Teammate's First MMA Fight

Just wanted to share my teammate(Carson Keys)first fight with you guys. Very proud of the way he handled his first fight. Definitely glad to be part of his training camp. He was a big underdog taking on more experienced(and “hometown”)fighter. Add in the fact that he’s only 19 yrs old and looks like your ordinary, goofy kid…haha. Anyways, enjoy…it’s not long

I suspect I will hear a lot about this guy in the future, sick submissions.

I’m very impressed. For his first fight he looked light, crisp, and technical. Thought I was going to see a head kick KO for a second there.

I’m very impressed on many levels.

The fight was entertaining as hell, lots of snap on his kicks, beautiful submission
and I thought the show of humility and respect by bowing to his downed opponent was awesome!

His opponent looked flustered.

Yeah…after the fight he told us that he’s never fought anyone that used kicks that well and it threw him off his timing.

I would tell your teammate not to throw kicks to the body in mma. its to easy for someone to catch it. He puts himself in a really bad spot against a better opponent. If he wants to kick go high or low but mid kicks are just way to risky in mma.

Besides that congrats to him. Its not easy to get into the cage and compete. Best of luck to him in his future fights.

WTF are you talking about?

Anyways Boss, congrats to your team mate! He’s got skills. Kicks were nice and crisp. Does he take any Judo?

Thanks for posting that was very entertaining. Good luck to him in his career.

No Judo…just BJJ/Wrestling. Ground game is actually his strongest asset. He’s really good off his back…which leads us to the issue about mid-level kicks.

I understand the concern, but some people can pull it off…some can’t. He will have to learn on his own if it’s in his best interest to keep doing so.

But as long as he picks his target wisely and uses good timing/technique…I personally think he will be fine. Who knows,he could be in a similar fashion to “Cowboy” Cerrone…good Muay Thai skills and very dangerous on their back if kicks result in being taken down.

Im talking about how its to easy to catch a body kick. His opponent didnt take advantage of it and could have caught it putting his friend in a bad spot. Im not saying they are the worst thing in the world but the risk to reward for them isnt worth it.

Like I said congrats to the win I am not trying to take it away from him at all. Just having a discussion about how mid kicks in MMA are not a great idea.

thats coming from a guy who i suppose never trained MMA, just ignore.

Thanks for the post… impressive to say the least.

^^^Said the fat guy.
See? It’s real easy to take jabs at some dude you don’t know on the interwebz.

He has a point regardless of his training background. I’ve caught body kicks from better MT guys before, resulting in a sweep to takedown.

BTW, OP, great vid. Tell your boy great job. That’s one hell of a coming out party.

Thanks,bg. I’ve talked to him a bit about body kicks. He actually thinks he will try and stay away from too many of them. Which is OK…but I told him it won’t be that big of a deal to mix them in with the low kicks…and more importantly…with punches.

I think body kicks are fine…IF you know what you are doing…i.e…going high/low…body/low…punches/low…etc. Too many guys just throw body and high kicks as clear as day without setting them up.

I don’t know dick-all about fighting, but your teammate looked really impressive there. I’ve seen many clips of first fights where the combatants are really sloppy, like kids in a schoolyard fight, but not here.

Agreed. I’m not an expert by any means, but a body kick here and there to mix things up probably won’t hurt. And if it does, he’ll surely learn from it and move on.

Again, great job.

Here is another one of our teammates from the same card winning the 170 lb amateur title.

Yes…he’s a monster. Didn’t he decide to go Pro??

Boss, your boy looked sharp. Really impressive for his first fight. I also liked that he knew the guy was out and “unlocked”. That ref needs to get a new gig.
