What’s this? A chinup contest? I’m in!

alexus, I actually hate planks. I think my trainer just got sick and tired of me whining about them and realized I’ll do a plank until I expire if it means beating his ass.
Kristoph, I am happy to provide entertainment.
Snapper, we are evil twins, separated at birth.
Spider, you are the chinup/pullup queen! If you tried to beat my number doing one-handed chins, that would be the only way to make that a fair fight. ![]()
With any luck, I will be turning in my project this AM, my weekend project got canceled and I’m looking forward to the first non-working weekend in awhile. Things are looking up!
Don’t these people know you have training to do?

They don’t know and if they did, they wouldn’t give a crap.
But I am this close to freedom!
This weekend will likely be the first “cafe-bike ride” of the season. Its where the husband and I ride our oldest tandem bicycle, the one that if it gets stolen oh well, into town. Then we lock up the bicycle and eat at a new-to-us restaurant, and then ride back home. This is pretty much what we do on vacation, so we finally realized that we can do the same exact thing around here. Fun times!
Sounds like a good way to spend the weekend.
Spring is finally going to make an appearance here in the northeast this weekend, definitely need to spend some time outdoors!
ManfromMass, after all that wretched snow its time for the spring-party. Have a great weekend!
I SO want to start my couch to 5K today. But I’m feeling run down and tired, and I’ll be lucky to have a good training session tonight if I conserve what little energy I have left. So I’m sitting on my ass instead, looking longingly out the window… Time to catch up on the logs.
Aww you and your hubby have a lot of fun together.
I’m glad that you can take a vacation tradition home with you.
posting of epic meal between bike rides is a must.
Hai Kimba ![]()
Enjoy your rest tonight and your bike ride tomorrow–sounds like a fun weekend!
yeah the bike ride sounds like a wonderful idea. glad you get to have some kimba-time.
i was kinda hoping i might learn to love planks like kimba. now i guess i’m just gonna have to learn to love a little competition like kimba.
one of the super strong dudes at the gym (compared to me) does planks with 15kg. i asked him today how long he did them for (since i can do 15kg for 60 seconds). he said ‘60 seconds’. hmm… i’ll work up to 20kg then challenge him to a ‘how much weight can you do for 60 seconds’ plank off. or i could build it back to 90 seconds since i really don’t seem to struggle until after the first minute… and if i train them with 15kg or 20kg for 90 seconds and challenge him to a longest hold then i should surely kick his ass.
Nikki, having fun doing stuff with your SO is the key to a lasting relationship. In my opinion, anyways.
Frenchy, we are on the search for the perfect hamburger. That is this year’s challenge! And perfect chicken and waffles, perfect hot dogs…you get the picture. The beautiful thing about cafe rides is that by the time we ride home, we’ve burned off lunch.
Nadia, so far I am just so darn excited to have a day off its pathetic.
alexus, if you are the sort of person (and I think you are!) who gets riled up at the thought of a challenge, then definitely do this! Competition really gets one’s mind off the plank-hating.
Last night’s training suffered a bit from a lack of energy, but there were still good points.
Sumo deadlift
from floor:
95# 1 x 5
115# 1 x 5
135# 1 x 3
155# 1 x 3
I was happy with this. I haven’t pulled 155# off the floor in awhile due to all the rack pulling lately. What I noticed based upon conversation in other logs was that I tend to let my shoulders drift over the bar which makes it hard for me to “pull back”. I’ve been setting up further from the bar, and that first rep is better. But then I put the bar down close to me and the subsequent reps aren’t fixed. I guess I could set up between each rep to fix this.
Rack Pulls (2 risers)
175# 1 x 2 <–these went up slow and hard.
And here I hit the wall. I just didn’t have any energy left to make this happen, so I moved on.
Bench (5’s week)
Bar 1 x 5
63# 1 x 5
72.5# 1 x 5
82# 1 x 5 <–last 2 reps butt off bench
BBB 65# 5 x 10 <–will add 2 lbs. next time
I was happy with this considering my low energy state.
Low cable row (2 hands)
70 1 x 10
70 plus one plate 2 x 10
Machine flyes
60 3 x 10
Good girl/bad girl
65# 1 x 10
I had to wait forever for this machine, and then some dude wanted in (lots of dudes on this machine, really?) so I gave it up.
Triceps v-bar pushdown
drop sets
80# 1 x 10
70# 1 x 10
60# 1 x 10
This training fueled by a delicious pastrami sandwich on dark rye with mustard and swiss cheese for lunch. My reward for turning in my project.
Today I ran the Couch to 5K, Week One, Workout One (1 min walk/1.5 min run x 8). Not a cardio challenge in the least. But it was a pretty sunny morning, the bike path provided much people-watching entertainment and I’m mindful that staying in the game is the game, just like Nadia says. I was thankful just to be out there. My knee feels OK now. Hopefully tomorrow it will be good too.
Why do so many guys do the good girl/bad girl? Ha!
Glad to hear that you’re doing better pulling from the floor. At least you got the first rep figured out, getting the following reps will come next.
And moving up the poundage for the BBB. Color me impressed =)
pastrami on dark rye sounds delish!
and good job on those sumos ![]()
Congrats on turning in your project!! Oh, how I envy you. That pastrami on rye was well deserved, that’s for sure.
Great training! Esp considering the work stress and achey bits. I love, “staying in the game, is the game” I need to remember this myself.
And let’s not forget, part of reaching a goal includes learning movement patterns, acclimating the body - so eventhough the running wasn’t a “challenge” it’s all part of getting prepared for the challenge ahead. Did you do anything for the knee afterwards? Ice it, or something like that?
Hilarious re: the good/bad girl machine! A man who takes care of his buns - I can get behind that. Hi-o! (i feel like i’ve made this joke before, I’m officially turning into my mom)
Hooray for bike rides! The search for the perfect insert delicious food is a brilliant plan!
Glad to hear that your knee feels OK. That’s awesome. Means that couch to 5K will be a success!
Also nice that you and the hub got out on your tandem. Tandems are so cool. The ride to lunch thing sounds fun. Hurray for spring!
Working on the weekend sucks. I did account auditing/paperwork every weekend for the better part of 2 years. Finally gave it up last fall. I don’t even know how I managed to do it. Weekend down-time is good for you.
There was practically a riot at my gym when they did a refit and failed to replace the GG/BG machine. I’ve not done any of these for about three years as a result. I was so close to being able to good girl the stack, too. I think it’s important to let a guy know that you can break his ribs between your thighs. It puts them in their place.
^ love how you made that sound Cal ![]()
Nikki and Frenchy, thanks for always dropping so much positivity in this log!
Maschy, you are probably right about movement patterns and acclimation of the body to new activities. I’m impatient, so I want to skip these steps. But since my body isn’t letting me, I have to yield. I do stretch after running, but icing it hasn’t ever helped me so I stopped.
veggie, thanks! I am so hoping that C25K will be slow enough to defeat the knee issues. The program calls for 3 runs per week. I’m going to try it as written. So far I’ve noted that lifting plus running on the same day is a knee no-no. Cycling plus running on the same day has so far worked OK. Everything might yet fit!
Cal, you’ve just given me a new goal: to good-girl the stack and scare all the boyz! Thanks for the hysterics this thought just put me in.
Yesterday was the first cafe bike ride of the season. Rode for a bit over an hour, ate a truly delicious cheeseburger with crispy fries. Then rode another 20 min. to the second perfect-hamburger candidate. Split that burger with hubby (the first one was better) and had a high alcohol Belgian-style dubbel of which I could drink about one-third. Then rode an hour and a half home. Lovely sunny warm day and good times.
Today’s training was impacted by very tired legs. I was supposed to do squats, and I did (sort of).
Military Presses (3s week)
45# 1 x 3
50.5# 1 x 3
57# 1 x 4 <–money set, was happy with this.
BBB 33# 5 x 10
supersetted with
Bulgarian split squats
BW 5 x 10 each leg
This superset got me sweating. I set up a bench next to the heavy bag and used that for balance. I made up for the BW BSSs by doing a ton of them. Hello burning quads!
Overhead squats
28# short bar 2 x 10, 1 x 4 <—overbalanced the bar, too tired.
Here is the second set. I see that I lose my arch at the bottom. What can I do to fix this? What else is wrong with this?
Kroc Rows
40# 2 x 10
Cable pull-throughs
67.5 2 x 10
supersetted with
Seated front and sides
7.5# 2 x 10
Cable hip adduction/abduction
2.5# 3 x 10 each leg
This is a physical therapy exercise for glute strength that I’ve been slacking on. After lil power’s comment that my knee cave issue is likely a glute weakness issue, I thought it prudent to get back on this team.
Hanging leg raises
10/5
These still really suck
V-ups with swiss ball
1 x 10
Swiss ball hamstring curls
2 x 10
The last couple of things was just killing time until hubby was done.
The rest of today is a knee rest day. Perhaps a nice fish dinner to balance out all the hamburgers I ate yesterday.
Ha in my gym class I good girled the stack (weak machine must be) and all the huge 6 foot guys were like “Daaamnn”
Yes, I can say from experience that it does instill some fear in 'em
OH squats look good, I have no idea about the arch question though. Is it possible to look up when OH squatting? I mean, I know it’s possible, but can it be done safely? I love looking up when doing squats, keeps my form impeccable, including the arch.
Your krocs are strong woman, awesome workout.
Anything supersetted with Bulgarians is going to be a sweat-fest.
I find that a perfectly acceptable loss of arch. what you’re doing? breaking with your knees first instead of pushing your hips back. push em back as tho you like it, woman!! ![]()
cal- if you’re breaking his ribs with your thighs, he’s not in the right place. ![]()
