though, the opportunities are out there, but I swear subs have terrible marketing compared to general contractors.

Dabbled is the correct term here. I did service estimating for about a year at one of my previous HVAC companies. Rooftop change outs, blower motor and compressor replacements, etc. Not near to the scope of work you are talking about, or even what I deal with now.

When I started at the current place I work, a plumbing and hvac contractor, they had me spend one week with the estimation team for learning. That was honestly one of my favorite weeks at this company. I mostly shadowed the dry side estimator. Really gave me me a good insight into how these projects are scoped, and where the money goes.

Now working on the project team, we refer back to the original estimate constantly. How much budget we have for subs, equipment, if something was in our scope, estimated productivity, just to list a few.

Long answer short, yes I have dabbled. Very glad I did. Spending time as an estimator teaches you things you will use as a PM.

Also, not that you asked. Coming from someone who has a habit of “grass is greener” I would absolutely go for an electrical contractor. Hvac as a backup. Plumbing will never be on my list again.

The Lead Estimator, told me he was very impressed with my takeoffs and how I’ve been able to identify our scope items on structural drawings and architectural drawings.

Then he started asking me about when I graduate, and he said he would hire me as a junior estimator and train me. Similar conversation with the project executive, but being he said being hired as a project engineer.

I mentioned the idea of being hired in the fall. That will be a conversation in the next 2 weeks or so.

That really made my day, I swear if I get hired during the fall, I’m gonna be making REALLY good bread cause that’s gonna involve a salary (in theory).

I applied to an estimating internship at a large general contractor (competitor of one i’m interning with this summer). They got back to me within a day after applying, so the little foot in the door phone interview is on Monday.

I’m just hoping this doesn’t turn into a “We are only looking for summer interns”. That was a nuisance when searching for the one I have this spring.

All the other roles either say “co-op program” or “summer internship”, this one specifically says “pre-construction estimating intern” and doesn’t specify the summer. If I’m lucky, this is one of those random opportunities suited for people with experience rather than a last minute summer intern application, I hope it is.
