The Balm.....

Any of you fellow old farts ever try using sports creme like tiger balm or the like on the crucial joints before working out to help warm up the joints ? I have been doing this for what seems like decades and I have never had a major joint injury or nagging pain in any of my critical joints. At 49, I think it works pretty damn well. I slather (I like that word)
it on my delts, elbows, knees before each and every workout. The hotter the balm the better. I was inspired to do this after I got an aching delt from heavy benching long, long ago. Have not had a problem since. Right now I’m using Cramer “red-hot” analgesic balm. A can lasts me a year or so.

Good preventative medicine for y’all who are complaining of sore joints.

I agree with you on the Tiger Balm. I haven’t tried the other one you mention but i will give it a try. I am 47 and got back into working out 8 months ago after being sick on and off for 11 yrs. It is a battle to lose the weight but I will not give up at any cost. Thanks for the advice.

I have a friend in his middle 50’s. He would fill his bathtup with hot water and climb in to warm up joints, tendons, muscles, everything… After he was all warmed up, he would ride his bike or run. His resting heart rate is about 40 beats per minute. I do not think he has lost a road race since he turned 50 and went into the older race age brackets.

I’ve used it on occasion, but not for joints but rather muscles. I started doing this for Army PT tests, as these were always first thing in the morning and warmup time was minimal. My muscles at least felt looser, but I never tested it scientifically (controlled studies on myself making notes on findings), so it would be nice to hear from some experts in the field on this one. Who knows, maybe even a Think-Tank issue???

I like to use Absorbine Jr. It doesn’t have quite the intensity of the others (or the smell) but you don’t have to get your hands all greasy when applying it.

Personally, I use Icy Hot rubbed in well before working out. The squat and bench I begin with a set of 12 with the empty bar. Then some light stretches, then another set of 10 with very light weight 135 and stretch again.
Deadlift I do some old fashioned knee bends, and toes touches then stretch. This stuff works the icy hot in better and my muscles and joints feel the better for it.
