Hel, been thinking about you, I feel like you’re my kindred spirit minus about 38 neuroses and personal problems. For starters, Al Oerter died last Novermber and I didnt even know it until tonight’s ESPY’s. I read in Wikipedia he threw one during filming in practice of 245! The best ever.
But more importantly is your recent post of some confusion about where you want to put your considerable talents into the strength game.
You'll do what makes most sense to you and what gets your motor running the most i would suspect, but i can't help but offer my opinion.
It doesnt look good for me having the time or opportunity to set Masters or Seniors OL records. If you can get your jerks up, you could. I set records in the shot and discus in college, but when I set high school and beyond records in OL it was alot more exciting and motivating for me.
I would get a kick out of helping convince a friend to set a record I want (Master's C&J record of 308), or if by some miracle my life falls in place and i can train hard, to meet you in person at the national meet and COMPETE with you for that record.
It would mean alot more than 5 pullups.

Yeah but shouldn’t do it with kids less than half my age.
This morning:
Squat:
135x8
185x8x2
205x8x2
Assisted Pullups
6 sets different hand positions
Dips
3x8 BW
Tricep Ext (rope)
80,90,100,110x10
River swim[/quote]
Keep hammering away and watch that squat get bigg!!!Nice work.
I’m developing a real love/hate relationship with the squat, Jimmy. Not sure but I think I got under the bar just a little easier this last time. Only groaned once.
Doc, I guess we fix a picture of our childhood idols in our minds and it’s really shocking when we realize they were human and aged just like everone else. Last year when both Al and Perry O’brien died it really hit me.
My problem with the weights is I seem to have ADT when it comes lifting. I truly love lifting and I’m like the proverbial kid in the candy shop when I go to a gym. But I’m easily distracted. I’ll commit myself to one routine, find out I’m weak in something, or see something new, and I’m off on that path for a while. I need to buckle down on th OLs and really work the form. Would definitely be great to actually meet you at a meet.
Yesterday, 102 with a heat index of 110. Got home said screw it. That lasted about 2 hours, drank some coffee, headed for the gym. Went with a nice easy work out.
Power cleans
135wu
185x2repsx8sets
Really working on squatting under the bar. Big flexibility issues here.
Power cleans
135x2x8sets (same as above)
hammer curls
45x8x4
abs

I’ll volunteer to carry y’alls gym bags. I would buy a ticket to see that meet!
HEL-- Great post in T-Alpha ![]()
Thanks Jw and Steely
Been following the drama going on over in T-Cell Alpha. I’ll stay here where it’s quieter. Not to get real mushy but I think we as a whole got it pretty well figured out in here. Don’t know about the “elite” part but we’ve got most the bases covered.
We’ve got the Beginners,BBs, powerlifters, strength sports, dieters, couple of you guys do the combat sports thing, and with Yo Mama’s occassional inputs and Capacity joining in we even got a little of the muscle sorority. Got Get a Life covered and training logs galore. Just our own little microcosm of the whole site right here without the bullshit. Ok, virtual group hug.
Another day over 100. Fried tonight. Off tomorrow so plan on hitting the gym at about 400am. night all.
DOwnloaded it. Good stuff, Hel. Thanks.

That was a good post. Those fellas can use a good example of reasoned discussion. I think you gave 'em one.
Think you’re the only one got to download it Skid. The link was deleted. Wondered why til I went back and looked at it again. I was only interested in the articles and didn’t consider the fact it advertised a competitors products all through it. My bad mods.
This morning
Bench
135,185wu*,225x12x4
Hammer Incline
90wu,180x12,200x10,220x10,240x10
Hammer chest/dip machine (first time, like the feel of these)
90x10,140x10x3
Flyes (straight arm)
30x10x4
CGB
135x10,185x10,225x8x3
I put an asterisk on my bench warmup as lead in:
Guess everyone has their own way of warming up. First thing I do when benching is lower 135 to my chest and just leave it lay there til I feel stretched out a little. This morning I’m just getting started, laying there, eyes closed, stretching the pecs, when I feel someone grab the bar. Eyes pop open and there’s this guy standing there. He goes “now push”. I push, rack and get up. “Get me if you need another spot” he says and heads back over to his workout. “Thanks, I will”. Always good to have a lifesaver around.

That was very kind of you to allow him to think he saved you, LoL. I’ve had fellas come rushing over during paused benching, too. Very distracting, though their hearts are in the right place.
Hel, thats funny. Have a great week.

Now I wonder what the lifesaver thought when you finished out 4 sets of 225?
Tonight I…
Hell, it’d be boring after the other threads tonight. Yawl have a good one.
Hey,
Another helluva post on T-Alpha big guy. You sure offered a perspective they need over there!

I couldn’t agree with you more! It does seem a bit over-dramatic over there right now.
LOL! Truth be told, this place does have a nice mix of people. I just couldn’t find any other place where I wanted to chime in. None of the ladies forums did it for me and the Combat Forum … well, I dunno. It irked me to get jumped (by someone half my age) just for stating my opinion once. Maybe it’s an age thing, but the folks here are serious about their goals yet a lot more laid back about life in general. And less apt to go for the jugular. That’s nice when you see what goes on at the other forums.
Heck, I may even get around to posting a log of my own at some point!
Cappy
Thanks Cappy, real glad you joined us.
Early this morning:
Squat:
135x8
185x8
225x6x3
(3 fingers from each hand on the bar! I felt damn near flexible. These are having the added effect of helping me loosen up my shoulders. New screen name will be gumby!)
Calve Raises
115 x Max x 4
Assisted Pullups
6 sets different hand positions
Cable curls (rope)
50,60,70,80 x Max
Once, I was happy. It was just me and the weights. They’d greet me, talk to me, and urge me on. “We’ve waited for you, lift us.” We’d do mad, uninhibited, guilt free lifting and all was good in the world. Then, I bit the apple. I started reading this forum. Other ways to lift, different routines?
My old favorites called to me, “Don’t listen, we’re all you need!” But the door was opened. I began questioning, doubting, and finally it came, “I think we need a little time apart”. I moved on to other lifts. I hear the bench snicker as I do bodyweight only exercises. My pecs derided me “you left me for that muscle?” You always think, “I can control this. I don’t really need it.” I started small like most.
A sit up here, a twist there. Then I found myself needing more. “I’ll just added a few crunches, nothing more.” I find myself wandering in places I’d never frequent before. The Articles. I research other sites to satisfy my need. Finally, the lowest point. I caught myself reading nutritional labels. When will this madness end?
Got to cut down on the coffee. You all have a good weekend.

Where do I get some of that coffee?!? It damn sure can’t be Folgers.
Ah. A self-proclaimed Chronic Routine Changer. (CRCer) If it makes you feel any better you’re in good company. Oh, I don’t mean me. I have FOC (watch it!). Fear Of Change: the polar opposite of CRC, or better known as a lifter who hates to deviate from their favorite routine!
Neither affliction is good, but keeping a public log helps, as does making a pre-determined timeline for your current routine. Decide how long you want a cycle to run, announce it, and if you start to veer off course we get to dope-slap you around a bit. It’s a win-win situation: good for you, fun for us!
Start small … maybe 16 weeks or so, and work up from there. I’d suggest that when the cycle ends you just make a few small changes. Swap a variation or two, add or detract a few minor things, and commit for another 16 weeks, give or take.
The only time you should alter your routine mid-cycle is if injury threatens or if a movement just turns out to be a horrible fit. Read all you want, gather information, but when the time comes to tweak your routine sit down, study your log (something most people never bother to do), and see if you can make some substitutions using the guidelines above.
Truth be told, the more you read the more you’ll realize that a lot of the “new” stuff is just a rehash of the same old thing. Lifting ain’t rocket science … though plenty of folks would like you to think so. (Cha-ching) ;

Glad to see the shoulders are getting more freedom of movement. Have you tried 90 second doorway stretches? Big benchers often have a super tight pec minor (so I read, anyway) that benefits from stretching the shoulder with the hand above the head while the forearm rests against the doorjam. Seems to rotate the shoulder out and backwards.
My arm goes numb after 60 seconds but it’s restored some range of movement in my right shoulder on squats setup(1st set is always the stretcher set).
