No problem! Maybe eat some mushrooms for maximum immersion?
Younger guy at work (25) strong guy well built around 230lbs a few years under his belt…told me he wants to start coming over to my place and start lifting from time to time. Says he wants some lifting insight and input from a old timer prospective. Not sure i should be flattered or offended… ![]()

Probably going to happen to me soon. That’s when I will buy a Harley and start dressing like the guys on Jersey Shore.
Training Maximally has been the only version/template/program that I’ve really enjoyed. I’ve done others but it fits my personality best. And thank you for introducing me to it. I read the book and read that section but it didn’t register until I started following your log.
In regards to everyone’s comments about complicating the simple… that’s an easy one to figure out. MONEY. Jim comes on here and every damn day someone is asking him what to do. So he takes all of his advice and thoughts and puts them in a book. He arranges them accordingly and gives them a fancy name and then sells it to everyone for another $25-40 a pop. And then after a few more years of answering stupid questions and providing personal guidance he veers away from his early teaching and sells a new system.
Seriously, look at the books. He made money printing pages that tell people how they can split their days.
Monday-squat, Tuesday-OHP, Thursday-Deadlift, Friday-Bench OR
Monday-squat, Wednesday-OHP, Thursday-Deadlift, Saturday-Bench OR… and so on and so on.
And then someone asks him on the forum if they can do deadlift on Monday… and another book is born.
Any time I see a post starting with ‘Hi CT I’m a neurotype…’ I immediately think the poster is a dick. It’s not that CT’s neurotype theory is stupid, it just seems that it’s providing people with the new version of ‘woe is me for I a special ecto/endo snowflake’.
I’ve actually had to stop following his section of the forum due to all of those posts. It’s too bad because I really like his stuff. I think his neurotype stuff is phenomenal because it’s something he’s observed and it’s new. He’s trying to add to the industry instead of just regurgitating old stuff. But new is often unproven. And the nuerotyping stuff seems like common sense to me. Not everyone likes the same stuff. Find what you like to do and you’re more likely to do it. Duh.
I have seen this theory espoused before and I find it somewhat hard to believe. Don’t get me wrong; I am sure Jim enjoys making money from his work, but I more doubt the idea that Jim had all of 5/3/1 figured out in 2009 when he released the first book and has just been slowly leaking it out to prolong the money stream, mainly because his own training in 2009 more closely matched what he released around that time. I imagine it is simply the evolution of thought unfolding.
I have to drop a car at the mechanic for the first time in years. Some problems are best fixed by paying a pro. Car is a 90s Z & there is no Haynes or Chilton book. Internet has lots of resources but car is near impossible (w/o lift and/or hoist and/or compressor & torch) to work on sometimes.
I can tear any 1990 or newer Honda down to bits but this Z is like a sadistic joke played on anyone over 5’4" with anything other than tiny lady hands & joints made of rubber bands & teflon.
I was referring more to the assistance stuff that he’s put out in the books. I don’t have Forever but from the original to Beyond 5/3/1 he drastically increased the assistance options in the book and I think it’s due to all of the questions he received (still receives). Eventually a guy just gets to the point where he says “Fine, I’ll spell it out for you!”
I don’t think it was a grand scheme; I think it’s just something that’s happened. I don’t blame him one bit. As long as there’s demand, then you supply it. But I feel that ignorance, stupidity, or the inability to think for oneself has definitely provided him more opportunities than it should have. Those things are still abundantly present in his section of the forum.
I did like the addition of the challenges to Beyond.
In regards to his simple program growing to what it has, I think it’s mostly something that’s occurred as a combination of his personal growth and, as stated above, the stupidity of others. He’d be a fool not to benefit from giving people what they want.
Here’s some insights into how his training philosophy has developed.
Yeah; I was a big fan of that video series.
They’re both bullshitting. What does Jim know about business when he doesn’t use formal business terms? How is it possible that people have the common sense not to write programs only suitable for assisted lifters if they want to make money? I’m done with all the lies!
I think that is part of his system. The right words said with proper intensity will achieve the desired results, just as if Benni Magnusson would very intensely say “BAHHHHH!” at you.
Either way, that bar gonna move!
Resist it. Solidarity hurts.
I regularly browse buzzfeed. I enjoy their quizzes
woah it’s been a few years since I’ve done that!
I think I might give barbell benching a go again soon, but I can safely say I’ll never attempt a 1RM on the bench (or probably any other exercise) again for as long as I live.
Welcome back Bro!
My confessions:
1 - I started working out because of knee issues that prevented me from running. Yes, I was a runner.
2 - I’ve never seen my abs, even when I went from 212 to 163 lbs at 6’2".
3 - I’m lifting seriously for 2 years (3 in total) and I’m still weak like a kid at age 27.
4 - During the workout I only listen ambient/chillout music (like Boards Of Canada, Vangelis, Aphex Twin)
5 - I can only do 7 consecutive pull-ups.
6 - The MILF I usually date has wrists bigger than mine (and no, she’s not fat).
Ugh… I think certain people whom reach celebrity status in the fitness realm need a reality check .I swear some of them I think, believe that they are curing cancer on a daily bases.
