Team Staley Fun Hour

I just got back from area 51, but I can’t talk about that. I CAN talk about your training problems however. So go ahead… I dare ya. Throw something at me…

Hey coach, long time no talk.
Did anyone ever win the snatch contest on the ISS forum? Wasnt it first to 205 got the dozen Krispy Kremes?

Coach Staley,

  1. If I’m incapable of performing cleans due to wrist & shoulder inflexibility, what would be a good replacement exercise?

  2. What stretches would you recommend to increase wrist and shoulder flexibility in regards to performing a clean?

  3. What is a a SHELC exercise that is mentioned in your “EDT Fat Loss Solution” article?

Thank you for your time!

Coach,

Wanted to thank you again for offering your insight Tuesday night into the forearm pain/numbness problem I’ve been experiencing. It’s a real bitch. It’s killing my ability to do pullups and I HATE not being able to do pullups. I think, however, that I may have incorrectly described the location. The pain radiates from my left elbow and travels along the outer or left side of my entire left forearm. Do you think this is nerve related? I value your opinion over my overweight/severely undertrained primary care physician. Thanks.

Hey Kal.

  1. Ideally, snatches of some sort…dumbbell, barbell, single-arm barbell, kettlebell, whatever your body can tolerate. OR Clean pulls from floor or hang.

  2. The best most direct stretch is doing the lift itself (and this goes for anything by the way), with whatever load you need to stimulate the stretch w/o hurting yourself. In addition to that, try holding a wood dowell in your right hand, where your right hand is above your right shoulder, pinkie facing down. Then grab the stick with your left hand, under your right arm pit. Looks like you’re holding nunchucks when you do this. From here, you can create a stretch by pulling the stick with your left hand in various directions. This is a bit hard to articulate in text form, but hopefully that made sense

  3. It’s a supine hip extension leg curl on a swiss ball.

Hi Coach, I’ve just finished watching your EDT DVD, and want to make sure I’ve got a couple of points regarding rep count/progression correct. Please let me know if I’ve got this down:

For each exercise in the same PR, I should execute the same number of reps on each “set” (ie. If I drop from 5 to 4 reps on my first exercise, I should do the same on the second exercise).

And, I should strive to complete the same total number of reps for each exercise during the full PR. Then, try to beat those two totals in my next workout. Thanks for your input.

I do think it’s nerve related, but see your fat doc anyway? he’s flabby cause he spends all his time studying problems like the one you have. So get a diagnosis and then get back to me…

Correct!

Again, correct! Hope you enjoyed the DVD!

I’m a 47 year old discus thrower looking for some training ideas. I’m a Virgo, if that helps. Do you have any training ideas?

Hey Coach,

Thanks for the great DVD on EDT! It rocked!

Had a thought I’d like you to critique:

What do you think of using different intensities for different workouts. e.g. WO 1 - 60% of 1RM, WO 2 - %80, WO 3 - %70, WO 4 - %90, repeat.

Thanks,
Rolo

Dan, I just did your chart and at the moment, your moon is in the third house of aquarious, so I’d advise aginst close grip benches until July 2nd, when Saturn is in better alingment with jupiter.

hey I can’t figure out the chat thing, call me if you can!

Ooops, should say that the intensities would still be used edt style, trying to beat the last PR zone with the same weitht, repeat for a time then retest 1 RMs.

Rolo.

I have no issue with that approach really. It all depends on goals, and all the other factors we use to determine optimal loading. Glad you enjoyed the DVD

Hey coach I tried CTs bigger bench program (and others) but the volume blew me away-other programs seems to do the same to me-my food and recovery is ok.

I just feel like my nervous system cant handle too much at the moment (lots of stress and very busy at work) I am going to try once a week benching to see if full recovery between workouts may help me

Bench cluster 3 sets of 5 at 90% ,85% 92% of 1RM
Eccentric bench @ 120 4-8 reps
Plus ext roation and rows etc

I?m worried that 7 days between bench sessions may not work- I have added 3 x 1 at 90% of my bench workout just to keep the exposure to the nervous system.
Any thoughts?
