i went on accutane(sp?), i had the dry skin on my hands really bad, i was pretty embarassed and when people saw my hands it always got questioned which didnt help, i had to use a chapstick for the first couple of months, the first day on it i was really fatigued…too be honest it wasnt that bad also no alcohol…i cut back massively while on the medication as it can apparently be trying on your kidneys, i still get occasional pimples, they dont bother me like they used too, but i cant understand the op not wanting to go back on it
- Lots of Water
- Good diet
- Oil free face wash
- Benezyol peroxide
- Moisturerizer
fish oil i take it but if i dont use BP and wash my face everyday i breakout… zinc is supposed to help too…
I’ll add one more thing (I was only half-kidding about the fish oil). My brother had really bad acne for all his teenage years. He lived in Houston. Went to college in Austin and a good bit of his acne cleared up on it’s own.
He thinks the pollution in the air might have led to a good bit of his acne problem. Not directly, but bad air messes up his lungs and it spills out onto his skin. Xenestrogen, like.
I had it pretty bad when I was 14-17, ended up taking Accutane. I didn’t really experience a lot of bad side effects, just had to use chap stick.
But since I was into cycling and racing, and training pretty hard, I could of sworn that it reduced my performance/ability to train. Almost as if it made my legs more sore.
Once I stopped the first cycle, it eventually came back and then I tried all these proactive and myriad systems, which didn’t do anything. It ended up clearing up eventually on its own. I’m so glad it’s completely gone now, only get the occasional pimple every so often.
Having it is prob one of the worst ways to go through your teens, its unfortunate so many people suffer with it. When I did have it, I never even thought of talking girls or anything.
i’ve had “unexplainable” problems for many years. what i mean by unexplainable are just on/off breakouts that seem random, whether they are or are not has been hard to determine even with my scientific eye.
But, i’ve have about best 2-3 months in a long time for not having breakouts since starting to take REZ-V 2-3 months ago. I am beginning to think the “hormonal imbalance” theory of acne where men have too much estrogen or women too much testosterone might be a large cause of the worldwide problem.
This is supported by the fact that women’s birth control (supraphysiological estrogen dosing) helps females with their acne problems. Of course this is only a very recent observation and future studies are needed. And I will be buying lots and lots more REZ-V. I think I am finally beyond the GI side effects it was causing initially. =)
Also i have been trying to cut out all high fructose corn syrup from my diet; it’s very, very hard as American foods (especially the cheaper ones) are ridden with it, but it can be done. If only I can say no to potato chips I will have won the war. But I think this may be helping a bit as well.
It’s hard for me to say though because I have been changing my lifestyle so much in the past few years.
Finally not being stressed is another obvious one that helps prevent breakouts. Although this is much, much easier said than done in today’s hellacious world…
I would also like to add that I stopped wet shaving years ago and now use an electric razor only. I find the Philishave coolskin range to be useful in avoiding cuts and giving soothing shave:
As some people have already said MILK should be avoided.
That was ans still is the main cause of my acne.I dont touch the stuff and im clear to this day.
So stay away from milk and u should be fine.
King of Kings
clear skin is an ancient secret everyone but you knows
Low dose accutane is what cleared me up.
10-20mg a day for 4 months after having presistent acne since I was 16 till 22, when I finally took the step.
I had a mild breakout after the first month, and then it cleared up and I now get no more spots than your average person, plus I didn’t have to deal with the usual side-effects that people experience.
It’s good shit.

Scott, I have had very bad acne from the age of 13-19 and it is almost gone now.
It cleared up considerably when I did the following;
Frequent swimming & getting fresh air & SUN - for the guy talking about excess radiation, what the fuck?
I stopped drinking milk, milk really really fucks up my skin even to this day. My skin could be perfectly clear, I drink a pint of milk and the next day I would have up to 6 white heads break up on my face, it’s horrible.
Sleeping habits also, I found if I stayed up later than 12am too often and woke up later than about 10am my acne worsened considerably.
I am also on a constant prescription of an anti-biotic (lymecycline 408mg, equivalent to tetracycline 308mg base) which has worked very well.
As for shaving, if I let any more hair grow out than I had to and hten shaved it would get quite bad, if I spent too much time shaving aswell it didn’t make things any better
So in summary:
-
Get a good prescription of anti-biotics, I recommened lymecycline wholeheartedly.
-
Swimming and plenty of sun
-
Stop drinking milk, possibly avoid other dairy products - just see how each type effects you, I personally don’t have a problem with cheese (in moderation)
-
Sleeping, try to get to bed before 12am and wake up before 10am.
-
Shaving, warm up your skin with hot water, apply a light layer of shaving cream, shave efficiently, quickly & lightly - pretend the spots are not there, and rinse off with cold water. Shave every other day, be consistant and do not let excess stubble grow out.
-
Drink lots of water.
EDIT - MISSED OUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING:
Stop using fucking face washes for the love of god!
The day I looked in the mirror and said ‘fuck you acne, I don’t care anymore’, stopped using my face wash and just went and did my own thing instead, it cleared up A TON.
You need to do what I said in the summary, but the most important thing is to stop caring about your acne, just wash your face as you would if you had perfectly clear skin (in the shower, perhaps in the morning when you wake up) but only wash it with water, fuck all that face wash shit.
Don’t moisturize either, don’t put any shit on your face that can clog up your pores - just water.

So you did a bunch of different things, including a perpetual course of antibiotics, but you attribute your current clear skin to all the things you did?
Yuor post shows the true value of the scientific method.

if im not doing all of the above i do not maintain clear skin.
I havent read the entire post, but I was very bothered with acne from 12 to 22. Thats ten years of my life i wont get back.
What works for you is hard to say, because its individual. For example do you have dry skin, or oily skin in your t-zone?
I have oily skin so I can just that. I avoid moisturizing creams of all sorts, i barely use soap. I wash my face with water once per day, but i gently use a facial peeling sponge with some gentle face soap 2-3 times a week - or when necessary. All that other shit is too much, for me at least. and i have tried everything, even mud from the soils of africa.
yeah
Sun worked very well for me, but not tanning beds. I must avoid sugars, too much carbs, potato chips and other products with that kind of fat. I must eat alot of vegetables. And drink plenty of water. for me eating sugar, bad fats and not drinking enough water still at the age of 26 gives me an outbreak.
so, go outside, drink water, eat good, and dont use all that soap and cremes they want you to use. unless if you have dry skin and acne, then i dont know since i dont have that.
best of luck
A long exposure to the sun will burn the epidermis, and the evened out skin might give you the false impression that acne has recessed when in fact, all you did is mask the problem. Might as well wear make-up!
The sun will make your skin age faster, and might worsen acne. UVs are not your friends. For the average person, I do not believe the good (stress relief or vitamin D activation) from exposure to the sun outweighs its downsides. And I don’t think dermatologists will generally disagree with that assertion.
All this talk about staying away from milk, I don’t know if I could replace milk in my diet.
