Snatch: 55/2, 66/2, 77/2, 89/1, 94/0, 94/1, 100/0, 100/1, 102.5/0, 102.5/0, 102.5/1, 105/1

Snatch High Pull: (105/3)4
Split Squats: (70lbs/6)4
Still missed a lot of the snatches, but the last two felt great.
Sorry Carl, I’m not buying it! You dam sure do know what your doing, and it looks great. Someone else used the word “smooth” I think. When I read all the coaching points between you and other Oly lifters, my mind starts to cramp. But watching it, it seems like you put them together into a few moves.
In my mind at least, that’s one meaning of Smooth. Walk up, grip it, lift and drop, then walk away…You guys make it look easy, when I know it’s not. Keep pushing it, and good luck coming up.
Carl are the snatches coming forward again after the catch.
The C & J was nice.
I wish the horde posting the U tube videos of front squats would watch your recovery. Probably save their wrists.

Snatch: 55/2, 66/2, 77/2, 84/1, 90/1, (95/1)4
Squats: (116/3)6
Bench: 50/5, 62/5, (72/5)3
Snatch High Pull: (110/3)3
Time: ~50 min.
I missed four attempts in the snatch at 95. Didn’t have a very strong pull today. Good thing is I remembered something one of the lifters told me at the meet, how I’m pulling the bar off my thighs too soon.
Tried waiting a fraction of a second longer on the last two attempts with the result that I lost one snatch behind me (very rare) and got the last without the usual forward placement.
Sounds like you are not finishing the first pull on your heavier attempts. We have a few lifters in our gym that have the same problem. You have to really focus on fully finishing the first pull and get the knees back out of the way before starting the second pull. In other words, you’re rushing into the second pull. Good luck. I compete in the TX state meet next Sat, then start prep for the Masters Nationals myself.

Carl,
The above advice is right on. I had the same problem a few years back. I have always been very strong off the floor. I may be off base, but judging by the videos that I’ve seen of your lifts you seem comparatively strong off the floor as well. What I did to overcome the same technical flaw that you’ve described (i.e. going for the second pull too soon, when not fully extended, etc.) was to slow down the first pull. That enabled me to concentrate on and more easily identify the feel of the proper position to begin my second pull AND it forced me to fully explode on the second pull (which I thought I HAD been doing, but there was more there). My intent was to speed things up as the position became ingrained. In actuality I never did speed it up again. Being strong off the floor I eventually took an attitude that the lift did not even begin until the second pull began. When I exploded into that second pull I found the bar shooting up while my body moved more quickly under the bar. I soon had to overcome another issue: Over-pull, losing lifts behind me, which I’d never done to that point. In any event, this coaching tip allowed me to go from 105kg to 112 in a few months and eventually on up to 125 (in a meet) and 132 in the gym. Good luck and I enjoy your log. You move great for an over 50 lifter!
ProwlCat, and all the others that have made comments on my technique: thank you very much for taking the time to think about what I might be doing wrong in my lifts. Your comments are accurate and helpful.
I try to implement your suggestions as best I can. Some time this week I came to the same conclusion as you, ProwlCat, suggested: I need to slow down the first pull and hit better positions for the second pull. The last two snatches from Thursday were the result. Welcome to the board.
Last two snatches 102.5 and 105. For a change, I had to take a step back recovering from the 105.
carl u r a beast. im impressed every time i log in. keep kicking ass.
Carl, know your pretty focused on the OLing right now but have you got any T&F meets line up for the coming season. A few are slowly starting to show up down my way.

Yeah, I sometimes growl at my students when they get too obnoxious. It usually makes them laugh, but they also usually quit their obnoxious behavior. Thanks.

Hel, at this point the first meet I plan on is in June. If something close comes up between now and then I’ll consider it. Right now I wouldn’t be able to throw very far. All my throwing lately has been as slow as possible, trying to work on balance and positions. I’m hoping you will do some meets soon and let me feed my addiction vicariously.

That’s it!!! Especially the second rep with 105 where you stepped back. This means you are catching the weight on your heels where you are strongest to stand up with the weight. Great job implementing our suggestions!!! Good luck and hopefully we’ll see you at Nationals!! ![]()

Great lift, Carl. Strong all the way.
Thanks for the comments.
I did something stupid while throwing yesterday. Even though I knew my hammer wire had a tendency to unwind itself, I forgot to check it before my last throw. It apparently had come unwound and pasing 0 degrees (back to the sector, ball right in front of me for the non-throwers out there) it pulled lose altogether. The ball went flying to the left and all of a sudden, the 400lb force of the ball was 0lbs.
Because of the rotation, this tends to spin you around and throw you rather forcefully face down into the ground, pointing the opposite direction that the ball took off in. (If I missed, would I have been flying?) I got my hands up in time to save my face, but my left knee and right hand took a beating. The palm is bruised pretty badly and the wrist feels kinda funky. I’ll find out today if it can stand up to snatches and the like.

When Physics Fights Back - A Special Report.
Take care of the hand, Carl.
Glad you weren’t hurt any worse. If the wrist/hand/knee hurts at all with the first set today I’d take the day totally off if I were you.
Thank you for your concern. I was able to do the workout today, it seems the bruise on the palm was the worst of it, the wrist is a little inflexible, can only get it back about 45 degrees instead of well past 90 as usual. The overhead lifts were painful, but it didn’t feel like anything would get injured worse by doing them.

Snatch: 55/2, 66/2, 77/2, 85/1, 90/1, (95/1)4 there were two misses with the 95 mixed in there, mostly due to the compromised wrist position.
Squats: (116/2)6
Bench: 60/3, 70/3, (80/3)3
Snatch High Pulls: (95/3)3
Never spun fast enough with the hammer to havemuch problem. Have got my feet in the wrong position and took a couple of spills though. Glad you weren’t hurt any worse.
Owwwww, know how you feel
last year was throwing 10kgs on short wire around 24" in total when on second turn at around 345 degs the wire snapped, wound up face down before I knew it, wondering how I got there, before the owwww set in. Funny how even when you are moving faster than you are thinking your hands come up to your face. Because on my position it was my knee, only bruised, but quite painful for a while.
Have had wires snap again since but when the ball lands not during the turn, will keep fingers crossed.
Was at a seminar at our natuonal throwers convention on bio mechanics when one our of institutes of sport gave a speach about how the javelin was a weapon and the other things were because mankind liked to throw things. Had to set him straight afterwards, they are all weapons of war, even the shot.
Yep throwing hammer is dangerous …to everyone
Once when I was first trying 3 turn throws, I got so far out of position the hammer ended up throwing me, about three feet out the front of the ring. The hammer hit the middle of the ring and rolled out. Too bad it didn’t stay in. It might have been the farthest hammer throw ever.
I always treat my hammer very roughly on the way back to the ring after a throw, jerking it from place to place. My hope is that if the wire is close to breaking, it will break while I’m jerking it around and not during my turns.
The wrist is much better today. Its still sore and not entirely flexible, but I didn’t notice anything when I did the clean and jerks today. The normal pain of a clean and jerk was enough for me to not notice the writs.
