This Thing We Do

Great work, Hel!!!

Thanks everyone. QT, This meet was just for the state of Alabama. Next ones are all regional. In my age group, American record holder in the shot (past NCAA champ)is from Tennesse and Georgia has two past “real” Olympian throwers near the world record in the discus.

Georgia also has a guy who won the Nationals last year in the shot in the age group under mine and he just moved up to the 50-54 group. Not my event but Florida has the world record holder in the javelin. My goals for the up coming meets will be to just get into the medals and set PRs. Got to be he food down here.

An aside story. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes… Got to work out with the shot put record holder from Tennessee last year. Same age as me ,53, doesn’t bench at all. Weights around 265 and maybe 6’1".

Seated behind the neck press. Worked up to singles of 275#.
Squats: 4 sets of 8 with 515#
Then we drank lots of beer. I held my own there.

HAHA yes its the food. Hogs from the waller, chickens from the coop, bass from the swamp, and cows in the back hollar…(can you tell I was raised in the RURAL South?)

Damn, 275# mil presses and 515# squats. I could never imagine that strength.

BTW, Great vids. That was pretty cool

Way to go!!! Awesome.

Way to bring it Home!

Had to get back to the gym last night.

Will be throwing again this afternoon. After analyzing my vids I saw several things I’m doing real wrong. Primarily I ain’t moving fast enough. I was too worried about fouling. After my first throws to get one in that counts I should be going balls to the walls and I didn’t.

I’ve got a big problem with not actively using my left arm. It’s just going along for the ride. Goin have to have a talk with it at practice.

Congratulations on the meet results, Hel! My toys arrived yesterdays from UPS (shot, discus, hammer and turbo practice javelin), so I was like a kid at Christmas last evening at a local throwing field. They keep the track locked up after school hours, so I’m trying to find another place to practice the jumps.

Then I need to find a used pole vaulting pole on eBay or from a local HS and I’ll be all set. Hope to see ya soon at one of the upcoming Southeast meets.

Hey BB, as an old hammer thrower you’re probably one of the few who will understand this. Usually throw with the 3 turn as I don’t practice enough to have got the 4 turn down. Main problem is I’m always tryin to muscle it out, pull my arms in, which don’t work. Since I hadn’t trained it much for this meet I only did 2 turns, relaxed as hell, arms straight out and it just took off. After my first throw my next ones sucked cause I thought about it too much and tried to muscle it again. Sometimes less is more.

You must be pretty damn good to get even two good turns in. Getting three turns in takes a lot of skill, IMO. I’m fumbling now with just one turn, though I haven’t thrown in about 40 years, so I’m hoping to at least smooth that out soon. I have the same problem with trying to muscle it out. As you say, you really need to stay relaxed, keep your arms out for a wider radius and accelerate on each turn, heel-to-toe.

The best hammer thrower I ever saw was the guy who taught me to throw in college: Tom Gage, still one of the all time best, throwing over 200 ft in the 65-69 age group. Last time I saw him throw was around 1965 and, as I recall, he was a three-turner - it was like poetry in motion. After all these years, I can only imagine how refined his technique must be.

Name dropper. Gage holds all the age records. Just keeps setting them as he gets older. Think he’s got the weight pentathalon ones, too.

Did some hammer practice again tonight and managed to get a few good throws from 2 turns - actually works out better than one, since I can go nice and easy on the first turn to get in a good position to accelerate on the second one without fouling.

However, prospects are not very good for finding a place for the jumps - was able to get into two local HS tracks but, since the schools close early in FL for the summer, they’re already dismantling and taking out the landing mats. I hate it when that happens!

Great meet Hel. I hate these moves on the site. Have to spend twice as much time catching up on everyone.

Hel’ of a good job!!! I’ve been kinda hit and miss on checking out everyones threads… and with the ‘crusade’ happening, it’s been even harder.
So far I’ve been ignored (as I should be, nothing to see here, let’s just keep moving along…). LOL!!
Anyhow, again… Way to go! (a few days late).

Had fun and brought home the bacon. Way to go Hel320, the sweet smell of success! Well don’t let your swell up to much, there’s going to be a few guy’s out there training hard to rain on your parade. Now we all know winning isn’t everything but it sure is sweet, great work Bro and keep it up!

Wednesday did some throwing at around 80% level. Trying to work on my form.

Bad weather yesterday. Should clear up enough to get some throwing in ths weekend.

Well, let me be the last one to chime in and tell ya awsome job hel320! Cool vids too chief, and that photo of the plate of crawdads made me REALLY hungry.

“Nutin lie de mudbug ma’ you goo’ an strong”
Thamks DZ. My next meet is next week so my lifting schedule is mainly when I can’t throw. You guys have really got me thinking about getting into some kind of lifting meets after the season.

All Right!! I agree with DZ the crawfish look good! We still have some in season up here, I may have to call the B.I.L. and get his recipe.

Man, your workouts are pretty doggone impressive! Where is the next meet?

Suck some heads for me bro. Haven’t seen a good mound of mudbugs since I left Houston. A great weekend to ya.

Next meet is in Birmingham, Southeastern Masters. The really big boys are showin up for this one. We’re using the facilities at Hoover High School. Great facilities, I’ve got a couple more meets there. On a side note. They did a whole TV show on these kids football team.

Couldn’t go 2 Friday nights in a row without hittin the gym. My triumphal return to the crew was greated with cheers of adoration.
“How’d you do in the walker race?”
“Place in the 5 yard drool?”
“Hook up with any hot 80 year olds?” (She was only 75!)
It’s truly hard to stay humble, sometimes.
