The Flame-Free Confession Thread

I think 5/3/1 got a lot less cool because he had to clarify it so much for the idiots.

The original was the best thing ever because it was so simple, but the idiots asked so many questions he had to get into the minutiae of it. Now you’ve got fruity jumps and shit like that, along with Joker sets and a load of other nonsense.

All the shit like jumps or whatever probably does make it a lot more effective, but it’s just not as cool now.

I feel terrible that Jim is trapped in some sort of Kafkaesque nightmare where, the more he explains the simpliest system on earth, the more people manage to screw it up even further.

He’s done it to himself partly by giving everything a “marketing gimmick” name… Krypteia, FSL, BBB, Joker Sets, Leader/Anchor, etc… Granted, its all in the books but the “simplest program” has like 100+ official variations of it. Obviously I understand the reason for the variations, as no two trainee’s have the same exact needs and goals, but there is a lot more to it than the 5/3/1 aspect of the program (the simple part), which almost no one has questions on (which really only address the weight/intensity for 3 sets of a single lift each training day).

Although really these days I find myself thinking the answer to almost every training question could easily be “Try it and see if it works for you” - not sure how satisfying that answer would be to most people though.

This is actually what I’m talking about. It’s amazing how many questions are like “I know it’s squat, bench, press and deadlift, but can I do leg press, dumbbell bench, no press and kettlebell swings?” “I know the TM is 90% of 1rm, but can I use 110% instead?” “I know it’s a 4 day a week program, but can I run it for 6 days?” “Can I do rows 5/3/1?” etc etc. I don’t even register the questions on the more unique aspects of it; I’m blown away that people can’t do the basics.

Oh my god yes. People want permission for some reason.

Ahh thats true, there are quite a few of those.

From what I’ve done with 5/3/1 I get the feeling you could ditch everything except PR sets, BBB, multiple sets of FSL and Triumvirate and it’d actually be better. I’m sure all the templates are really good and adding jumps and throws is fun, but there are just too many templates with too much stuff. It’s like when they release all these different kinds of M&Ms when really all you need or want are plain chocolate or peanut.

What surprises me is that so few people ever mention Training Maximally. It’s been as much of a game changer for me as the original 5/3/1 was.

It’s really not that fucking hard. People just want to be told what to do.

Upwards of 1/3 and probably close to 1/2 of my daily calories are coming from my new favorite cereal (fruity dinobites with marshmellows) and milk.

And no, I’m not pouring the milk on the cereal. That’s gross.

With the new book its no where near simple anymore, it shouldn’t be in the title. I’d say if you could fit everything on a single excel spreadsheet and plug in a couple numbers, like your 1RM. Even with a couple variations like BBB and Triumvirate it would still qualify since you do main lift + option A, B or C for assistance or something.

I noticed on the forums Jim gives this template out often, I think this is the modern “simple” version of 5/3/1 if you had to dumb it down and say “here is 5/3/1, do this and don’t ask any questions”.

2 cycles Leader
5’s pro + 5x5 FSL
Assistance 50-100 reps of the 3 categories

Deload

1 cycle Anchor
PR sets (the original 5/3/1)
Same assistance

Deload, repeat everything above with new training max

Which are all fairly original concepts. I get why he added the anchor leader shit, but it just makes it more obnoxious to me. That’s why I haven’t gotten the new book. I don’t really feel I need it. I like reading them, but I don’t even really want it. The original 531 works. Also, I feel people take too much too literally. Like the Agile 8 dick riders. Only thing it did for me was almost tear my adductor to be honest.

Big layoffs at my workplace (I started in January). I had a team of 5 when I started, laying off my last person tomorrow. I can really pick a workplace let me tell ya.

Here’s the ugly part. This employee is an awesome guy who’s been with the company 12 years. He went into rehab on June 26th, he got hooked on pain meds due to back pain. So we got him the paperwork for a LTD claim with the insurance.

My boss insists that I call him in rehab and lay him off tomorrow. He was slated for a layoff this round due to business conditions anyway, so the lawyer says we’re in the clear. That’s enough for my boss.

I get to kick a decent man while he’s down. I really fucking hate my job.

enjoy
