The old “Boxing Thread” died out with over 300 replies, and considering the meaty fight schedule coming our way I think we should reprise it.
This weekend we have two excellent fights:
Nov 4
“Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather vs Carlos Baldomir
This is for Baldy’s share of the welterweight title, and Carlos is going to have to pull off some Rocky shit to take out Floyd I think. Baldomir is tough, big, and puts the pressure on, but I see Mayweather slipping and countering his way to a wide UD here.
Sergei “The White Wolf” Lyakhovich vs Shannon Briggs
Out of the muddled mess that is the HW title picture, I think Sergei clearly has the most unrealized potential. Bitchko is clearly the front runner, his offense is devastating and with Steward in his corner he can probably avoid the problems that have plagued him in his career, at least until the HW messiah arrives. Wlad just has too many holes to be the “Muhammed Dempsey” that Larry Merchant always pines before in between bouts of senility. Maskaev is a shot fighter whose career just peaked against Rahman. Great heart, but he can’t go any higher. Valuev is a freak show. That’s a little harsh, but the guy just isn’t impressive beyond his towering physique. A tough fight for anyone, but I think that Wlad would rip him to shreds. He will be exposed for what he is sooner or later.
Sergei, though, is very well rounded. A little pudgy, but the guy is getting in better and better shape and has shown the most fluid and altogether there package out of any of the four IMO. He still has a lot of room to improve, and is showing the desire to do so. Briggs will come out gunning for the KO, Sergei will eat what he can dish out, and pick apart a gassed Briggs starting in 5, probably finishing him by ref stoppage in the later rounds. White Wolf, TKO, Round 9.
