It is and at least I know she is still looking at it !
yup. I have a relationship with my brain. Scary, I know. But not taking care of myself is unacceptable to me now. Plus, my heart meds have been lowered and I don’t feel like ripping people’s heads off for bs shit. That’s why advice is always appreciated. I might not get it at first, but seeds can always be planted. I do a lot of reading and sometimes think…oh, so that’s what they were telling me.
Gaining weight is extremely easy for me. I just have to stop resisting the urge to eat and eat when hungry. Maintaining weight feels like I’m starving myself.
Last night before bed I consumed 200g of Mini Eggs and a bag of Orville Redenbacher Sweet & Salty Popcorn while watching “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” on Netflix.

Then I had some protein “icing” (protein with some almond milk to the point of icing-like consistency) to bump my protein values a tad.

. Dude you made my day with this. Awesome job hitting the macros man.
You do realize almond milk has like no protein?
The added protein probably makes up for it.
18 year old (6’ 2"-6’ 4" 150lb) highschooler approached me about 2 weeks ago for some lifting advice, he has been coming in very regularly for the last 6-8 weeks and just kind of figuring stuff out on his own, I familiarized him with the concepts of 5/3/1 and gave him some reading material, he ate it up…came in the next day asking for more info and asking if I’d help with the initial percentages and finding training maxes and such, helped him out, he’s been working on the basic 5/3/1 template for the last 2 weeks and really likes having the direction. He came in today about 2 hours later than normal (around 8am as opposed to 6am) and when I asked him if he slept in or was skipping class or what was going on, he simply stated, “We have school today, but it’s senior skip day, so I came here first.”
The confession attached to this is that I am probably way more excited about his potential than I should be, and that I was a little proud of him when he chose to start his senior skip day at the gym, trying to get better. Trying my hardest not to go overboard with advice, what you should do’s, and wish I would have knowns.
Goddamn do I wish I had 5/3/1 when I started lifting in High School. If I was smart enough to follow it, I woulda been SO much further ahead than I am now.
I suspect I’m one of the few active TN members who has not only never run 5/3/1, I don’t even know what it is. (My impression is, it’s very odd.)
I appreciate the subtlety of this one.
It is also a primer for advanced lifting.
Not odd at all. It’s just a progression model for the main lifts. Basically it’s 3 week waves of lifting a little heavier each week, then start over but with a little more weight.
Super simplified it would be:
Week 1= 5x185, week 2= 3x205, week 3= 1x225
Then
Week 1= 5x190, week 2= 3x210, week 3= 1x230
Etc…
The assistance work is where everyone loses their mind.
I was talking to one of the old timers at the gym today and I told him I was doing 531 building the monolith. He just laughed at me and said “Son, this is nothing new. When I was a youngin we were doing 6/4/2 and getting strong” lol.
Made me laugh. Realized that the principles of the program have been around forever!
His “odd” comment was in regard to it not having any even numbers.
Ahhh I see. I’ll show myself out.
A prime example of good humor.
I genuinely think the dude was just trying to one-up you by adding “1” to all of the numbers you mentioned.
Don’t get me wrong; the principles of 5/3/1 have been around forever, but as a guy who has read a lot of stuff on lifting, I’ve never seen mention of a “6/4/2” approach to training.
Confession: I have a 1.4lb ribeye steak in my freezer that I’m waiting until after I finish the Murph workout on memorial day to consume. It’s a confession because not eating this thing right away is hurting me right in the soul.
I also confess that I REALLY want to believe you can’t overeat protein, and as long as you cut out carbs, you can eat all the meat you want and all you’ll gain is muscle. I know it’s not true, but every once in a while I tell myself it is.
Youre just off by a few numbers…
