This Thing We Do

Screw Al Gore. Global warming my ass. This is Alabama and the high temperature yesterday was 20(f)! Think we’ve got some kinda state law about closing the state down at 30. Got to the gym work and changed clothes in the sauna.

Thanks JimmyT. Me and the squats have us a real love/hate relationship going. Guess it comes with age but it’s fustrating as hell when you max a weight and and remember when you use to warm up with it.
Last night after the great thaw

HAHAHA I think the global warming is a myth to big guy. We have the same damn state closure law here in NC! Now we are getting mandates and cold weather alerts from our insurance carriers!

Damn good chest session you had, hel!

Bench, cleans, deads and squats all looking strong. I need to work on my cleans at some point.

Eco, I do the cleans mainly for my throwing. Not sure how much they bring to powerlifting.

Off to the vets home to cook breakfast than over to mom’s house for supper. Jagger schnitzel is on the menu. Full day of eating planned. Off tomorrow, federal holiday, so plan on hitting the gym real early. Will need to after today.

Great workout and enjoy the family time. Sounds like a lot of fun!

4 wheels will fall soon.

Its just cool to clean heavy stuff. I guess it may help with increasing bar speed off the floor with deads.

Waddled out of bed to the gym this morning.

Wife and I went shopping for new cell phones. She’s always text messaging one of the relatives so she got one with the little flip out key pads. My new one does all kinds of wonderful stuff. Think it might even make phone calls. Got a nifty area to keep my schedule in. Filled it right up.

  1. Go to work
  2. Go to gym
    Repeat above.
    Off days, skip number 1.
Might have forgot to do one of those. Thank goodness for technology.

Yep those squats are really looking strong hel. Gettin’ kinda chilly down there? I’ve gotta post up some pics of what we’re dealing with to warm you up.

Just like it does every 4 or 8 years another peaceful change of our head of state has occurred. God bless and good luck to our new CINC.
In a few weeks I’ll be headed to Washington DC for a quick day. We’ve what’s called the Honor Flight here. The city raises money to send surviving WWII veterans to see the WWII Memorial. Start early in the morning, fly to DC, do the tour, fly back. Bunch of us young guys, in this group I am, go along as escorts. Truly a good thing.

Another very cold (for Alabama, DZ) day yesterday. Got off work and headed straight to the whirlpool at the post gym. That cured all kinds of aches and pains. Definitely thinking about getting one for out on the deck.
So, what’s this whole post saying. No lifting yesterday.

I watched the inauguration yesterday via the web. I never really watched one of these, but this was really history in the making. Then I realized only 44 people have led our country and the transition of power have all been peaceful That is quite a feat. It’s funny how the things we take for granted are so complicated but remarkably transparent and simple. Then I realized I could have watched the whole thing on my phone!

We truly live in a blessed place. Big H, it looks like you added a couple dimes to your squat, yes? Nicely done!

Looking for recommendations. Haven’t worn a lifting belt in years. Back doesn’t bother me without it but I figure it may be prudent to start using one as I try an up the weights. BTD I had a regular thin one I wore backwards when I squated. Suggestions on best ones for squats and deadlift? Qt gave me some suggestions on knee wraps so I’ll probably give those a try, too.

last workout you posted - you are a piece of work…nice cleans, followed by equally impressive presses.
Good luck with the belt dilemma…I do not use one in the DL’s but I definately use when the weight gets heavy for me in the squat. In training I do not wear it as tight as I would when peaking for a contest or at the contest as it increases my pressure.

So as a rule I just add it whenever I get in the 300’s or heavier…I do not think it detracts from the workout but enhances it, even if it’s only psychologically. I notice I stay tighter/more erect & my lower back seems to take more reps to fatigue than w/o it.

Either way, I hope it is a positive addition to your workout…it will be interesting to note your objective/subjective views of its use over time. My best to you & yours,
Art

I second QT, use it in the 300s. I did box squats today at 205 and didn’t use a belt.

I think I heard on EliteFTS that you shouldnt put your belt on til youre at 70% of 1RM. That works for me…
OL

I remember the belt doing the same for me as Art. Forced me to stay more erect.
Last night.

tri pushdown (elbows out)givin em a try.
100,150,stack, whatever it isx8. Note on these. Ended up leaning over the bar like an inverted bench. Started to feel it in the delts, too. Not sure if this is a good thing or not.

Today
Squat
135wu x 2,225x6,275x5,295x3,315x2,335x1,345x1,1,1
405-just took it off the rack to get use to the weight (an attempt, fleetingly, crossed my mind and then common sense, for once, kicked in.)
zercher
145x8x3
Leg ext
135 x 8 x 4
hammer curls
45x8x4
Not much volume but trying to get use to handling the heavy weights. Really sucks when you bench more than you squat.
May have to do some of my lifting without thumbs for a while. Went to the doctor today. My left thumb has developed a pronounced bulge which has started to affect it’s movement. Turns out I have “severe” bone spurs in it. Feb 10 they’re going to go in and cut them out. Thumb will be wrapped up for at least a week. I’ll find work arounds.

The bone spurs are a pain in the south end. Mine are getting worse, we’ll compare this summer in Bama. Have a great weekend.

No idea where this post will show up. Everytime I open my thread I come to this posting screen.
Friday night wined and dined the wife for her birthday. Great time, lots of family. Ok, I’m a sentimental sob. Everytime I look at the woman I think how lucky I am.

Saturday, sauna and swimming.
