mate your increase in strength is awesome, i think when i finish my current routine i will talk to the trainer about a version of this.

personaly i cant do a chin up and a pull up is way out of my league, same with dips, at 106kgs with a dodgey elbow they are my nemisis, but with the assisted dip machine i am making progress.

as an aside to your wife and what she wants you to do, has she been talking to my wife, or are all wifes built the same?

im really happy fr you with your progress and i hope that your newest venture works out just as well for you.
Ah yes, the wives. Full of support, but only if you do as they say. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: I probably make her sound worse than she really is. Very supportive, just wants me to lose weight instead of gain more muscle.

I’ll be doing Rippetoe again in 4 weeks, maybe 8 depending on how well I do with 10x3.

Yeah, me and cardio are like oil and water. I am trying though. The weather is getting nicer here, so its easier to get out and walk or jog. High of 51 F today.

Why? 3x5 squats doesn’t get your heart pumping enough?

its a bad habbit i know im guilty of making my wife sound worse than she is, but at the same time her goals for your look have a much stronger apeal to her than your own goals for yourself and sense of esteme and self worth that you will feel when you can finaly hit that magic number that you have always wanted.

i also wouldnt mind betting that no matter how dimpled your wifes arse got just like me, with my own wife not yours, you wouldnt say a damned thing because although there is a myth that women are caring and suportive men seem alot more sensitive when it comes to body image and sense of self worth, and you dont want to hurt your wifes feelings in a way that she doesnt mind hurting yours.

have you tried the old muscle burns more fat than cardio, and that it ramps up my metabolism for so much longer than cardio and the if the car ever gets a flat ill be able tolift it with one arm and losen the lug nuts with my bare fingers lines?

 Different parts of the world, but we’re speaking the same language. We’ve had these conversations. “I don’t want you getting any bigger [or stronger].” Essentially she wants me to look like Brad Pitt or Matthew McConaughey - skinny and defined. Opposite of my goals. I would like to be defined though, just not rail thin.

its funny i had a discussion with a trainer at the gym. talking about all the guys tha come in wanting to look like a models, bugger that i dont want to look like a model i want to look like someone models pay to not hurt them.

like all guys i want to be sexy to my wife and truth be told to every one elses as well and if my traiing gives m a six pack then thats great, but id rather be functioaly strong than rake thin with a little makeup added to enhance the look of definition.

Dude what were your rest periods like? I read the whole link and could not find anything about it.

The program suggests 2-3 minutes or until you feel recovered. I used 1 min rest because I felt fine at that point and was always in a time crunch. That gave me about 45 - 1 hour total gym time.

I just read through this and wanted to thank you for posting it all. I’m a new convert to the iron, and am starting out on Rippetoe’s to build up my core strength (years of a back injury left me pretty weak). This was inspirational!

Glad I can motivate. Any questions, just ask.

As far as back problems, I was skeptical to do Rippetoe at first because of the deadlifts. I had problems performing the exercise in the past. Repetitive lower back spasms. Well, doing deadlifts correctly and all the squatting has really helped … a lot. I don’t even go to the chiropractor anymore.

I know what you mean. My first go-around at lifting last fall (which lasted all of 6 weeks) made my back feel better than ever (I injured my back when I was in the Marine Corps). Since then, I’ve had my pheonix moment, and are doing this right, and my back responded much better to the routine - I started almost exactly where I left off. My doctor is amazed at the progress I’ve made with my back pain, and fully supports my lifting.

Mods, please move this to the new Training section. Thanks.

Just wanted to come through again and give some props. Your logs have been a motivation to push myself in my own log. Thanks and good luck with the rest of it.

BROOTAL

R I P P E T O E P A R T T W O

Today begins my second journey. Today I have focus. A goal. Yesterday I worked out. Today I train.

I am training to be a strongman. No, I don’t plan to be on ESPN anytime soon. This is to test myself. To see how far I can push my body. I also miss competing. I played sports all through high school - 12 years ago. I want a challenge.

Today begins the first step towards a strongman competition. There is a meet this summer that I am attempting to prepare for. My goal is to get as strong as possible. That should seem obvious. I still need to lose a couple of pounds. I don’t think I could hang in the 230 weight class. I must drop down to 200 if I have any chance.

A student (Senior) of mine already competes and has about every kind of implement. He also has experience. Very helpful.

So today marks a new day for me. I am excited for the challenges that lay ahead. Enough with the talk, it’s time to train.

good luck dude. im aiming myself mostly for olympic lifting.

maybe you should do another program though. though i highly doubt you reached the plateau with rippetoe anyway so you can do it. you never even missed a rep as far as i remember

I started missing on military press. According to Mark, that is the first to go anyway. I really need to improve on my pressing strength and deadlift this time around.

Good luck, dude! I’ll be following this one for sure. Your logs are always good for motivation!

Today’s Training

bench press
5x225
5x215
5x215

front squat
5x225
5x225
5x225

deadlift
5x275

dips
12xbw
12xbw

bw = 238

I don’t know what I was thinking on bench. I started all wrong. This week was going to ease into the whole program. I probably should have started something else before Ripp, but I love it too much. Overshot with 225, then barely got the last reps on the last set. FS was no biggie. I really can’t wait to get back up to the weights I was using. I plan on it taking a couple of weeks, hopefully on more. I still need to get that dip belt. Anyone want to ask my mommy, I mean wife for me? My hands are tied, she pays the bills and is a stickler to the budget. Better her than me.

Dear Mrs. TheDudeAbides,

Your husband has been a really good sport, and often thinks of others before himself. Therefore, he is more than deserving of a dip belt, so he can continue to inspire others with his training logs.

Sincerely,
Darwin

… think it’ll work for ya?
