This Thing We Do

For those of you who missed it today was our(US Postal Service)annual food collection to stock food pantries nation wide. Seemed like a good haul this year. We’ll get the total count in a couple of days. I had to unload my truck 3 times. On a walking route those cans get damn heavy. No matter, really good cause and the pantry use is at an all time high. Naw, this ain’t a paid political advertisement. Counting this as my workout for the day.

0700-heavy shot/15 standing throws - back yard. Rained hard last night, big holes

Mother’s Day so I took the mrs to the Krystal drive thru. Even let her supersize. I do spoil the woman.
Actually, big meal at mamas house. Only about 35 family members showed up.
Hope everyone had a good weekend.

I’ll bet your back yard is hell to mow! or with all the holes you don’t need to mow at all…

Damn, I don’t know 35 people, much less 35 family members. I bet that was a lot of good eating. I can only imagine the spread!

Good workout hel, I bet you will be right for the next meet.

Got a couple of acres and I’m restricted to the farthest corner of the property.
Last count:

-I’ve got 5 big brothers here, they’ve got 17 kids between them. Most of them kids are married and have kids

-4 Uncles and 3 Aunts which gives me 20 something cousins plus the kids they’ve had and the kids the kids have had

  • my wife’s sister lives here with her 3 girls, 2 who are married and have kids
Amazing thing is my mother can name everyone in the family, including my 2nd and 3rd cousins. First thing kids in my family do when asking someone on a date is make sure their not related (no southern jokes, please)

Like I say, Family is everything.

No southern jokes from me!! You can count on that. I guess we kind of evolved into a small southern family; which is kind of odd, since my great grandparents had about 6 kids each!

I’m envious

Wow, family that size is like having your own personal fan club. I’m always envious of people with huge tight families. There’s just something real special about that.

Workouts are looking awesome helo. How many meets do you get to in a season. I guess the more there are the easier it is to stay focused. Finish one and start training for the next. Well the way you train you rule out the need for luck. So I’ll just say give’r hell bro!

Wow, that’s some family! And to have them all close by is a true blessing (hope you limit gift exchanges on holidays for your budget though).

Streamline, Right now I’ve got 4 more meets for sure with maybe 2 more I can make. Also got 2 Highland games I’m trying to fit in. Keeps me off the streets and out of trouble.

Really heavy day but I’ve got a meet this weekend so need to train. Considered not working out but it’s suppose to be crappy weather the rest of the week. So I threw after work. Good Practice, shot and disc, some speed work. Came home and took a shower and ate some of the wife stir fry. Ever get just dog tired? Not sleepy but like you don’t even want to move? That’s me right now. Gonna hit the bed, catch some news, and get some sleep. Gym tomorrow morning, new day.

Good luck tomorrow. I know that feeling of just being tired. Your right about being a new day.

Woke up feeling great and hit the gym at 0400. Probably last heavy day before the meet this weekend. Still want to get one more day throwing in. If the weather doesn’t permit I’ll probably lift again Thursday.
Deadlift
135,225,315wu,375x6,405x3x3
Power snatch
135x8,145x6,155x4x3
Bent Rows
135,185wu,225x8x3
Hack squat machine
90,180,wu,270x10x3
Hyperextension
3 set time max
Heavy shot presses 18#,30x4 sets (probably more physcological than physical. Try to make the normal shot feel lighter.)

Nice work. Good luck on the meet.

One more aside, at what point do you decise to move up a weight in an excerise?

Hell if I know.
Let me explain that a bit.
During my competitive season I don’t move up at all. Most of what I’m lifting now is “speed work”. I don’t lift anything slow during this period so in some cases I’m lowering the weight or using poundage relatively light that I can move relatively fast.

Off season.
Unlike a lot, most of, you I don’t really have a well thought out plan (heresy). I know what body parts I’m going to do on certain days and about what weights I’m going for and how many times but that’s about the extend of it. I don’t know the difference in one gurus lifting routine from another. The ones I’ve read are pretty much warmed over other theories IMO. I go to the gym knowing I’m gonna do,say, bench and tris. I know what I did last time.

If it was easy, I use more weight. I like to lift heavy stuff. I really, really enjoy it. I’m just not into making plans and over thinking it. Sorry for the long reply but I guess that’s the answer. When the last weight I lifted wasn’t hard enough. Hope this makes sense.

You make perfect sense! In fact your way is the way I have used since 1979. Including the hiatus.

Thanks for the reply.

hel320,
Bro I just turned 43 and I have been wanting to compete in our annual Estes Park Highland games here in colorado. I have gotten all types of training advice and the like. My biggest obstacle is training for the caber toss and the hammer. The rest I’m cool with. Any suggestions. I have some crazy @$$ training implements in my garage I can’t wait to get my hands on in the next month.

Back and legs. Coordination between the two. Practice the flip for the caber and resist the urge to throw it straight out from you as hard as you can. Remember the goal is to flip it. Dumbell axe swings work great and deadlifting is a must. Lot of guys love doing zerker squats, too.

Hammer, same thing on the weights. Practice lots of around the head wind ups til the movement feels natural. Keep your arms staight on the downswing. Don’t bend them. Your natural inclination will be to pull them in and try to muscle the hammer. Momentum and the distance away from your body will make it go a lot farther than you can muscle it. Practice slow lazy throws and gradually speed up.
Hope this helps some. Anymore questions let me know.

Got home from work and got in some heavy throws in the middle off a thunderstorm. Long as I was wet I drove to the pool and got in a few leisurely laps to loosen up. That’s it until Saturday.

Good luck Saturday. Can’t wait for the “report”

It’s the waiting that kills you. The down time between physical training and competition is usually occupied with some mental training. Do you have any rituals that use to keep your mind sharp?

Have a great time Helo320.
