I have had been experiencing a sharp pain immediately when I squat, in particualr, during the first 1/4 of a full squat. The pain is in the upper side part of both thighs. I have been told that I have injured my tensor fascia lata. I have tried massages and foam rolling, but the pain has not decreased. I am a highly motivated squatter.
My squatting “age” is approximately 15 years. This pain has caused me to decrease my squatting poundages quite significantly. I only go up to 275 pounds. My last max was at 365, which was performed approximately 2.5 months ago. I have had this pain for about for about 9 months or so. Perhaps I could say that I train the squat in a powerlifting style i.e., my goals are primarily to increase squatting strength and less on hypertrophy.
Has anybody had an issue similar to this? If so, how have you corrected it?
Thank you Mr. Robertson.
Yes, the other lifts that cause pain are leg presses and leg extensions, but more so on leg presses and squats. To be honest, I am conscious of my body mechanics, but I don’t know exactly what my hip/pelvic position is like. I do not believe that I exaggerate my anterior pelvic tilt because my glutes are not sticking out a great deal.
I also have big glutes i.e., they stick out. They are perhaps my most developed body part. They are the muscle group that hypertrophies the fastest, and I presume the source of my leg strength and power. I also deadlift every back workout. I currently have a raw [no belt, straps, and chalk] 480 deadlift. I am scheduled for 500 tomorrow.
PVC pipe /hard roller for IT bands, TheraCane or hard-ass-ball for your TFL. My TFL used to spasm a lot, now it doesn’t ever since I did soft tissue work for it.
