This Thing We Do

Okay so I’m cocky now. Pullups. Haven’t done these since back in the day. I can bent row some heavy weight so no problem with the lats. Right. 1…2! Grip must be too narrow. 1…flutter kick…1 1/2,…strain… 1 3/4…stretch chin…

  1. Pullup prowess seems to have gone the way of my youth. Don’t know if I really need these But it was an eye opener. Played around with all the chest and arm machines and cable thingys but didn’t find any I couldn’t live without.

Actually looked at some of the thigh machines which brought Susanne Summers to mind and said naw. Overall just a fun morning. Except for those damn pullups. Ego might bring me back to those.
Hey, Hel, I finally can beat you at something, I can do THREE non-stop pull-ups. Hah. Now its on, I’ll race you to 5. Doc

Still just wedgin myself in an squatin. Shoulder still feels the same. I’m only getting the index and middle finger from each hand on the bar. .
Have you tried an 8’ bar? I had a similar issue, and had pretty much stopped squatting as it was hurting my shoulders (I bench competitively). I picked up an s-3 from Ironmind and am happily hitting it hard again. The six extra inches between the collars is remarkable.

Those damn pull ups are humbling as hell! At least you dont need the assist like some of us wanna-be, would have been, should have beens do! Good job and it looks like you had real fun with that.

Thanks W.E.C., have never tried one of those. See if I can sweet talk the gym into getting one.
The fun is just beginning JW. Figure I can use the back yard swing to practice them if I hold my legs ups. Nothing but the latest in training equipment for me.

Shit…I’m not tall enough to lift and carry mine…

Doc, if you’re reading this I may need some help here. See, there’s this woman. She’s had to move about 18 times since she married this guy, twice cause her house and all she owned was destroyed. She’s been flown to hospitals 5 times because her husband was severly injured and then took care of him for months after. She’s raised 2 great sons while her husband was gone to parts unknown half the time. She still puts up with his crazy ideas of regaining his lost youth. Think she may have a mental problem because as of today she’s stayed with this guy for 28 years. Ya’ll have a good day, too.

Happy Anniversary to you and your (very patient) wife, Hel

Hel,

Happy Anniversary to you and your wife. I don’t know y’all from Adam’s housecat, but I would like to thank the both of you for your personal sacrifice in the service of our country.

Hope y’all have a large time celebrating 28 years!

Hel,

Congratulations to your entire family. Your committment to our country and each other is an inspiration to us all.

Good to see that the shoulder is holding up. I will be watching for your next squat session.

You’re a stud, Hel. May the Lord bless you and the little woman.

That’s a very nice tribute to your wife, Hel. I’m sure she would say it’s been worth every minute of it!

Congrats!

Cappy

Delivering mail this afternoon and it’s a summer day in the south. Hot, humid, cicadas are in full roar, and ain’t nothing movin fast. If you’ve ever lived in the south you know the type of day. I’m going from house to house when I see a group of about 6 or 7 kids walkin down the road, ball bats slung over their shoulders, gloves hung on the bats, drinking sodas and headed for a vacant field. Maybe some of you don’t remember pre-computer, cable TV, video game summer vacations when you made your own fun everyday but for me it brought back all kinds of memories. Made my day.

Great workout hel. Your bench numbers are awesome.

I grew up in those days as well. In our area after the vacant field ball game we played cowboys and Indians among the growing corn, chased the dogs thru the soybean field at the edge of a wide brown water river, and spent the afternoon eating popsicles and picking the cockleburs out of our clothes.

After a day of trying to figure out why I do what I do for a living, your post made my evening! Thanks for the memory

Happy 28th hel! That yard work looks like fun.

That bench press is awesome!!!

I loved the sawhorse overhead walks! I may try that i liked yours so much! Have been quiet last couple of weeks; hope you and yours are well.

Guess I’ve just gotten used to sharing with you all but I thought I’d post the following. Wrote it for some other web sites. Sorry if it’s inappropriate for here but I feel the need.

A man died the other day. We laid him to rest today. The honor guard, myself, and few guys from the Vets home. They gave me the Flag and an old box full of his medals because there was no one else.

He remembered the 6th grade but went to the fields after that. Like many he enlisted after Pearl Harbor and found his home. Spend his 21 birthday in a German POW camp. Spend another birthday drinking soup from his piss pot in a “cold ass tent somewheres in Korea”. Spend his last birthday in the military on his second tour of Vietnam. He remembered parades when he came home from WWII and being spit on coming home from Vietnam.

Was he a good man? I don’t know. He told lots of stories of barfights, whores, gambling, and jails he’d been in. He’d been married at least twice he could remember but those didn’t last. Only thing he was ever good at was the military. Never did much with himself after that. Odd jobs here and there. Lived mainly off his retirement. Cheated when we played cards and still drank when he could get hold of it. He did like my pancakes, though.

We won’t find his kind in the military anymore. The political correctness of our time has changed that. His kind of GI pretty much went the way of the dinosaur.

When I opened the box there were Silver Stars, Bronze Stars, Purple Hearts, and some I didn’t recognize. He was old and used up when he died. His best years had been gladly given to his country. Today we laid a hero to rest and I just thought others should know. I’ll miss him.

Back to the gym and my normal happy self tomorrow morning.

Hey, don't work too hard on those pulldowns now, you could break a rib or something. Doc

Thanks for telling his story.

The military consumes some people, and we owe a kindness to the husks that are left.
