The Flame-Free Confession Thread

it wouldn’t be so bad, in my opinion, if the people who are giving the shit advice didn’t throw such a tantrum when they get called out on their bullshit

I’m on an epic road trip and had to MacGyver up a mirror intended for a small pickup so it would fit my 35 foot RV. I had to bend that shit hard and I looked at my brother and told him, “Big people are harder to kill and generally more useful in life.”

Now, I’m far from being big, but if I didn’t lift, no chance of that happening.

Yesterday I had to get my car off my dolly and the ratchet was jacked up in the cowling of the car so I had to shoulder the car up while releasing the ratchet and I looked at my travel partner and said, “Big people are harder to kill and generally more useful in life.”

So, picking up shit in the gym does transfer,

Isn’t it “big people are harder to kidnap…”?

Pretty sure a bullet or a car crash or a heart attack will kill a large person just as effectively as a little bloke. Lol

I had to look it up and this is the actual quote from Mark Rippetoe.

“Strong people are harder to kill than weak people and more useful in general.”

I’m a fan of Rip, think he is funny as shit, but am no longer drinking the SS Kool Aid, but still, a pretty good take on life.

I was uh definitely watching the cat say mama and not staring at the mama.

Yeah thanks for that man, i knew it was total bullshit what they were saying but im glad you called them out for it. Otherwise anyone relatively new to lifting such as myself could read it and absorb utter crap information.

I think that is a sure sign of the dynamic I am describing. They don’t see a comment about their advice as a critique of the info but as am attack om their “status”

I have the attention span of a drunken chihuahua with ADHD, which is why I’m considering joining a cross fit gym rather than just training in my garage.

Of course, I won’t actually join a cross fit gym because that would take an attention span, but thinking about cross fit will get my lazy ass out of my chair and outside to lift.

My goal today is to wait until after I lift and a dip in the pool for my first beer.

I care just enough about the way I look to do cardio, but not enough to stop drinking.

I have hair growing on the back of my ear lobes.

I’m okay with this. I’m old.

Once you carry an appreciable amount of muscle, there’s something special about being lean. I can’t quite put my finger on it. Perhaps it’s the hard work of building that muscle coupled with the hard work of cutting down to reveal it?

I have an obsession with tank tops. I own probably 50? They help me stay lean. If I start going the wrong direction bf wise, then I don’t enjoy my tanks as much lol.

Over the last 2-3 years I’ve probably had 10 different people tell me I look like Captain America In 3 or 4 different gyms. 2 of them were a couple that are professional bodybuilders. The wife came up to me one day while her husband was doing laterals and told me how they have names for the regulars lol. I can’t imagine what they call some people! I bet crap like this happens to some of you.

Share some gym stories.

Squats and cleans will only help you. I too would have loved to give this a run, but not happening at my age and a wife + 2 kids. Do it man.

Since high school, I have had total strangers come up and inform me that I look like Matt Damon. I have steadily gained 45lbs since that time, and the comments have changed to reflect that.

“You look like Matt Damon”
“You look like Matt Damon did in The Bourne Identity”
“You look like Matt Damon, only a little bigger”
“You look like a big Matt Damon”
“You look like Matt Damon on steroids”
“You look like you ate Matt Damon”

Haha! Did you know this person? That’s hilarious.

Yeah; it was a co-worker. It was a comment they made after another person made the “you look like Matt Damon” initial comment.

It could be worse I suppose.

@T3hPwnisher

How are you feeling these days. Honestly.

From getting to know you a little bit through your posts, I would assume you just flat out block out some aches and pains in an effort to continue progressing.

I address my aches and pains, but I’m starting to realize that I’m going to hurt, and need to push through it more often than not and not freak out about it. I’ve got a knee issue I’ve been dealing with for 2 years now, and have had it looked at more times than I can count. It gets sore after squatting, then clears up after a few days only to get sore again after squats. At this point, I’m just saying F it and continuing to progress. Monitoring volume, etc.

Your knee sore after squats?

I could be wrong… I have seen this on many occasions, allot from younger guys. Personal I think too many guys growing up have been told how special they are .(here have a trophy) That once they get the hint that maybe they are not that special, in this case being their knowledge regarding the subject at hand they over react. I think of myself as fairly knowledgeable based on my time involvement in this hobby.BUT if I give out bad advice and someone thinks it is and calls me out and can actually provide a well thought out reason with facts why its wrong. Am I going to lose my shit? NOPE… I will sit back think about it and in the end will admit that I was wrong or off base if that is the case. Besides , for myself personally I dont base my status on what I might or might not know in the first place but what I actually achieve in the pursuit of my goals.

I am always in some sort of pain, but it is so constant that I don’t really notice it. The best example is that I stopped taking my pain meds WAY too early after my ACL surgery. I THOUGHT I was painfree and cut myself off, and then 2 weeks later noticed that THEN I was painfree.

For my knee specifically, I only concern myself with pain around the surgical site. My IT band os always a little achy.

That’s just being mature.

That’s where the younger audience fails. Not really their fault. If anything, blame parenting or society in general.

And it just might be just a maturity thing or even a generational thing. Probably part of my view point stems from my own early gym experiences starting out. I told this story once my first taste of being in a actual gym was a old school Black iron mom and pop type gym. The type you go into and you see pics of the members whom competed along with trophies all over the place. The type of place that puts your ego in place real quick. Along with making you earn a actual status since it wasn’t handed out. Dont get me wrong guys weren’t dicks or anything but you had to earn respect in their eyes .

This one made me cry. You totally look like an angry Matt Damon

I don’t think the younger generation will even interpret their demeanor and body language properly. They will probably think they’re just dumb, roided up assholes who have an exclusive “big boy’s club”. See the example @T3hPwnisher posted above. A simple “how many sets do you have left” from someone bigger than average is now interpreted as a form of confrontation instead of “can I work in with you?”.

*Younger guys, we’re not dissing all of you. Every generation has it’s snowflakes. It’s just that as the standard of living gets higher, the number of them grows. If you aren’t anything like what we are describing, then none of it applies to you.
