Think You Are Big But Just Fat

Or, “holding weight well.”

Exactly. I know that myself, and several others who seem more in touch with how actual science affects bodybuilding, as well as the verifiable stats of most top natural pros, have been echoing that sentiment for a long time on here.
While I’m all for the “power of positive thought” (heck, one of my degrees is in psychology, so I do get it when people talk about the mind making the body do things it doesn’t want to), it seems to be a all purpose argument lately with the talk of self imposed limits and such.

Fat is fat, and no matter how much you tell yourself that you’re ‘big’, just a little ‘smooth’, are looking ‘full house’ etc, it’s still not muscle tissue. If the final result is something you’re proud of in the mirror, then that’s great, and it’s what truly counts at the end of the day (unless you’re competing of course). Just don’t be one of those guys who beats their chest telling people how much muscle they’ve built when everything being claimed is well beyond every verifiable athlete’s stats over the last 50 years. Especially if you’re not willing to provide any objective proof (ie. bf tests etc). If you do that, well, expect people to constantly call you out -lol.

Damn. 190lbs here i come!

If 285lbs at 17% bodyfat = 49lbs fat

And now 255lbs in best shape ever and bigger than before

Then 255lbs = -30lbs so 20lbs fat 10lbs water

So 29lbs fat at 255lbs so 11% bodyfat obvi

Thats assuming 0 progress and ignoring the “bigger” comments

Yay

^^exaxtly. Telling some that something hasn’t ever happened or won’t/can’t happen doesn’t mean anything.

People said no one would run a sub 4 minute mile.

People said no one would squat 1,000lbs.

People said no one would walk on he moon.

People said no one would fly.

People said no one would ever circumnavigate the earth.

People said no one would run a sub 10 second 100M.

All of these things were once thought impossible but that didn’t stop the people who accomplished them. If its going to happen then its going to happen no matter what people say.

But all the positive thinking in the world isn’t going to make a person run a 2 minute mile.

But if one meal.is.missed then 250lbs instead of 255 so 11.6%

If that makes sense.

It really depends on the person. Some people can stay full-looking even at less than 6% body fat, these people normally have naturally very round muscle bellies and are generally at a very low body fat without even trying.

There are some who have well visible abs at 12% body fat (I’m like this) while others will need to drop down to less than 8% just to start seeing their abs a bit.

Another point is that except for under water weighing and DEXA, few body fat measures are actually accurate. For example I was once measured at “non-measurable” (meaning less than 1%) by a well renowned bodybuilding coach in Canada but I still had at least 10lbs to lose to be in true contest shape. Furthermore within a 10 days period of that same test, I went to a seminar where several elite coaches attended and got measured by 15 people… the results ranging from 5% all the way up to 15%!!! And these were all high level coaches.

So even if I tell you: the ideal body fat level is 8%, it will be hard to know when you are a “real” 8%.

Yeah, that’s one thing I’ve noticed, ab shape has as much to do with seeing abs as body fat in a lot of cases. If you have deep separated abs, they can show up even if you are carrying some extra fat.

Well, since he’s here to defend himself, I’d love to hear where he came up with such a ridiculously low and obviously wrong estimate.[/quote]

It’s called the body fat deadzone… when someone has some muscle anything between 15 and 20-22% roughly looks the same… because you are not lean enough to have any definition but not fat enough (especially when you have a lot of muscle) to really look out of shape.

It was only a quick visual assessment, and PX never took his tank top off. So he very well might have been 22% body fat (maybe even a bit more since I didn’t get to see the stomach) or he could have been 16%. I actually didn’t make a big point of it, only using that number to give him and idea of the weight he would have to compete in if he was in true contest shape.

I’ve never heard of this… But that makes total sense.

I think someone’s world just got crushed.

Gh15 calls the 7-9% zone the twilight body confusion zone

What I suspected was that you hadn’t seen him without his shirt off, so thanks for confirming. I also he agree that he LOOKED to be about 20% in the videos, maybe a little more. But again, having dealt with guys his size and body composition, that 20% is probably closer to 30%.

The problem is every common measurement technique (including calipers) only measures subcutaneous fat and estimates visceral fat. Unfortunately for the sake of accuracy, visceral fat accounts for around 50% of total bodyfat. And guys who are big and carrying a lot of fat are not accounted for in the equations used to determine BF from calipers, so their visceral fat estimates are usually too low.

Underwater weighing measures the visceral fat and subcutaneous fat, which is why you see such discrepancies between measurements with guys with similar body composition to X.

So you have:
5-6% = DAAAAAMMMMN zone
7-9% = Twilight bidy confusion zone
10-15% = Fit zone
16-22% = The body fat dead zone
23+ = let’s not go there zone
