The Boxing Thread II

The old “Boxing Thread” died out with over 300 replies, and considering the meaty fight schedule coming our way I think we should reprise it.

This weekend we have two excellent fights:

Nov 4

“Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather vs Carlos Baldomir

This is for Baldy’s share of the welterweight title, and Carlos is going to have to pull off some Rocky shit to take out Floyd I think. Baldomir is tough, big, and puts the pressure on, but I see Mayweather slipping and countering his way to a wide UD here.

Sergei “The White Wolf” Lyakhovich vs Shannon Briggs

Out of the muddled mess that is the HW title picture, I think Sergei clearly has the most unrealized potential. Bitchko is clearly the front runner, his offense is devastating and with Steward in his corner he can probably avoid the problems that have plagued him in his career, at least until the HW messiah arrives. Wlad just has too many holes to be the “Muhammed Dempsey” that Larry Merchant always pines before in between bouts of senility. Maskaev is a shot fighter whose career just peaked against Rahman. Great heart, but he can’t go any higher. Valuev is a freak show. That’s a little harsh, but the guy just isn’t impressive beyond his towering physique. A tough fight for anyone, but I think that Wlad would rip him to shreds. He will be exposed for what he is sooner or later.

Sergei, though, is very well rounded. A little pudgy, but the guy is getting in better and better shape and has shown the most fluid and altogether there package out of any of the four IMO. He still has a lot of room to improve, and is showing the desire to do so. Briggs will come out gunning for the KO, Sergei will eat what he can dish out, and pick apart a gassed Briggs starting in 5, probably finishing him by ref stoppage in the later rounds. White Wolf, TKO, Round 9.

Even though I hate Mayweather, I don’t think he’s beatable right now.

After the beating he gave my man Gatti, I gotta say I’m amazed at Mayweather…fast as hell.

Mayweather is just disgusting to watch. His speed and defense are on another planet. Poor Gatti got tooled that night, but he kept coming and never backed down despite getting horrendously beaten down.

Hey cool!

Thanks for starting another boxing thread. Yeah, I think floyd by lopsided UD.

I’ve never seen Lyakhovich fight so it’s hard for me to make a prediction on that one. Based on what I know of Briggs, he’ll be dangerous for the first 3 or 4 rounds, but that’s about it.

I think Floyd will win, but Baldomir may pull off an upset-who knows??

great thread!

i looove boxing!

mayweather beats Baldomir, probably by late round KO. to fast, too slick, to much.

mayweather is pretty much unbeatable unless he finds the guts to get into the ring with Margarito, who will fucking kill him. mayweather, if i heard right, turned down 8 million to fight Margarito. inside word on some of the more obscure boards is pretty boy is scared shitless of him.

i am very interested in the Briggs Sergei fight. if Sergei is as good as the fighter who beat Brewster so bad, he should handle Briggs easily. just weather the inevitable early bombs, Wait until he gases, then take over and get a late round KO, like 8 or 9th.

but the guy who lost to Maurice Harris may show up.
\

like him or not, wlad is the front runner.

but has everyone (as far as heavyweights go) wrote off sultan? i still think he will be a force. as long as he comes in in shape. he came in pudgy and over-confident against the rain-man and managed only a draw after putting him down early in the fight. i think the will learn form this and come back strong, and gives anybody in the heavyweights a tough fight.

Brock/klitschko will be a must watch, i think wlad handles him, the big looping hooks that Brock has used to put more than a few opponents asleep will not work so well with a big heavyweight who has a real jab that is a real weapon. it is easy to come over the top of a lazy pawing jab and knock somebody out, but when it comes in like a jackhammer form a 6 foot 7 inch guy with reach, well, we will see.

gatti is at best a b-level fighter who got famous for a few tough fights where he showed a lot of heart. baldomir, who usually looks slow, plodding and far from a one punch knockout artist, looked quick and powerful against him.

mayweather is an incredible talent, has a sick work ethic and training schedule, but, he does not want to fight Margarito for some reason(lol). he says Margarito has only face “d” level fighters and is not worthy of a fight with him, but to turn down 8 million clams to fight a supposedly easy opponent? maybe he wants to keep both of his ears, i dunno…

I agree with your assessment of Gatti.

Also, I don’t think Baldomir can beat Mayweather, but that’s why they fight the fights, right?

Mayweather is much faster, quicker and his technique is awesome.

Baldomir appears to be slow, stubborn with a solid chin but poor technique.

We will see, though.

Sultan is pretty awesome, and I definetely haven’t written him off. Word is he wants, and just may get the winner of the Sergei/Briggs fight if Wlad doesn’t want a piece of the victor. He’s probably the most exciting up and comer.

Wlad, despite his hilariously traumatic losses to Corrie Sanders and Brewster is definetely the best out there. In the Peter fight he finally showed some heart and overcame some huge punches and bullshit knockdown/pushes and got the W, and won me over. He’s going to double that jackhammer jab up on Brock all night, and unleash that cross that almost blew Byrd out of the ring. Wlad’s cross, hardest punch out there right now? Unless Tua gets into decent shape and gets that left hook going again, I think so.

PBF in a lopsided UD.

I’d be very suprised if he stops Baldomir…but he will definitely pepper him all night. this is a large mismatch.

Baldy is a warrior no doubt…but he is flat footed and slow and doesn’t have good handspeed. Baldomir has had a great year…but in reality he is a C+ fighter at best.

floyd throws a shutout. then hopefully he will be able to fight the class of the division…cause in all honesty he hasn’t accomplished anything at 147.

yeah, wlad’s right can fucking crack i ell you… but thjing is , he can win a fight jsut off his left. a vicous punishing jab and he can hook off the jab, which when he wants it can be a knockout weapon.

that left hook is what nearly put Peter face first in the final round of that fight.

i heard you about the bullshit knockdowns in the Peter fight. he was hit in the back of the head and pushed down, TWICE. he got right back up, the third knockdown was for real though.

no matter how many times i watch that fight i cant believe they called the two in the 5th round knockdowns.

hey i hear you, they thought baldomir would be a tune up for judah no? lol

i cant stand pbf i tell you, i would LOVE to see baldy drop his ghetto gangster wannabe ass. but i dont think he(baldomir) has the tools.

now margarito, that is a different story.

LMFAO at “The Great Black Hope” and “Pineapple-Head”.

haha, that is good stuff. actually both Briggs and Sergei are polite and likable guys, they are being prodded by their promoters i am sure to generate some buzz about the fight. should be and exiting fight, but i just don’t see likanovich having too much trouble with the big and athletic but raw and too heavy Briggs.

Word is if Mayweather gets past Baldomir, he’ll face De La Hoya. The fight would take place at 154, and Oscar made a pretty good argument for that fight not being a mismatch at that weight.

Thoughts?

I tend to agree with Donut62’s assessment of how the PBF-Baldomir fight will go, but I’m thinking of putting some money on Baldomir anyway. You never know. PBF is at -539.

I look forward to both fights.

yeah, that is his most recent excuse not to fight margarito, that ihe is looking for the big payday against the golden boy. i thinbk it will be a good fight at 154, oscar (to me) is just a blown up lightweight, and his performance suffered each time he moved up in weight.

Well, Lyakhovich looked like a piece of shit, must be because I praised him so much. Apparently the Sergei that fought Brewster was a one time deal. Briggs stood there completely gassed with his hands down the whole fight, Sergei just looked at him and dropped his left hand as if so say “please counter me”. I was glad Briggs knocked out Sergei for the piece of crap that was that fight. Bad night for a troubled division. Bring on Wlad-Brock.

Mayweather did what I thought, he made Baldomir look amateurish and went backwards all night so it wasn’t very exciting. I sure as hell hope Wlad blows Brock out of the ring, these two fights put me to sleep!

agreed totally, baldoir was outclassed, we will see if mayweather has the stones to face margarito, or if he will go for the money and face ODLH.

Sergei looked like shit. the went in to press the action and got caught with a couple of counter lefts, and realized Briggs had the power to knock him out, so he never tried to mix it up. Briggs is too out of shape to press the action, so the two basically stood around and watched each other, until in the last few seconds of the fight Briggs used up what little gas he has and fired a few shots, caught Sergei and KTFO through the ropes.

ugly boring fight.

Look, I agree that Margarito is by far the biggest threat to Floyd at Welter and that a DLH fight is just about money. Hell, DLH hasn’t really been a relevant fighter in years. It’s the same reason that everyone still wanted to fight a clearly shot Tyson. His name brings both money and recognition.

That being said I don’t think for a second that Floyd is afraid of anybody, including Margarito. Floyd has immense talent and an even bigger ego. I don’t think he’s ducking anybody. Floyd is just doing what’s best for his career at this point and that means DLH. If given a choice I’m sure Margarito would rather fight DLH too.

The fight with Baldomir was what his 3rd at welterweight? His first two
were against Gatti and Judah who aren’t really true welter’s anyway. So
sure Mayweather took the path of least resistance in order to get a title in the division and give himself better bargaining power. What was he suppose to do, jump up in weight and fight the toughest guy in the division in his first fight? Remember Floyd was a lightweight not long ago.

If Floyd leaves the division without ever fighting Margarito that will
be a disgrace, but I don’t think Floyd?s afraid of him. I think it has
more to do with Margarito’s promoter Bob Arum, who used to promote and no longer gets along with Floyd. As far as turning down 8 million?maybe, maybe not. Promoters make big offers to fighters all the time, but they usually put in some kind of ridiculous catch so that afterwards, when the guy turns it down, they can run around saying that this guy is ducking my fighter.

Hopefully, Floyd and Antonio do eventually get it on, and when then do,
I expect something similar to when Mayweather fought Coralles.
