The Buff Referee

It is another example of this country’s poor health and fitness habits, not to mention the ignorance towards weightlifting. This guy looks good and is fit. Which is fine. I know he is 55, but it is sad that we have to celebrate somebody because he is in shape. Everybody should be fit, but it is not the case.
THAT is what I was getting at. The people in my family are generally not fat bastards. They are some muscular people on my dad’s side though. I am actually surprised that this particular man is in magazines as the apparent epitome of development at age 55 when it comes to holding down a job, outside interests and still taking care of yourself. That doesn’t degrade him, it just makes the rest of the country look sad because he isn’t that damned developed.

Agreed. Also if your lawnmower is self driving, then that would explain the lack of mass on your average lawn mower man.

Bottom line, more than 3/4 of us will not look that good at his age. THAT’s the truth.

X, you’re definitly an idealist…people are so lazy now, that’s why this guy is looked at like a freak.

55 and still being active and fit is quite an accomplishment giving the context of our society nowadays. I give him credit for being in better shape than 95% of the people his age. He’s no QuarterTonner or whatever, but he is still to be applauded for not being like the rest of his age group.

Honestly, I would hope that I could be as fit at 55 as he is. Maybe with a better routine or diet, but still around there.

He looks good on TV.

Considering he is a full-time lawyer and a full-time referee at the highest level, I am surprised he has time for the gym at all.

And if he likes his routine and it gets results, who cares? His goal is not to swoon at himself in the mirror for 3 hours a day in a double biceps pose. He likes to be strong and fit.

A 55 year old who can get up 300+ on his bench is great. He has 12 marathons under his belt. Very impressive.

nicely put

I’m so sick of the bs on this site. The guy is 55 and looks good. Does he qualify for the Olympia.NO-who gives a rats ass.

Ohman he must be a dueschbag because he doesn’t eat like Berardi. Give it a rest fellas. Your goals are not everyones goals.

And I G-damned guarantee you–most people do not look like this from mowing the lawn. Look around. That’s what most people look like who’s only workout is mowing the lawn.

And yah dude–I bet some guy in your gym is bigger. I bet there is someone in my gym bigger than you. Maybe even bigger than you think you are.

Finally someone with some sense. The blokes 55 For fuck sake. And for 55 thats pretty good shape.

Supposedly, 55 is the “new 45”. Turning 50 doesn’t mean your grave stone is ready.

xactly why i don’t post pics or info on this site. more flaming than anything constructive. dude is doing great.

Your original post–to which I responded–said NOTHING about giving him credit. After you were called on the carpet you backhandedly begrudgingly did say he may be fit.

what post of mine were you responding to again? your first post on this thread did not refer to mine. I didn’t backhand shit - I came right out and gave the guy his props once again, all I said is that his workout is imbalanced, his gains could have been much better if he followed some of the stuff on this site, and in the end, the only reason they are celebrating this guy is not for his development per se, but only because he is an oddity among NFL referees. Why is this so hard for you to comprehend?

Believe it or not, there are people out there who lift weights to be bodybuilders.

really… do tell…

Those sites have as much validity for them as any other site out there.

really, next thing you’re going to tell me is that the training info in Muscle and Fiction or Flex has as much validity as something you’d read here? If you honestly believe this, why are you on this site? This site is pretty open about shitting all over that whole scene. It’s kind of odd don’t you think?

The info on this site is top notch, but the fact remains it’s not the only or even the best way to lift for alot of people.

I never said it was. Again with the leaps in logic and putting words in my mouth.

Because you’re one of the followers means little to me as does your opinion CHIEF.

Hey, you’re on the site too, CHIEF. Glad to have you along fellow follower.

So let’s just agree to disagree shall we, we’ll all be happy little mindless drones together - this is getting boring.
I see that you’ve appointed yourself and this site as the only true way to lift weights.

Wrong again chief.

How many great physiques were built before and without this ‘NEW’ information. Without this ‘innovative’ way of looking at fitness.

One thing the prof said that I certainly agree with is consistancy and hard work are as valuable if not more than the worlds greatest workout.

I’m glad you found this site, it sounds like you needed it.

While you are correct that I am indeed on this site, it doesn’t mean that I believe it to be the one and only gospel of weights as you’ve apparently annoited it and yourself. It’s just more information to add to the mix.

I totally agree with you this guy is taking care of himself and these dickheads want to hate.

Who wrote otherwise? I made a point of how sad it is that things are this way in this country. It is “normal” to completely let yourself go by 45 and have one foot in a grave by 50. It is now “abnormal” to lift weights and try to stay fit. That’s pretty fucking sad any way you look at it.

No kidding.

You know, I waws freezing my balls off at work today and I was reminded of this guy. I fill propane tanks for people, they are 20 lbs empty, and 40 pounds full.

It is remarkable to watch the lengths people go to in order to avoid carrying the damn things farther than five feet (even when they’re empty). The parking lot ain’t that big, but these guys will drive their cars 25 feet, from their parking space, right next to the tank, in order to avoid carrying it.

I don’t mind helping older people out, or women of course, by bringing the tank to wherever they want it. But I flat out refuse to bring it back and forth for some 30 year old guy who just doesn’t want to move it.

Out of the 50-60 year old guys that I see everyday, I am disgusted by how they let themselves go. My money is on the fact that only 3 or 4 out of 100 could do more than 15 pushups. It is truly pathetic the state that people are in. We live twenty years longer than we used to, but those 20 years are spent being fat pieces of shit waiting for heartattacks. Sure sounds like fun to me.

My rant is over.

So the guy has a cheat meal of Cheetos and chocolate kisses every now and then, big deal. As for not eating red meat, he probably has gotten medical advice that says he shouldn’t eat red meat.

DB

Do you think he got medical advice to eat Cheetos instead of red meat?

Exactly. The whole “I don’t eat red meat” comment is used by many as if their health is now impeccable because they dropped the horrors of red meat consumption. It is a comment made by those who know little about nutrition and simply believed what someone told them once by also saying, “red meat will kill you”. I just bought a pound of 98% lean ground red meat…aka BEEF. Somebody stop me. To say you don’t eat red meat as a rule and then follow that up with “I eat Cheetos” is retarded. I am glad the guy gets so much support on a freaking bodybuilding forum in spite of that crap. Hell, some will even defend his comment as if it made sense.

I applaud the guy for working out. I am sure he looks better than 85% or more of the people in this country his age. If I see another picture of him looking huge, I will give him even more credit for it. That picture posted isn’t it and, again, he isn’t that damn big for someone claiming to train regularly. If some of you have that as a goal at 55, more power to you. I was under the impression that many of us here were NOT just settling for “well, he sure looks better than most his age” and leaning much more towards, “damn, he’s 55!?”. I apologize for setting my goals higher. I shall lower them so as not to piss anyone off.
I think you are confusing bodybuilder with someone who trains and aims to live a healthy lifestyle. We don’t know how this guy sees himself or what he aspires to. I don’t think it’s fair to crticize him without knowing what his goals are.

Maybe criticize the author of the article for exalting him. Or people on this site if they’re saying that his accomplishments are impressive for a BODYBUILDER of his age. Not for being impressed with his fitness for someone who’s 55. Personal goals may well be higher. Either way, they’re not all that relevant in my mind.

I don’t think just in the context of our society. There’s plenty of people who place a premium of fitness and health who could care less about being bodybuilder big and shredded.

Top endurance ahtletes are damn impressive though I wouldn’t want to look like one. I think what’s admirable by it’s nature is being confounded with a standard that may well not exist for this guy. Maintaining fitness is a good thing whether the society around you does or does not. Most people on this site hold themselves to the standard of bodybuilders and seek to take it to the next level. No reason to thing that this guy does or should.

i’ve added Cheetos to my diet on workout days because I want to be Ed Hochuli when I’m 55.

This link has a great picture of Ed Hochuli. A better picture to show off his size. May I look like this when I’m 55…

That pic is a little better, but it is always easier to look better clothed.

I still think he’s not as big as he used to be, becuase my perception of what is big has changed. I used to think his arms were massive (for an everyday guy), but now, as I get more serious into training, and as I grow myself, he just doesn’t seem as impressive.

Impressive as a referee – yes. Impressive as a lifter – I hope I look better when I’m 55.

We should turn the ol’ Ref unto T-Nation. Hook him up with Waterbury… He lives in Phoenix for crissakes.

I’m serious, Arizona T-Men, make it happen. Talk about a photo-op !!
Whaaaaa? Waterbury live in AZ. SHIT! I’ll pay him to train me. Do you have any info?

Prof

If it makes you feel better, I read this thread about 10 minutes ago and wanted to respond, but figured the thread was dead.

If you want the truth though Malonetd is just as moronic as you were. He ISN’T trying to be a weightlifter moron!
(to malonetd)

You make yourself look small and foolish qualifying your idiotic statememnt with “for an everyday guy.”

I predict you won’t look better at 55 because of your body image problems you have now. In fact, I bet he looks better now, at 55, than you look now.

Is that better X–I’m glad you opened the door for me.
