See? It’s real easy to take jabs at some dude you don’t know on the interwebz.
He has a point regardless of his training background. I’ve caught body kicks from better MT guys before, resulting in a sweep to takedown.
BTW, OP, great vid. Tell your boy great job. That’s one hell of a coming out party.[/quote]
Thanks,bg. I’ve talked to him a bit about body kicks. He actually thinks he will try and stay away from too many of them. Which is OK…but I told him it won’t be that big of a deal to mix them in with the low kicks…and more importantly…with punches.
I think body kicks are fine…IF you know what you are doing…i.e…going high/low…body/low…punches/low…etc. Too many guys just throw body and high kicks as clear as day without setting them up.

Agreed 100%
I asked about Judo cause he had a few opportunities to osoto gari from clinch and I think it would improve his game. He’s got great game, don’t get me wrong but its very important to mix things up in stand up and ground and not get predictable.

I would tell your teammate not to throw kicks to the body in mma. its to easy for someone to catch it. He puts himself in a really bad spot against a better opponent. If he wants to kick go high or low but mid kicks are just way to risky in mma.

uhhh…how is a head kick not more risky then a body kick? while there is a chance for a KO, unless you get that, your chances of the takedown are almost guarenteed (even more so than a body kick).
that being said, head and body kicks can be very usefull against a southpaw…

Just wanted to share my teammate(Carson Keys)first fight with you guys. Very proud of the way he handled his first fight. Definitely glad to be part of his training camp. He was a big underdog taking on more experienced(and “hometown”)fighter. Add in the fact that he’s only 19 yrs old and looks like your ordinary, goofy kid…haha. Anyways, enjoy…it’s not long

With a head kick most guys are putting there hands up or ducking. You are correct that it is risky if not done well but so isnt every other kick in general. For every unbelievable kick in MMA I have seen I have seen double that cost the guy the match. With body kicks your chances of getting grabbed are very high. There are guys that do it very well but not many.

I could see that…but for his first fight,we wanted to keep things simple and efficient. We didn’t want him rushing anything and we stress good clinch/body control being more important than going for somewhat high risk throws at this point.
Our other teammate had his first fight that night as well…and paid the price for rushing takedowns/throws before having good clinch/body control:
Sidenote: Just as proud for Robert and his first fight. It just didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to (obviously). He’s young kid with great upside as well…especially with his wrestling. He just rushed things a bit.
