Once I saw a guy dying to get up the weight he’s benching with. I ran quickly and helped him rack it.
He said to me that he “could bench it alone”. Needless to say, the smell of his fart gave me cancer…
Today’s kids would never frequent a gym like that. It’s not a judgement free zone. ![]()
Haha. A while back, my fiancee and I were benching. Two benches down a mid 40s fellow was training with a buddy, cleary having some years under the bar.
The kid between us was struggling with 135. Loose as the last smoke in a pack, but not doing much damage. He then proceeded to load-up 185 and tried to grind the worst rep I had ever seen. Ass higher than the bar. The seasoned guy and myself gave each other a look, and proceeded to grab each respective end of the bar to get it off of this kid; he was clearly about to hurt himself.
Anyway, the man politely told the kid to ask for a spotter next time he was looking to bench, and the kid got all huffy and puffy and I even overhead him telling a friend that the “old guy” was annoying or w/e. Shit kid, tear a pec if you want, but I’d listen to the big salt & peppered fellow.
I’d probably blow a gasket if I overheard that. At least throw some major shade his direction. The kind that you feel in your bones.
I miss the old gyms with owners that were beasts and pictures of body builders all around. I miss the camaraderie. I had the pleasure of working out in one for years when I was young and it was just awesome that some of those guys went out of their way to acknowledge me. I wasn’t the one bench pressing 4 plates or better, but I’d like to tell some of those guys that even just saying hi to a fat 12 year old kid was awesome of them.
You won’t even see a picture of a bodybuilder in most gyms today. No inspiration that you could be the next Arnold or Ronnie. Too many signs asking you not to make loud noises.
yeah, and they don’t realise that a disagreement on a forum is actually a good thing, as people can learn from each other.
I would absolutely love if some of the more seasoned posters (and I include you and I in that category) would disagree more but our opinions on training are all so god damn similar! Haha
couldn’t comment on the part of the world where you live, mate, but here in the UK bodybuilding-type gyms are making a bit of a comeback. Obviously the health clubs still dominate, but there’s more and more of these little spit and sawdust places popping up over here now.
I actually think we have Crossfit to thank for it. Crossfit reminded us gyms could just be rooms with loads of barbells without anything fancy.
I hope so.
Wait… are you saying Crossfit is not an abomination?
Never heard this one before! Nice.

This is the shit I was talking about earlier!
The resemblance is almost uncanny if you ask me.
Yo quick question, when someone gives the advice ‘no carbs around dinner/bedtime’ does that include green veges?
Probably not?
While veggies are typically carbs, they fall into that nebulous category of zero net carbs, some shit to do with grams of carbs minus grams of fiber that I do not understand.
I don’t even count green vegetables as carbs at all - to me carbs are potatoes and what not. I avoid gluten, but any type of bread product would be bad before bed, at least for me.
So, no, green veggies don’t count, but fruit probably would.
Ok cool thanks guys, that’s what I wanted to hear!
Just after reading this, someone on the bus I’m on farted. My eyes are burning
I am entirely too damned excited about getting a deal on a used EliteFTS Prowler and some bumper plates and whatnot. I mean like kid in a candy store kind of glee. It’s almost embarrassing.
Lol, I tried to think of something more family friendly than what I could have gone with.
It was pretty irritating. But at the same time, it’s reassuring in a passive aggressive sort of way that he’s probably just added a few years to how long he’ll be spinning his wheels.
