I did a search, but did not really find enough information. Does anyone use liniments? Patricia and I recently joined the “Oregon Strongman Club”, and they say that liniment is a must. The brand they recommend is called “Capsician”.
thanks

I use Blue Heat. I tis a veterinary liniment I got off of Dave Tate’s site. It’s pretty much the same as Flex-All 454 it’s just in a bigger bottle so it’s cheaper. It won’t make you stronger but it will relieve stiffness and soreness a little.
i use this stuff thats called biofreeze.my chiropractor turned me on to it and its great for all sorts of joint and muscle aches.its available thru many places but i use this place:216.9.150.26/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=PP&Category_Code=GGW
Tried a linament for a while, but didn’t really feel anything in particular. So I don’t use any now.
We were told to apply the liniment before training or at least afterwards. Another liniment they mentioned was Bigeloil (which can be purchased at a feed store). I could see that Julie Havelka (Strongest Woman in the West 2002,
?1st place) was using a liniment (knees). I don’t know, even though strongman competitors are using this liniment, I’m still a little skeptical if it’s helpful. But I’m willing to give it a go…
I can’t contribute much to the liniment discussion, but I was wondering how it is you got in contact with those guys. I’ve briefly looked over their site, they look pretty cool!
What was I thinking. I almost forgot Ironmind sells pre/post-workout liniments. Go to the store and look under ‘Training Gear’.
Never used the stuff, but I’ve seen it referred to as “capsacian” as well.
I’ve been using a patch for sore spots after workouts. It’s called SalonPas Hot, and contains capsaicin (hot pepper oil). They come in large patches, about 6x4", and you can cut them in strips for placing around joints. They just peel and stick. I use them for my lower back frequently. I put one on before bed and the warming effect and blood flow work wonders while you sleep without the mess of ointments.
Blame it all on Chris Merrow! He trains at the same gym these guys train at. Oh, and have you checked out juliehavelka.com? She’s got Strongman info available on her site and she will be one of the people training at the club. Anyways, they’ve got a sweeeeet setup waaaaay back in the gym. It’s filled with truck tires, tire, stones (from 120 lbs to 300 lbs), logs, steel pipes - and anything else with varying widths for grip work.
Chris let us know about this hands on demonstration that was being organized for this past Friday. We thought "what the hell" and checked it out -and their plan was to organize a Strongman Club so that you could train in preparation for these events. For only $25 a month! Of course, we had to join!
I used to use horse linament, I think the brand was Absorbene (sp) it’s in a tall orange bottle with brown lettering. It stinks to high heaven, but it works great.
That’s damn cool, something I’ve always wanted to get into. I’m going to play around with some strongman/dino training this winter break, while I’m home. Pretty juiced about that. You’re going to have to let me know how this works out for you…
Hey Ko, what is the purpose of using linament? Can anyone use it or is it just mostly for powerlifters?? If I am having pains in my right elbow would this help the pain. I am in the process of actually getting it fixed, just wondring if this would help/speed up recovery??

Hey, bud! I just wanted to let you know that I realized earlier this week that I have never replied to your email! And I’m sooooo sorry. However, I will be able to finally send you a really looooong reply tomorrow night after training.
I am also rather mystified as to why the need of the liniments. I can't really remember exactly what Tod (Oregon Strongman Chapter Prez) said, but I do remember a "your knee joints will thank you".
They use it to keep the joints warm. Also supposedly keep you from getting sore, kinda like a heat pad. whether it works or not is beyond me.
Like many of you that have trained for a while, I’ve had some elbow and knee pain. During these times I have used Deep Relief, which worked wonders , and Tiger Balm, the hot version. I highly recommend these two products if you have pain. If you don’t then I don’t see the need. Liniments block the pain. I don’t see how long term use of these could be good for you. Blocking the pain without fixing the reason for the pain just makes it worse. I understand that strongmen (and women) beat the piss out of themselves. I appreciate that. However, some people that do these competitions are not so smart when it comes to long term training. Just my two cents.

I can say in the past that these have helped me out not only with some minor strains, but also just when my muscles “felt tight.” Sometimes even when my body has gotten really warm it’s still hard to get a muscle completely stretched out, and I know that these sports cremes help with that. They do a good job of increasing blood flow to the applied area.
So do you use them pre during or post workout??

It says here (in my packet…)…“works best if applied before a workout or right after showering…”
