The Best Back Exercise

I’m pretty sure CT mentioned in an article or comment awhile back that deads might not be a great back “mass builder” for some depending on how well the lifter actually recruited the lats in performing the lift … As evidence he pointed out the guy(s) most of us have seen pulling fairly big weights (compared to BW) with little or no muscle - back or elsewhere …

I think to a point this may be accurate … Not at elite levels - but I’ve seen some dudes pull 400 - 500 pound DL’s, and if you saw them on the street, the word “gym” wouldn’t have crossed your mind …

Obviously diet and other factors play into this scenario, but I think you can do DL’s and not really engage or stimulate your lats much (NOT saying you are doing them correctly in this fashion) … And no, a 400 - 500 DL isn’t earth shattering - but when you weigh a buck sixty soaking wet with rocks in your pockets and can get that up, you would expect some muscle to come with it …

Good discussion tho … [/quote]

I completely agree with that. I feel like deadlifts haven’t really done all that much for back thickness or width(but I wouldn’t call myself overly small - 188 @ 5’9"). Sure, I feel it in my back, but I dont think that it has done it size wise, a lot more on the strength level tho.
In fact, my cousin is a great example of this. He is 170ish and 6’3", yet he pulled 400.
With that being said, weighted/ unweighted pullups for higher reps have done a lot for me. I supplement my pullups with deads and one arm rows, but its the pullups that I have seen the greatest gains in size.

Truth be told, I would not expect a 400lb deadlift to yield very impressive physique results in general, even for a 170lb guy.

That being said, when I deadlift, it’s more a hip exercise than a back one. My traps get a decent workout, but not much in my lats.

Ya, thats what I was trying to say (did it sound like that?). My cousin just looks tall and slim - like he dont lift - so to pull 400 for him I was surprised.

What I’m saying is that it’s not surprising for him to pull 400lbs with that build, because it’s not a terribly heavy deadlift. One would need a heavier deadlift to expect physique improvement.

If they didn’t, they ought to have. Over and over and over again.

Conventional Deficit 4" DL >> snatch grip DL.

Just saying…

This thread is so retarded.
