Throwing tomorrow, my 12 year old daughter is going to have her first hammer throwing session. I don’t know who’s more excited.[/quote]

I love when my kids ask to learn about things that make me ‘tick’. Great feeling to pass things on.

Nice lifting!

Dumb question time Carl…and why this never occurred before I have no idea…

when you do C & J 90/3, is that one clean and three jerks , or three clean and jerks.

how did the hammer go, who had more fun ??

( saw Sedykhs daughter placed top five in the soviet winter throws, and she is coached by his first wife, the sprinter who won the 1980 OG 100m…)

Thanks SteelyD. I’ve been encouraging and waiting for this for years.

Terry, 3 clean and jerks. They are one of the most dreaded parts of my workouts.

My daughter now has an official pr of 53 feet with the 2kg hammer. She worked up to some 1 turn throws and on a couple of them had some pretty good positions and timing. 15 throws altogether, at which point she said she was hot and sweaty, went to the truck for some water, and spent the rest of the session playing in some mud.

I threw hammer also, ~25 throws. We were in Bakersfied visiting my mom, so we got to throw at Cal State Bakersfied with a real hammer ring and cage. My timing and balance apparently stayed back in Las Vegas, best throws were not quite 140 feet, some were less than 100. I’m usually much more consistent. I’m pretty sure she had more fun.

I’m dead.

I’m very glad she wants to. Her little brother (7 years old right now) will probably be joining us soon. One of her older brothers throws shot, discus, and javelin, her other older brother smokes a lot of weed and drinks too much. I’ll consider it a success if he gets sober by the time he’s 25, anything athletic would be a tremendous bonus.

Cleans: 60/3, 75/3, 90/3, (95/3)4
Jerks: 60/3, 75/3, 90/3, (95/3)4
Clean Dead Lifts: (120/5)5
Step Up With Jump Thingies: (BW+10lbs/6)5

Postponed or even canceled the front squats and push presses, due mostly to time constraints, but also due to iffy shoulders. I’m only half dead today.

I think I was sober at 27ish.
post college silliness.

I am then only athlete in the family- every one else was super good at school go figure.

Carl that is a full house, glad the bullkof the kids are interested.
nice training too.

The oldest one doesn’t live with us, he tried college and dropped out, but the second oldest (throwing older brother) brought a friend home with him. So now we have three kids, three cats, two dogs, and a Jack.

Carl your note on shoulders, reminded me that I have found that if I jerk or push press the day after heavy weight, they are rather tender ( back of shoulder).

Took some advice and shelved pressing movements (jerks as well) when I embarked on my throw the heavy weight, 16m quest three years ago, so had not been an issue until now.

Interesting thing was I power jerked 85kgs with virtually no dip in drive or catch, when I started Ol 5 weeks ago.

Think the puds have been keeping my shoulder strength up.

I enjoy them a lot more than jerks, and my wrists seem to agree with me…

Careful - feed a stray and they become yours…

Yeah, I know how that works. That’s how we got one of the cats and one of the dogs. But they were both a lot cuter than the Jack.

Last set of snatches was perfect.

I guess the perfect snatches make up for a
“jack”

perfect snatches probably left a smile on your face.

Yes, the Jack is easier to tolerate if other things are going well. My wife and I are both softies and Jack hasn’t had much going for him in his 19 years on this planet. We are hoping some good role models might help. Now to find the role models.

Terry, my daughter made me check on cost of flights to oz–they are much less than I expected. Now I am seriously considering going to the world games in October. First I have to run it past my wife. Where are you located? Would you be in Sydney during the games for any reason?

Carl, tell me what flight you are on and I will pick you up…

seriously…I am in Sydney about 20 klms from Homebush where the T & F and weightlifting will be held…

This is our 2000 olympics site (Homebush) and although many things have been altered there is still a dedicated OLY weightlifting facilty and they will be using the 2000 OG warmup tracks, still world class, seats around 15K.

I would offer you a room but you may get better value ( location wise not money wise) in either the city or Parramatta, Homebush is on the same railway line as both pretty well in the middle) .

Parra has good circles, and where I have started to Ol train is next to the railway line at Burwood, so you would be good there.
(Burwood is on the same railway line between Homebush and the City)

Definitley good for the pickup, maps, show you round, etc. feed you, show you the shopping system, public transport etc.

oh yeah Opera House and Harbour cruise…obligatory when you visit here…

Where we are there is very limited public transport and our road system is not quite as user friendly as the LA grid.

I will probably be off all week of the comp. I actually got back into serious competing (if you call masters serious that is) in Jan 2005 with the goal of competing in this meet ( Discus) I thought that if such a big show comes to my town, I would feel a little sad sitting on the sidelines. Gone way past my goals and keep setting new ones. Next being to qualify for the weightlifting and my state is pushing me. My first crack at it is 2 May, first Ol comp in 35 years!!!

Man I would love to see you compete…

this coming from someone in the O/55s…

Well, due to a simple question from Terry and the insistence of my daughter, it seems likely we will be in Sydney in October. I ran the idea past my wife and her response was “fuck yeah”. Her language could make even MY students cringe sometimes. The tentative plan is to enter both weightlifting and shot, both where on a good day I have a reasonable chance of winning. The schedule is not set in either event, so I don’t know if I would be able to pull this off. Being in oz would be great, I have always wanted a dijerido. Ihave and play a small one, but I want one of the big suckers that you can hold in your feet.

Terry, how long have you been throwing discus? I thought it was weight and hammer as far as throwing goes. What are your plans for the May 2nd contest? Throwing a lifting with yiou would be a blast.

Carl there is a link for the 2008 Aust Nat results below. You will see that your biggest issue with us is dealing with your jet lag.

At the last World Masters in OZ dominant international visitors numbered only about one or two per throw event and South Africans popped up a fair bit. So you look good for Shot, hammer, discus, weight and throw pentathalon…Lifting will be different as the Europeans should turn up but the fact they drop the qualifiers 10% indicates that numbered may be down.

The issue to be resolved will be the time table clash of throws and lifting, I am seeing Luke the meet director for the OL next weekend (we did not hit it off when we first met, so hope this will be better )- he has been supportive of my challenge so far, and he may give me an indication of the proposed time schedule.

I am guessing I will be comandered for the lifting at times, so that may put a dent in my time, but hopefully leave me with lots of free time.

I threw discus in high school with no great result, second at school think I threw around 80 ’ with a 2kg and a little more with 1.5kg. Did not think of lifting in this, as a few years ago my knees were real bad, (long storey, very long but think someone young overtraining the Ol with lots of bouncing making up for lack of quad strength). thought I would throw discus hoped for 30m (better than school) and try for top 6, and make the final at the World masters games. Thought that would be great. Woke up the morning after my first workout, coached by my son (who I had coached through his school years) and could barely walk, knees I had expected but my ankles were so sore…

anyway got third in my state master 8 weeks later, lucked at at my Nationals 4 weeks after that when due to many reasons I was best on Day. At a meet in between I stood and watched as two of my better competitors did a ankle and groin. throw by throw I stood there thinking “I don’t believe this …I could place”… only goes to show if you never compete you can never win… lot of kids on this site should realise this…

afterwoods I stopped discus (quit while ahead) and took up weight…I had met Peter Farmer in 1976 again long storey…

I joined up my state OL asson, about a month ago, never considered doing the lifting at the worlds as the qualifier was 170kg and I did not think I could get around a 100kg jerk, and if I did I knew it would come at the expense of my weight so was just going to knock off a week snatch record (62kgs…) and try and get some vibe from the training with the kids to shock start my drive to the worlds…

they lowered the qualifier, I discussed this with Luke and he said (“lift next comp”) so I need 157. my bests are 65kg, have done 60x5 with straps but I have been using crap bars and have not hooked in 35 years so grip is an issue) and a 90 power clean and power jerk that looked a little too much like a push press, so could have judging issues. So need a better grip, some luck with the judges and a few more kilos…but not bad for a month of serious training) if I miss I may have to travel interstate for my next go…all part of the fun…

Think I will be the only Australian doing throws and Ol…so it now is my main goal, to double up rather than break my weight PB…

How many of the Darby clan do you think will be coming, will send a private email.

My son is currently "fixing " our home PC so my computer access may be limited till Monday.

"Have a great weekend ", and pass on my thanks to your wife…

Clean and Jerk: 60/3, 75/3, 90/3, (95/3)4
Front Squats: (102.5/5)4

I only made it to the weight room today by telling myself I could stop after the Clean and Jerks if I had to. Managed to force myself through some front squats too. As usual on days like this, the weights were not heavy, but they sure kicked my ass. Clean form was a bit off, but got better from set to set. Jerks were pretty good.

Terry, It would be 4 of us, me, the wife, and the two younger kids.

Does “fixing” the computer have anthing to do with jaunty jackalope?
