Training today 5-3-1 Deadlifts

DLs:

135x5x2
155x5
175x3

195x6 (Talking rain is not a good workout drink. I so had to burp during this max rep set. And with a belt on. Uggh. Needless to say, this set wasn’t my best, but I figured I’d make up for it during my heavy singles).

215x1

225x0x2 Seriously? Fuck me! I was pissed. I’ve pulled 225 before and I know I’m stronger now. WTF is my problem. I did a 195 max rep set do over to try to salvage this POS workout.

195x10 I am an asshole.

BBB DLS 135x10x5
GHR BWx10x5
HLR BWx15x5

Because I never pulled 195 for reps before–195x10 is a pr.

hahaha. congrats on your PR

Seems like we both have some mental blocks with the deadlifts.

Nice pulling nonetheless though. 195 x 10 is full of awesome.

OMG! you don’t like rowing? I lurv them. And you have strong numbers too! beyatch

Nice bench PR woman! We’re opposites, benching is something I absolutely loathe. If you asked me, “would you like to bench or get mildly electrocuted?” I’d ask where’s the toaster.

And well done getting back in the pullup game

Don’t worry about that DL - you’ll get it. Is the 5/3/1 ramping protocol? It seems like a lot of working sets before you hit that max set. 195x10 is ridic btw - maybe it was on an off day (which would actually make it pretty stellar).

rowing is my fave…

strong work Nadia!!

Oh, have I had POS workouts where the mental dialogue is just like yours. You’ll get that 225 next time for sure.

Look at how well your bench is progressing! 100 is not a max effort for you. Are you planning a 105 attempt soon?

Nadia, congrats on the 100 bench - awesome stuff!

Alexus: Thanks for laughing at me/with me. I promise I’m only a poor sport in my head. And even then, I really don’t take myself too seriously. I just can’t figure out why I can’t get 225 off the ground anymore. It’s the WTFness about the failing that prompts me to an inner dialogue laced with profanity, not the actual lift missing.

Nikki: I have head case tendencies, I guess that could be hurting me on the DL. Oh well, I’ll 5-3-1 my way back to 225, 5lbs at a time. And if I’m not able to pull 225 again until I can pull it for reps, well that’ll be okay.

Masch: Rowing hurts my wrists. I can’t figure out how to hold the bar comfortably. Thumbs around or no? I’ve actually just begun to enjoy the bench. I think once I learned I could survive a miss, I’ve been able to try harder and make actual progress. Re the DL max miss–I tried after my warm up and my working sets. I don’t think I was burned out or anything. I still felt pretty fresh. I just think I’m not practiced at the skill of heavy singles. Much room for progress I guess.

Mim: I bet I could learn to love the row if I kept track of my rep records. I should do that!

Kimba: Ha! You have an innner voice that curses like a sailor too? Awesome. Must be an east coast thing. I’ve heard it said, and it is true with me, that you can take the girl out of NJ, but you can’t take the Jersey out of the girl. That’s right hookers. What exit? I miss the hate. FOr now, I have no plans for a 105 bench attempt. Maybe before I have to reset I’ll try. 5lbs is a pretty big percentage increase for me. I plan to marvel in the 100 lb glow for as long as I can.

Thank you Cal! I never thought I’d see a triple digit bench.

Training

My friend at work has challenged me to try to run better than a 6 min mile before he does. I haven’t run that fast since HS. But, since I’m all about trying to prove (to myself) that my best years as an athlete are not behind me, I accepted. So, today it was a 1 mile time trial. Time posted=7:22. He ran 6:57. So, he’s a good bit ahead of me. But, this isn’t about him. I have a lot of room for improvement. And while running that mile was damn unpleasant, I’m excited for the challenge.

I knew that you’d see it.

You’ll get the 225 again, don’t worry. Sometimes our bodies just doesn’t want to do what it’s capable of. I don’t know why. Pisses me off, but I can’t explain it lol
Meanwhile, it’s better to focus on the areas that you’re getting stronger in, like your pull-ups!
Yeah, I’m still hung up on those. If I take a week off from pull-ups, I gotta start from scratch.

I love your competitive edge with running… beat him! Beat him!

Aw sweetie, I was most definitely laughing WITH you.

Because I never pulled 195 for reps before–195x10 is a pr.

You DID get a PR - just not quite the one you were hoping for.

I read somewhere that more weight = stronger, but more reps = stronger, too.
I don’t find the latter as satisfying as the former, but there it is…
I get very upset when I can’t do something I’ve done before, so I do feel your pain with that.

Oh yes, I swear like a sailor in my head when things don’t go right. But I’m from California, so what’s my excuse again?!?!?

Oooo…a speed challenge! That would be fun. Today I’m still doing knee-penance for my downhill skiing escapade earlier this week. But I am looking forward to spring-time running with a vengeance!

Nikki: Pullups are back in the rotation in a big way. And I’m excited about them again–finally–which is a very good thing!

Alexus: 195x10 is real progress for me with the DL and I’m excited about that. I do know that I’m stronger. And I’m hopeful that with more practice I’ll improve in my ability to pull heavy singles.

Kimba: You’re a california girl? Well then, I have no explanation for your sauciness. You’ll be all patched up and back on the road again soon I’m sure. You’re smart to take it easy.

I like the idea of being able to run faster, but actually training to run faster is not on my this is fun list. I heart the long slow distance. But, the speed work is essential if I want to make any further improvements with my running. I’ve got my half next weekend, so after that I’ll have to come up with some kind of plan.

+++++++++++++

Training today–5 mile run and buckets of yard work. I feel surprisingly good. I thought second day DL soreness was going to leave me largely immobile (given how horrible I felt y’day), but today I’m hardly sore at all. Sweet.

I know what you mean about running. On my long slows I can enjoy the scenery, daydream and make plans. If I’m working on speed, which happens rarely, it’s uncomfortable and I’m just willing myself to get to the end.
Good luck with your half. I bet you finish a good 30 minutes before I will.

whatever you do, just have fun and don’t get hurt

always a fan of swearing like a sailor, mentally or verbally.

i think you need someone yelling at you for 225. you’re strong enough, just gotta let your head in on the plan.

if all else fails, picture your kids trapped under the ends and you HAVE to lift it.

Cal: Thanks for the well wishes. So long as I go under 2 hours I’ll be happy–but only because my sister has never run under 2. She ran a 5k this weekend in 25:02. It was cold and windy and with the tough weather on the east coast this winter she’s hardly in shape right now. Speed training is a necessity if I’m going to compete with her.

Mim: Winning is fun. Losing hurts. Injuries happen. I’m only a little competitive. Smile.

Cbear: Yeah you’re right. I need to do something to get out of my head. I’ll have to post the long version of my one and only 225 pull–my husband walked in to the gym—I giggled like a school girl and then I got it. Fear and love are powerful motivators.

Training today

5 mile run
breakfast

5-3-1 squats and 5-3-1 MP crammed together to give me time to deload sufficiently for my half.

Squats
barx10
65x5
90x5
105x3
115x8 (+5 pr)

Because it takes me days to recover from BBB squats, I bailed on those today. I want to run well next weekend.

Heavy singles:
135x1
145x1
155x0
155x1 +5lb pr (Probably a little high, but since my 150 squat was high too, I’m calling it a pr). I have video I’ll try to post later.

Pullups
Bwx12
25lbsx3x2
20x3x3

Heavy singles:
35lbsx1
45lbsx 1/2 Although I missed, I was really happy that I was able to strongly initiate the pull. I’ve never tried to pull up a plate before, but now I know that I will be able to and soon.

MPs
55x5
65x3
70x3
BBB 45x10x5 I was thoroughly fatigued through these.

HLR 3 sets of 10.

Wow, nice PRs!
And yes, there’s no chance of me running a half in under two hours. On a really good day I can do a 10K in just under an hour and I don’t expect to maintain that kind of speed for more than twice the distance. I’d be happy to finish it in 2:20.

way to set elebenty pr’s right before your deload!!

why is your 5/3/1 squat set to 115 if you’re doing singles with 155?
